Signs and Symptoms of Urinary Tract Infection

Urinary Tract Infections (UTI) are characterized by a strong and sudden urge to urinate, followed by a slow and painful release of very little urine. UTI is also often accompanied by soreness in the lower abdomen, back, or sides. While both men and women are susceptible to UTI, women suffer from it more often, with half of all women experiencing it at least once in their life.

While the home remedies described below can be effective in many situations, you should consult with your doctor if a urinary tract infection is accompanied by one or more of the following symptoms:

  • Blood in the urine.
  • Nausea or vomiting.
  • Fever.

These symptoms are usually a sign of a more serious infection that may need to be treated with antibiotics.

Causes of Urinary Tract Infection

Urinary Tract Infections typically occur when the bladder and its exit tubes get infected due to bacteria. The most common types of bacteria that lead to UTI are those that live on the skin near the rectum, which can easily enter the urinary tract through the urethra.

Another common cause of urinary tract infections is sexual intercourse, since bacteria in the vaginal area can sometimes be massaged into the urethra by the movement of the penis. In rare cases, some women can get UTI each time they have sex.

Waiting too long to urinate is also a common cause of bladder and urinary tract infections, since the bladder can stretch beyond its capacity which weakens the bladder muscle. If this occurs often, the weakend bladder will begin to have difficulty emptying itself, which results in urine being left in the bladder that can lead to infections.

Finally, other factors such as pregnancy, menopause, and diabetes can also increase the risk of developing UTI.

Home Remedies and Natural Treatments for UTI

Drinking Water

One of the best home remedies for urinary tract infections is to simply drink lots of water. By drinking lots of fluids, you will force yourself to urinate more often, which will help your body flush out the bacteria that is causing the infection. A recommendation is to drink 6-8 large glasses of water per day.

Vitamin C

Increasing your daily Vitamin C intake can help increase the acidity of your urine, which can help prevent bacterial growth. Therefore, if you suffer from frequent UTIs, taking 1000mg of Vitamin C per day has been shown to be quite effective at preventing recurring infections.

NOTE: If you are taking antibiotics for a bladder infection, you should consult your doctor before increasing your Vitamin C intake since some don’t work well with highly acidic urine.

Cranberry Juice

Cranberry juice contains high concentrations of Vitamin C and Quinolic Acid, both of which are known to help treat UTI since they help prevent bacteria from anchoring onto bladder walls. Therefore, if you have UTI, drinking 12 to 24 oz of cranberry juice can be very effective. As a preventive measure against urinary tract infections, drinking at least 3 oz per day works quite well.

Echinacea

Echinacea is an herb that contains a number of substances which help fight infections including UTI. You can either drink an Echinacea tea once per day after lunch or dinner, or consume high-quality 300mg Echinacea capsules or tablets once per day. Echinacea capsules can be found in many health stores.

I had several UTIs since I was young into my 20’s. My bladder wasn’t emptying fully all the time. The doctor tried stretching my urethra, but it was very painful. I finally had the surgery to enlarge my urethra and problem solved. I’m in my 60’s now and rarely do I have a UTI. Please ask your doctor if you are suffering from too many UTIs.

  3. I have infection that gets better when I take antibiotics. And after two weeks of treatment, it comes back again. Please help.

There is a magical homeopathic remedy called “Cantharis Vesicatoria”. It is good for all UTI related issues. Look for the ones with potency: 200ck or 200c or 200X. It is available in variant potency but take 200 to begin with. Take 5 pellets twice a day for day 1. Then wait for two to three days to 1 week or more. If you feel lesser symptoms of UTI, do not repeat the medication further. If the symptoms come back, then use it again and use it only once a week or so. Over time the symptoms will go away. Google the name of the remedy for further information. Hope this helps. God bless.

Veronica, Try drinking 8-10 cups of water daily. Sometimes dehydration causes the burning sensation after urination. Also try drinking 2-3 cups of organic cranberry juice, NOT the one with added sugar. It helps with UTI or infection of the bladder. Drinking Barley water helps too.

My toddler who’s 5, started having symptoms of an UTI infection about a week ago. Ever since she has been drinking lots of water as well as cranberry juice but it doesn’t seem to be working. Do I use D-Mannose for prevention or treatment? And can one buy it from any pharmacy?

I have been prone to Urinary Tract Infections my whole life. I’ve probably tried every home remedy that I could find out on the market today! DO NOT drink Cranberry Cocktail, there’s a lot of sugar in it and it will just aggravate your condition further. Cranberry Juice has a dry taste for me, so I haven’t always been a huge fan of it. The Lady Soma cranberry Concentrate is a great alternative – I take it in the morning when I take my regular vitamins. I have made it part of my regular routine so that my body is prepared if another Urinary Tract Infection is lurking in the shadows. These pills are small and easy to swallow as well as doesn’t have any taste. Good Luck!

Shawn, it seems like you may have UTI. Take Vitamin C and drink lots of water. Also, drinking 2-3 glasses of cranberry juice throughout the day always helps me. I put 3 glasses of cranberry juice in a jug and fill the rest of the jug with water and finish it by the end of my workday. If you don’t feel better in a couple of days, you should go see a doctor. Hope it helps!

I have pressure after I urinate and it lasts for a while. Also I have to urinate again and again. Its very uncomfortable. What can I do? Thank you!

@Faith: That would entirely depend on the severity of the UTI. Sometimes you need the antibiotics right away, and cannot wait for the urine sample results to come back. Just yesterday, I was prescribed antibiotics immediately without first submitting a urine sample because my doctor and I agreed there was no time to wait, considering how severe my UTI was (tons of blood in the urine and agonizing pain). So your advice would really only apply to very mild cases of UTI.

My problem is that I get burning feeling in urethra after ruination.

Regardless of gender male or female try barley water. I buy pearl barley – all supermarkets sell it. 1 mug of barley, 5 mugs of water – bring to boil and allow to simmer 30 mins. Then strain off liquor, juice from half a lemon and can also add a spoonful of honey. I drink 2 glasses of it everyday.
No more urinary tract infection problems for the last 6 weeks. I’m making it part of my daily routine.

I have itchiness at the urine exit area. This starts around the 7th day from the menses date. I have a painful ruination and very little amount of urine comes. Can you please suggest a home remedy.

  16. I am suffering from frequent urinating. I did urinalysis and its normal. No bacteria is found but my doctor told me that I have a few crystals in my urine. The doctor prescribed ALKA-UR and Cystone medicine. I’m drinking alot of water, coconut juice and cranberry juice but still have to urinate frequently. What should I do?

  17. Make sure you don’t have bladder stones. This was the reason my UTIs didn’t go away.

  18. Ladies if you haven’t tried D-Mannose yet, you have to! It is a natural sugar that helps get rid of E.coli by clinging to it and making the bacteria unable to attach to your bladder walls. It is completely natural and safe and won’t kill the good bacteria in your digestive tract like antibiotics do. It has been a life saver for me as I get really bad side effects with most antibiotics. You do have to drink lots of water to flush out the bacteria. I’ve gotten relief after 24 hours of starting a D-mannose regimen. I take the capsules 1000 mg 5 times per day at the onset of symptoms. They do have it available in powder to mix with water and it is supposed to be slightly more effective. Good luck to all of you.

  19. UTI is very bad – try eating less acidic foods. Acid always hurts joints and urethra. It damages the bones and causes inflammation. Eating squash without spice and red chili pepper everyday can be beneficial for Urinary Tract Infection. Also incorporating Cucumber, Cactus, and Celery into your diet helps.

My disabled daughter has to be cathed every 4 hours, she takes a daily dose of antibiotics to keep Urinary Tract Infection (UTI) away. She began having repeated UTIs We were sent to an infectious disease doctor and were told to give her Vitamin C twice daily. She hasn’t had a UTI in 4 months.

I suggest that go for a urine culture test first before taking doctor’s prescription for antibiotics for urinary tract infection. Along with the results it will be a list of antibiotics that are effective for you and the ones that are not. Sometimes when we take antibiotics for quite some time, they become ineffective. You can request your doctor that you would like to have a urine culture test first. The test results usually take less than a week. This way you can take the antibiotics which will actually be right for you.

You can also drink 1-3 cups of cranberry juice that also can help relieve the pain a little.

@ KA – Urinary tract infection is usually caused by the infection in the bladder and/or urethra. Sometimes, the bacteria in the rectum area enters the urethra when we clean from back to front, or it can enter during sex. And bladder infection can occur when we don’t take our time to empty the bladder completely or our bladder muscles get weak if we have a habit of holding urine for too long and muscles don’t contract enough to empty the bladder fully or we don’t drink enough water and urine stays in the bladder for too long. Therefore, if you are prone to UTI’s, making a habit of cleaning the rectum from front to back and try washing the rectum area after defecating and before sex with a peri bottle or a planter jug with a long spout can help minimize the recurrence of Urinary Tract Infections. Also drinking plenty of water and cranberry juice helps too!

  24. Hi. I need to know what exactly this is: My UTI keeps returning and I always end up going to the doctor who prescribes me a urinary alkaliniser and antibiotics. This time, I don’t want to go to the doctor. However, my UTI has been with me since over a month now and the pain goes away when I’m drinking lots of water, but it returns even if I don’t drink enough water for a day. Can someone please suggest something? Or tell me why it comes back and goes?

  25. I use d-mannose 500mg every 4 hours for three or four days to help with a urinary tract infection. Be careful though because it can cause diarrhea. I also take a shallow bath with two tbs of apple cidar vinegar on day three. Don’t linger too long in tub, just long enough to stop the itching and burning. I do this because I wound up in the hospital once from the antibiotics I was prescribed (turns out I’m allergic to the ones that treat UTI). I hope this helps you.

  26. I get a burning sensation whenever I go to the bathroom – what can help?

  27. I need help with home remedies -any suggestions?

Don’t use veet cream on your private part because that part is very sensitive. Use a mild anti-bacterial soap to clean that area.

  29. I urinate every 5 minutes and have itching in my vagina all the time. And I get boils frequently in vaginal area as I am unable to remove the hair properly because I am pregnant and unable to see it. Whenever I use Veet cream, it causes irritation and redness.
Please suggest me some home remedies

A very good way to cure, not only the UTI but also other bacteria and virus problems is to take colloidal silver water that cures a lot of diseases. After 15-20 min of ingestion, you will feel better. But continue taking it, it protects you from further infections. You can use it everywhere in and on your body (even eyes with no problems). I cured myself from a lot of health problems in just a few days of taking it. Wish you good health!
