Signs and Symptoms of Acne

Acne is the common term used for a skin disorder that frequently appears as small elevated pimples on the face, back, chest, and shoulders. About 80% of teens are affected by acne to some degree, and it sometimes even occurs in adults up to the age of 40 if not treated properly. The image on the right shows an individual suffering from a moderate amount of acne on the face.

There are two major types of acne:

  • Non-inflammatory Acne: This type of acne typically appears as whiteheads or blackheads, and they can be treated with non-prescription acne medications and acne home remedies.
  • Inflammatory Acne: Non-inflammatory acne, if not treated properly with effective acne medication, can lead to inflammation, which may cause more serious skin eruptions and pimples such as papules, pustules, nodules, and cysts (described below).

Acne can be divided into the following minor categories, based on appearance:

  • Acne Papules are a small, red form of acne pimples (less than 5mm) that are slightly elevated above the skin’s surface. A group of small acne papules gives a sandpaper-like feel if touched.
  • Acne Pustules are similar to acne papules but they are more dome-shaped and filled with pus.
  • Acne Nodules are a severe form of acne which are painful and inflammatory. They are seated deep in the layers of the skin and can take up to 2 months to heal. If not treated properly, this form of acne can also lead to permanent acne scars.
  • Acne Cysts are severely inflamed, sac-like nodules which can reach up to several centimeters in diameter. Acne cysts are sometimes referred to as nodulocystic acne, and people suffering from this type of severe acne should seek immediate medical care.

Causes of Acne

Acne is a skin disorder caused by plugged pores of the skin. Human skin has a middle layer called the dermis which is made up of hair follicles and sebaceous glands. These glands produce an oily substance called sebum that is used to naturally moisturize and lubricate the skin. The face, back, chest, and shoulders contain a large concentration of these glands.

Throughout life, and particularly during puberty, humans produce hormones such as androgen and progesterone that lead to an overproduction of sebum. As a result, this excess sebum plugs the follicle canals and skin pores, leading to blackheads and whiteheads.

Blackheads form when sebum combines with skin pigments and plugs the pores. Whiteheads are slightly elevated from the skin but, unlike blackheads, are not very visible because their opening to the skin’s surface is narrower or sometimes closed.

If these two forms of acne are not treated immediately, an infection may occur. If this happens, the body’s immune system sends white blood cells to the area to fight the infection, which causes inflammation. If the infection is still not treated, the inflammation can become worse and lead to the more serious forms of acne.

Home Remedies for Acne Treatment

Acne Home Remedy Using Apple Cider Vinegar

Apple Cider Vinegar is an effective natural agent that cures acne by killing the bacteria and balancing our skin’s pH level (which is a measure of acidity). It also absorbs excessive oil from our skin, which is a leading cause of acne.

  • Dilute the Apple Cider Vinegar in water by one part of vinegar and 4 parts of water.
  • Apply the solution directly to your skin with clean cotton, and leave it there for about ten minutes.
  • After ten minutes, rinse off the vinegar.
  • Repeat this three times a day. For severe cases of acne, the solution can be used overnight without rinsing.

For more severe acne, the water ratio can also be reduced to 2 or 3 parts per one part of vinegar, but this stronger solution should not be left on overnight.

Acne Home Remedy Using Tea Tree Oil

Tea Tree Oil is a great anti-bacterial natural substance. When applied on acne, tea tree oil helps the immune system to kill the bacteria and consequently reduce the inflammation. Using Tea Tree Oil in conjunction with Vitamin E supplements (an anti-oxidant) and an excellent healing agent, can not only heal the blemishes but also cure scar tissues.

  • Mix 2 drops of tea tree oil in ¼ cup of distilled water. Dip a cotton swab into the solution.
  • Gently apply the mix onto the acne-prone areas with the swab before going to bed.
  • Rinse off the tea tree oil solution in the morning.
  • Take Vitamin E supplements as directed on the package to support the healing process.

For acne and pimples, try Bajaj No Marks. I have tried it and using this product for last 5 months and it seems to be very effective.

Good stuff! I especially enjoyed the good information you talked about. I’m very happy to find this awesome blog. Anyway, I want to talk about the relation between acne and chocolate because I have suffered from Cystic acne for many years and thank God I have recovered from this disease. The main reason my condition worsened was chocolate, but when I stopped eating it in addition to taking the medication, acne quickly faded away naturally.
I want to make sure that everyone knows that chocolate was a major cause of acne for me.

Love these tips. I use zit clay & tea tree oil, too (recommended by my aesthetician).

Caty Jo, try adding 2 drops of Tea Tree oil in your face-wash every time you wash your face. Also using witch hazel as a toner afterwards helps with acne and its astringent activity helps with oily skin. I have been using both for a few tears and am acne-free since.

I have extremely sensitive skin on my face. I can’t find anything to clean my face without breaking out. Even cleansers for sensitive skin break me out. My skin is so oily. I am 1/2 Italian. Any suggestions?

@Roshni, Try applying diluted Apple Cider Vinegar or diluted Tea Tree Oil onto the affected skin. Both the ACV and Tea Tree Oil have shown to help with acne. Please read the remedies in detail above on this page. Hope it helps!

I have started getting pimples 10 days before the onset of my menstruation period every month. They hurt a lot and leave marks when they heal. My skin is a bit dry and sensitive. I’ve tried Multani Mitti/Clay – it helped a bit but new pimple showed up the next month. I hate how much these pimples hurt. Please advise if I should try some other home made remedy?

Does it work? Anybody else tried charcoal?

  9. I would take some activated charcoal at bedtime with plenty of water for a couple weeks and see if it’s the gut, or bad bacteria overgrowth? Eat kefir in the morning. Start with low dose and work up to a cup a day. Apply activated charcoal with castor oil (make a thin paste) on skin and let it sit for an hour , I know it’s messy. It gets in the pores so you have to scrub it off. Put some kefir on skin when you are done or some red wine. Take some L-taurine to see if msg in body is behind the acne. Blessings, Kay

Try calamine lotion for acne. It doesn’t sting like tea tree oil or vinegars or perfume. Put it on before bed on affected areas, you will be surprised with the results.

  11. For acne wash with Black soap, and use dead sea soap. And Vitamin A, and Borage oil works well too.

Apple Cider Vinegar is quite useful for skin problems especially related to acne or acne marks. One of the natural treatment I suggest is making a Nutmeg paste. Make a Nutmeg paste by rubbing it on a rough surface of a clean stone using milk which would form a smooth paste and then add some turmeric to the paste. Apply this nutmeg and turmeric paste into your face and gently massage for 20 minutes. This is one of the effective remedies for acne related problems.

  15. Believe it or not, for Acne, try a pea sized amount of toothpaste. Lather in palms with a little water. Then apply it to face and leave on for about three minutes. Then rinse with water. Do not use soap (this should be done at two to three times per day). It helps clear Acne.

Hello, I’m looking for some advise on how to get rid of acne nodules. I read above that those are the type that are seeded deeply under layers of skin. I’m going to try the tree tea oil. Honestly, I am not holding out much hope, this might elevate the problem. I’m 38 years old and have tried all sorts of treatments both perscribed and over the counter. This just started within the last 8-12 months, I’m totally perplexed. I have never had this form of acne. Please advise. Thank you.

For Acne, use tea tree oil. Simply wash your face with warm water pat dry it and then take a cotton ball, put a few drops of tea tree oil on it and apply on the affected skin. Trust me it works. Use it as needed. I myself use tee tree oil on my skin two to three times a day. It does wonders for the skin. Use pure Tea Tree Oil ONLY .

Thanks so much for posting all these acne remedies. I’ve had moderate acne on my chin and cheeks for the past few years. Instead of always going to the doctor, I wanted to try out some home remedies to see if I can resolve this issue naturally.

The best remedy I came across was the following: Before going to bed, boil some water, lemon balm (Melissa officinalis), soapwort (Saponaria Officinalis), and black elder (Sambucus nigra) together in equal portions. Then soak the bottom part of a cotton towel in the herbal mixture, and wrap the towel around your head so that the wet part covers your cheeks and chin. Leave this on for around 1 hour (which is easy to do if you’re watching TV).

I hope this remedy helps others too!

  26. Renee

Just mix a little bit of Tea Tree oil with your moisturiser. Works wonders for me 🙂

  27. For real though

I am 28 year old female and still used to get weekly acne. I do get deep cystic acne every once in a while. I started a new regiment 4 weeks (Listed Below) ago and by the looks of it I finally have clear skin with no signs of new pimples or cysts emerging:

Took me years to find the right products for me – I have very sensitive skin

    My Skin Regiment:
    Cetaphil Gentle Skin Cleanser (AM/PM)
    Citrus Clear Sensitive Moisturizer
    Citrus Clear Grapefruit Spot Treatment
Fish Oil – pills (AM only)

Other Things to Consider when trying to achieve great skin – Probably the most important too
    64 – 128 oz of Water Daily
    6 – 8 Hrs of Sleep a Night
1 Hr of Exercise per day (5 per/week)

I have oily skin and I’ll get pimples very easily. I tried white toothpastes, honey and cinnamon mask, baking soda masks and doctor’s prescribed cream also but nothing worked. Can you suggest me something that cures pimples and their marks easily because when pimples are cured they leave marks on my face.

@Rachel: Did you try ice? There are a lot of methods to get rid of acne you can try: tea tree oil, garlic, ice, lemon. But to quickly get rid of acne fast, you should consult a doctor.

  33. @Rachel- I used to get so much acne but thanks to Tea tree oil, it has cleared out. Simply mix about 10 drops of organic 100% tea tree oil into a cup of filtered water and apply this solution with a cotton swab onto the troubled skin twice daily. Make sure to shake it well before application. Don’t forget to apply it before going to bed. If it doesn’t make any difference within a week – add 5 more drops into the solution. I hope it helps

  34. @M.Sharmila- for dark skin around the lips, try applying organic coconut oil and lemon juice separately during different hours. Coconut oil softens the skin and lemon juice clears the dark spots. I hope it helps!

  35. Rachel

My face breaks out everywhere all the time. I can’t seem to get rid of it even with going to.the dermatologist. please, help!

Any kind of chemical burn due to tea tree oil or toothpaste can be fully treated with the use of coconut oil. It really works. I have damaged my face couple of times and coconut oil works wonders. My skin goes back to normal in 3-5 day. Just make sure you use all natural coconut oil.

  39. Jessica P

My daughter is already having problems with acne and our dermatologist recommended Citrus Clear – so I tried this and it worked immediately. She is washing her face and using it daily and is a much kinder and gentler than other acne products. She loves it !

  40. Melissa White

Your home remedies for acne here are very helpful and very effective. It helps my day very beautiful like my skin in my face, thanks!

  41. Vicky

Honey mixed with sea salt or sugar, is a great scrub to clear up acne. It kills the bacteria that causes acne and gives off a nice healthy glow. Hope it helps.

  42. My gf’s son uses oil of oregano. ten drops in a half ounce of olive oil. Keep in a small container with sealable top. apply daily…..he has seen an amazing improvement

  43. I’ve heard from many people that Accutane works wonders. The side effects (sensitivity to sunlight, burning feeling) may put you off, but it really works wonders. Ask your dermatologist about it, in fact, go see a dermatologist if none of the above natural remedies are working. After your skin is cleared from whatever Rx is chosen, the above methods can help maintain your appearance.

  44. All the methods suggested above depends on individual skin type , it might work for u or not work at all, but hey don’t get me wrong It worth trying. I tried everything nothing seems to work. Depressed with how my skin look. Ho one day I will find solution.

I suffered from acne starting from puberty. Used all kinds of otc medications and stuff. It finally cleared up when I was over 25. Not sure exactly what it was. Maybe just out-grew it. But I think it was because I stopped using all the harsh otc meds. All those things that dry out your skin will make things worse. If you have acne, moisturize – a lot. If the meds are drying out your skin, the more your skin will produce oil. MOISTURIZE. Also exfoliate with baking soda and water. I also think taking probiotics help. Didn’t try the probiotics until later, but when I did my skin was glowing. Good luck.

In my experience its the oils on the skin clogging up the pores, along with dirt and whatever else lands on your face in a day. I have found a cheap and easy and effective way to reduce this problem. Every morning and night before you go to bed, wipe your face(especially acne prone areas)with a cottonball soaked in rubbing alcohol. This kills any germs that maybe on your face, takes off all the oil on your face, and dries any acne that is allready there or thinking about showing up. 🙂 Good luck, inbetween morning and night, I would wash your face a couple times a day with just water and a facecloth to keep your skin clean.

  47. I ended up trying essential oils to try and fix my acne; it is no miracle cure but there again I doubt anything can just get rid of acne for good! Check out this page essentialoilsforhealth.biz for a few tips that might help you out.

  48. I agree with all the points you have mentioned. I also write about Professional Ways To Treat Acne Nodules on my site. It may help you.

    http://www.howtogetridpimplefast.com/treatment-for-acne-nodules/

  49. Few tips 1. Don’t touch your face as much. 2. Sleep with your bangs of your face. 3. Wash your pillow case more often. Wash your makeup brushes frequently.

As for me, I use to have breakouts and I’d try washes that were designed to stop acne and they would leave my face in worse condition than before I used it. It would get rid of the oil but make my face so dry it was raw. So I switched to using an oil cleaning method (they sell cleansers like that at ulta I know for sure) and it made all the difference. My acne cleared up so fast. My face had been over producing oil because of the strong washes I was using and that was causing my breakout. Hope this helps.

Acne Nodules & Cysts suffers, you must look into the “oil cleansing method” and oil of oregano. These have help me out tremendously. You will be amazed.
