Signs and Symptoms of Kidney Stones
A kidney stone is a small, grainy deposit that develops in the kidney due to a buildup of calcium crystals and other minerals in urine. These stones can range from about the size of a grain of sand up to the size of a pencil eraser. Eventually, this stone has to pass through the ureter, which is a small passage that is primarily meant to carry liquid. This results in the most common symptom of kidney stones: sudden and intense pain. Other symptoms may include:- Wave-like pain, usually in the side of the mid-back, which radiates to the groin area and cannot be prevented by adjusting your position or sitting still.
- Small amounts of blood in the urine.
- Sweating, nausea, or vomiting.
Causes of Kidney Stones
Calcium and other minerals in the body are normally flushed away during urination. Kidney stones develop when the concentration of these minerals in your urine is too high, resulting in a buildup of these crystals that form into a hard deposit. Diet plays a significant role in determining what kinds of minerals accumulate in your urine.
Home Remedies and Natural Cures for Kidney Stones Treatment
Drinking Water to Prevent Kidney Stones
Drinking more water helps to increase the volume of urine.
This in turn helps to decrease the amount of stone-forming elements that build-up.
Therefore, a common recommendation to help a kidney stone pass through the body more quickly
is to consume close to a gallon (almost 4 liters) of water throughout the day.
If you've previously had a kidney stone, drinking more water is also a good way to prevent the
recurrence of them.
Magnesium as a Natural Treatment for Kidney Stones
Foods that are rich in magnesium have been found to help prevent the development of kidney stones,
since magnesium helps lower the amount of oxalate minerals in urine (oxalate is one of the main components of kidney stones).
Good sources of magnesium are fish, rice, avocado, and broccoli.
You can also help prevent stones from developing by reducing your intake of oxalate-rich foods such as chocolate, nuts, beans, spinach, grapes, strawberries, blueberries, and black tea.
Reducing Salt Intake to Prevent Kidney Stones
Eating foods that are high in salt and sodium have been found to increase the amount of calcium in urine, which increases the chances of developing a kidney stone.
Therefore, a good guideline is to reduce daily salt intake to 2-3 grams. It is best to avoid high salt foods such as ketchup, mustard, luncheon meats, and snack foods such as chips and pretzels.

Aaron, you seem to have a background that would seem to lend you the best opportunity to consult with the medical community yourself. That said, while asparagus does have oxalic acid it's predominate medicinal property is asparagine - nature's most effective kidney diruetic. While coke's property that lend's itself to correcting kidney stones is that of phosphoric acid - which as everyone knows, will desolve iron. Coke disolves the stone and asparagus flushes it out of our system. It's not like your given a prescription to do this 3 times daily. It's a one shot deal..... and it worked for me.

This seems very contradictory to what I learned about kidney stones in nursing school. Calcium stones are the most common type of stones people get, and foods high in oxalate are supposed to be avoided with these types of stones. Asparagus and sodas are among the top of the list of oxalate-rich foods. But I've read a lot of positive reports about this treatment, can someone with some medical background explain physiologically how this is supposed to work?

Stef: Yep, drinking cola beverages on a daily basis isn't good - it will leach calcium... BUT WHEN YOU HAVE A KIDNEY STONE BLASTING CALCIUM IS WHAT YOU WANT !!! You can always follow up with yogurt. Lisa

I also suffer from kidney stones and I have noticed that taking Chanca Piedra has truly helped my pain, its from a health store and its only per bottle. i take three tabs per day and my pain is eased and i feel better. I have incresed my water intake. Whomever is suggesting to drink COKE is a remedy is ridiculous! Coke had acid in it which leaches the calcium from your bones out into your blood stream and causes KIDNEY STONES!!! So DO NOT try that! I was drinking diet coke everyday thats when I had the pain, I switched to No COLA, just water, light juices, and caffeine free drinks...try it...it may help!

I am a 33 year old male and passed my first kidney stone at the age of 8 in October 1986. Then each year around October and September I would always pass a kidney stone for the next 4-5 years. Then it started to happen every 3-4 months until about 10 years ago when I started at some times passing 8-12 a month and as a preventive measure a doctor put me on MS Contin so I was prepared ahead of the time for a stone to pass and then Percocet or Vicodin for break threw pain as the majority of the pain could be controlled by the morphine but the ripping up the inside of the kidney as the stone moved needed something more. At first I thought this was great because I was able to live a semi normal life working and being a father but after 6 years together the female I was with whom was soon to be my wife went on what was supposed to be a vacation from Phoenix where I live still to Sacramento and it ended up being a lie and she kidnapped out son and left mostly because she couldn't handle my medical issues and I don't blame her because I can hardly handle them myself and the past few years I have been at the edge of my breaking point where I don't feel like this is the way anyone should live both the narcotics and the constant kidney stones. At first 10 years ago I was taking the morphine at 30mg 2 times a day but now 10 years latter it's 200mg 2 times a day plus I get 180 30mg oxycodones and a few months ago that started to not be enough because my tolerance grows constantly. I see a really great pain management doctor and as long as I am open and honest with him he makes sure to take care of me and make sure I have the right dosages to take care of any stone but 2 months ago I was getting ready to lay down and watch T.V. and go to bed and suddenly had the worst pain ever from a stone in my left kidney where I usually do not produce stones as 85% have been from my right side. It was so bad and the only thing I could think was to try and get myself stable enough to go to the hospital without it being an even worse situation than it was. Unfortunately even after taking 4 Phenergan pills where normally 1 works without issues I was unable to keep down any pain medications. I had no way to get to the hospital as I do not drive nor have a car because of my medical issues and the frequency of my stones. Normally I can lay in bed as still and stiff as a board for the 6-8 hours a stone will take to pass threw my kidney but this one was the first that wasn't going to work that way. I ended up blacking out from the pain and attempts to get stable with my pain medications and woke up 8 hours latter still in pain and it was even worse , I couldn't even take a full breath without something inside me pressing my left kidney and it lasted for 2 days. I thought that was the longest I had even had to suffer threw for a stone to get threw my kidney when the pain stopped and thought it had exited and was in my bladder and for the next 2 days I felt no pain and then it was back and right in my kidney and it seemed it had just moved from one spot and got set in another for that time and luckily this time I was prepared and was able to get stable quickly but this kept going on for the next 6 weeks. Last week I finally passed it from the kidney into my bladder and this morning I was drinking lots of fluids in hopes to push it out my bladder but thought I had been feeling it blocking the hole a few times and after laying on my back for a few hours it had moved. Last night it entered the exit of the bladder not all the way maybe a corner or just a small piece of it but for some reason as soon as it got stuck there and I was unable to pee my kidney was in just as much pain from the start of this stone. I have never had surgery or lipotripsy and only one time back when I was 10 they tried Uteroscopic removal but failed and I have always passed my stones naturally and I have no medical and pay for doctors visits and prescriptions out of pocket and when I go to any hospital even if I have passed many stones there before the doctor instantly tells me I am full of it and am to young to be passing kidney stones and laughs when I tell him when they started and by the time I am leaving they are running to apologize and trying to avoid a law suite for their initial neglect.
So now that you have read my history , both sides of my family mom and dad have kidney stones along with aunts and uncles and on my dad's side it was supposed to skip a generation so my kid's would get them but not me but since my mom's side also has chronic kidney stone issues I ended up getting the worst of it. I have been told by a few doctors after metabolic workups and other tests that my stones are the first case they have ever heard of that are caused by stress as I live a stressed out life and your body does not process things correctly under stress. Recently after some tests we discovered a tiny tumor on one of my parathyroid glands and they are suspecting that to be the cause. I really need to know what is the best method from reading threw these postings and seeing other sites where it states spinach and some juice ( have to pay for both names but I figured out spinach ) will actually break down the stone in your kidney and I really need to know ASAP because my next option with this stone as I know I cannot pass it on my own is to go to the emergency room and get it removed and even though the local hospital has a lipsotripsy machine I wont get that option without insurance so it will either be the scope grabber up the urethra or cutting me open from my side and taking it out like my dad's have mostly been done and that is also something I wanted to avoid because my dad has scars that go completely around his mid area with staple hole scars where they didn't use stitches like serving in Vietnam. I don't want to have surgery , hell I don't want to go threw this any more as time goes on life is wearing me down to where I don't understand it's point and feel this is no way to live. SO PLEASE if you can tell me definitively what the juice is to drink with spinach I need to know and you may be saving a life. My stones are Calcium Phosphate. Thank you in advance for any help , I desperately need it. - James

I have suffered from kidney stones for years and have had 6 lithotripsy's and a surgery for hypoparathryroidism which is basically abnormal parathyroid glands pulling too much calcium out of my bones and into my bloodstream, forming calcium kidney stones. Besides kidney stones, it also gave me osteoporosis. It may help to have your calcium levels checked if multiple stones are formed. I still have some stones left after my parathyroid surgery and recently passed a large 6 mm stone within 24 hours of drinking a concoction of 4 oz. fresh lemon juice and 4 oz. virgin olive oil. I took the mixture in the evening and in the morning and passed the stone the following evening. I'm not saying this will work for everyone, but it seemed to help me with a large stone.

Dana, I did use a strainer I made out of pantyhose. It could be the stones were effectively broken down and smoothed so that they were passed without recognition. When I caught mine in the strainer I didn't even feel them; in part due to the amount and force of liquid I was passing. I did not go to the bathroom during the process until I had all 6 cokes, the asparagus and about half a gallon of distilled water.

After doing the Coke, Asparagus and Water remedy how long until you can eat some normal food? I found drinking the 6 cans of coke pretty hard ... the first 2 were pretty easy but the next 4 were hard (and coke is my drink of choice normally). The asparagus was pretty good. Hard to drink water after all that liquid but I'm doing it. Haven't seen any stones but I'm not really straining either. If it works I'll do it again the next stone (this was my 6th time in 20 years).

Corline. I've posted in 2010 and 2011 (Lisa) If I ever go through any amount of pain due to what I believe are kidney stones again I will not hesitate to take the coke and asparagus regimen again. I don't know why people shy away from this.

Coke and Asparagus WORKED FOR ME !
Too many of these posts leave you hanging as to whether a remedy worked or what they tried...specifically.
I had been in pain overnight - excruciating pain the next morning - vomited and couldn't keep anything down. So, beginning on an empty stomach I began the coke regimen (one full can every 20 min for two hours - total of 6) Note: I drank the last can too fast and threw it up so, I popped a 7th and drank it carefully. Prior to the last can I had someone warm the can of asparagus with it's juice and puree. I ate the asparagus - all of it (it's not bad guys). And then immediately drinking Distilled water I had a gallon on hand but only got about a quart and a half down before I had to pee with a vengence (I had been able to hold all the cokes and asparagus and 1 1/2 quarts of water up until this point - I think starting on an empty stomach helped). In between cokes I had made a strainer out of a wire coat hanger and some pantyhose. With my strainer handy I did my best immitation of peeing like a race horse and wow - what relief - stones, stones, stones. I don't know why more people don't try this. Coke started out as a drug store item before it became a beverage. Who can possibly think asparagus and distilled water would cause harm.

Truth is that everyone's physiology is a little different and there are many types of stones and many differing causes. What may work for someone may have no effect at all for someone else. One person may need to increase their water intake while another may need to drastically reduce theirs. 24 hour urine tests may help to narrow down the cause but in my case was a total waste of time. Having had 26 plus kidney stones, 6 lithotrips of both types and carrying my current load of stones for over a year now, I can tell you that there is no sure fire cure for renal calcula. Consult a good urologist and in cases like mine a nephrologist to explore the various types of treatments available. Take note that many times the more stones you make increases the likelihood that your stone chemistry can change, requiring a change of treatment. Always consult a physician or a legitimate and well known homeopath before trying any wacky treatments or home remedies as much of the hype on the internet it not only a waste of time but can also be dangerous.

Stinging Nettle Leaf tea. Acute kidney stones or deposits? 4 glasses of Stinging Nettle Leaf tea per day until pain is gone, then 1-2 glasses per day for 3 months in the spring and fall. For men, it also reduces your PSA count (prostate). I know this because my dad just recently had a high PSA count but after 1 year of drinking the tea, it has dramaticly decreased. I can tell you that I have kidney deposits and it always happens in the spring and fall. Not sure why, but the naturopathy said this would happen. When I feel it coming on, I drink the tea and within a day or so, pain is gone. Hey, if nothing else seems to be working, why not give it a try? It's cheepest in the loose leaf form.

Ive been dealing with this stone for about 4 weeks now and just in the past few days has really been beating me up. Im using fresh asparagus, nit sure if it matters or not, i figured fresh is always better than canned.

I've had a kidney stone in each kidney for almost three years now, but I've never been to a urologist. I have had the cat scan though. It's been a rough time! I'm going to start the come and asparagus remedy tonight and all through tomorrow! I've gotta get these things out of me. I can hardly do any work. I urinate blood just from doing the dishes. I was diagnosed by a kidney stone in the ER. It is the worst pain I have ever had in my life! It was 5mm and they released me and gave me Flomax hoping that I will pass it. I followed up after a week with the urologist and he first did a urine test then an x-ray and he told me that it was stuck in the ureter, so he was talking surgery. I wasn't convinced that I need surgery; I always think doctors want you to do the procedure that makes them more money. They always tell you, don't worry the insurance will cover it. I hate hospitals (BTW, the ER visit was my first time in my life in a hospital as a patient) so I started looking for home remedies and came across the coke + asparagus + distilled water. The science behind it made perfect sense to me so I tried it twice (one week apart between the two trials). When I did it the first time, I couldn’t hold myself and I had to pee three times when I was drinking the coke so I wasn’t sure if it worked because I wasn’t straining. The second time I was able to hold myself and only peed once, they say you are not supposed to but there is NO WAY on earth you could hold it after drinking the 4th can of coke. Anyways I started peeing and straining then I saw very tiny white particles, not sure if the stone is dissolved or broken up. I visited my family doctor today and he did a urine test and he said there is not microscopic blood which means there is no stone! He told me even if it is down in the bladder there will be some microscopic blood in the urine. I have an appointment with the urologist in a couple of days and hopefully he will do an x-ray or ultrasound. I will let you know.

I had a stone attack me out of the blue, horrible, horrible pain- right to the ER, spent a night there on morphine drinking water(CAT scan says 8mm stone, less than 50% chance of passing), waiting to pee before they let me home, i wanted to go home so i lied and said i peed when really only a brown dribble came out... Day two-vomiting, back to the ER, CAT scan #2 shows blocked and leaking kidney (into abdomen)... Day 3- fever starting, scheduled stent operation went home home with good pain meds and cipro course- then decided not to do operation, mom arrived with her home remedy of drinking bicarb/baking soda in water- super hard to drink, yucky.
excruciating night- worst ever, total nightmare with no effect from pain meds, had stopped checking with strainer since i was given little to no chance of passing... symptoms stop, no infection. back home and x-ray shows no stone...
anyone else hear of baking soda helping?
no more stones, yet (8 yrs)
good luck to all with recurring stones!!!

I get them time to time..I found that drinking lemon juice and water throughout the day as well as a liter of pom juice helps a great deal to pass. I can only drink Pom 8oz at a time, per day for sugar reasons. I saw the deal w/ ebook cure, and am flatbroke so I am thankful for the comments here and instructions free of charge. I am going to try it but w/ cafnfree/diet bc of sugar issues.I will let u know how it goes..

Praise God. Kidney Stone symtoms suspected on Friday - pain eminating from very low (at the point of where pee comes out) and extending to the rear towards right kidney. I have a good friend that suffers several stones a year. So, I suspected as much. Pain subsided Friday night, but made it's presence know with a vengence on Sat. 10:00 a.m. - doubled over with pain in my abdomen & back but, the most excruciating was the lower pain. I am 50 year old mother of two. They were 9 lbs each at birth - I took no meds. The kidney stone pain was by far the worst pain. I sent my daughter to the store at 2:00p.m. Sat. for the coke, aspar, & distilled water. Begain the regimen at 3:00 by 6:00 was stone free. I passed three stones (may have broken up) with NO PAIN. By the way...after the second coke (and I credit prayer and God the ultimate healer) I was virtually pain free for the remainder ingredients. FYI: I drank the 6th coke too quickly and vomited so, I popped a 7th open. No doctor expense, no pain meds and completed within 48 hours. I won't wait so long the next time (Though Lord willing there on be one. No more coffee with creamer etc.) Praise Him & THANK YOU KAY!!!

I bought the e-book for the kidney stone home remedy. All that money for the asapara gus and coke cure on this website. However, it worked like a charm. It really worked. Instructions: drink one can of Coke (see on the label, phosphoric acid) each 20 minutes for 2 hours. That's 72 ounces total. Then immediately -- within 5 mins -- eat pureed asparagus, at least 8 oz, slightly steamed. Beleive me, it tastes good after all that Coke! Get the phosphoric acid into your bloodstream, then flush it through the kidneys with the asparagus. The Phosphoric acid will dissolve many kinds of stones, but not all, thought the most common are dissolved. Or at least reduced in size. I'm not sure how big mine was -- but 4 hours later the pain subsided. When I finally woke up after sleep, it was all gone. Please try this remedy before expensive doctors -- it can't hurt and might help you.

My first kidney stone was in 1997, was discovered in March and passed in May. Took some herbal remedies, but had to make 3 trips to the ER for pain. 2nd stone was dx'd in May of 2007. Did extensive research and began taking Stonebreaker (chanca piedra). Went to ER in extreme pain on a Thurs. Went online and read about the Coke & asparagus remedy, bought ingredients on Fri, did the routine on Sat. Btw, I bought sugar-free Coke (the kind with Splenda) as my blood sugar runs boderline. Pain increased on Sun, decreased on Mon, and I passed the 5mm stone on Monday night. This was a SIGNIFICANTLY shorter time frame to pass, although it was more intense...well, it felt that way as it all took place in abut 5 days, whereas the 1st stone had episodes that spread over 2 months. I think I've got another stone now... I was doing the magnesium and B6, but not regularly (darn!). If a stone is confirmed, I'll try the Coke & asparagus again... for now, I've started back on the Stonebreaker.

he doesn't say drink it all at once. so, I suspect it is ok to drink it during the day.

One more thing... It is 100% true that constant soda consumption dehydrates and can help cause kidney stones but these things don't form overnight. I didn't let this discourage me from trying this remedy. FLUSH and REHYDRATE after the asparagus and you will be ok. Miserable experience that it was, turned out a miracle.
Posted by Kay on Jul 25 2009 15:00:52
Also may be worth mentioning that I used a straw to drink the coke, seemed to lessen the need to burp which, after about 4 cokes began to feel like the need to vomit. Keep it down! It's no fun but it worked for me. Also, continue drinking lots of water ( forever ) and add some vitamin c to your diet. When kidney stones pass they tear, and you don't wantto get a urinary tract infection.

Coke and Asparagus kidney stone flush home remedy is as follows:
first off, I am not a doctor, just a girl who gave this home remedy a shot with 100% success. It worked in 4 hours to help me pass a 4mm calcium stone (the most common kind). I had the stone just under 2 weeks and had been doing the aforementioned lemon and olive oil remedy for 5 days.
FOLLOW EXACTLY and gather:
something to strain your urine (I caught mine in a cup and strained it through panty hose)
6 cans or bottles or measured cups of 12oz COKE (all sites I checked said it must be coke, original not diet. That is what I used though I am of the opinion that diabetics could use diet because it's the acid that breaks down the stone, not the sugar...but that's an untested OPINION).
1 can asparagus spears intheir own juices
one gallon pure water and a timer, timing is CRUCIAL.
Start on an empty stomach, this is going to bloat you a bit.
Every 20 min drink one 12oz serving of coke
do this for 2 hours ( hence 6 servings ) try to pee as little as possible you want that acid in your system.
Immediately after the last coke, have the asparagus mashed or purée ready and consume ALL of it. Asparagus is a natural diuretic and will begin to flush the acid from the coke through the kidneys.
MOST IMPORTANT immediately after the asparagus you MUST begin to flush water back through your body. The soda dehydrated you and as you rehydrate (at least a liter the first hour after the asparagus) prepare for the pee of your life. Keep drinking water, you will feel like hell from all that sugar but the more water you force down the faster you will "eliminte" (and MAN ALIVE will you ever) and you"ll feel better.
I began this remedy at 4:40, finished completely by 7:30, and passed my jagged little stone pain free at 11 pm.
I'll never drink a coke again.
Good Luck

Got diagnosed with my first kidney 2 weeks ago. For a few days I had no clue what was wrong. Cat scan revealed a 4mm stone at juncture of kidney and ureter. Doctor gave me pain meds and a "good luck" and sent me on my way. Went home and started researching, this is what I found. Stones 5mm or less pass without surgery 80% of the time. I tried the 2 oz olive oil 2 oz fresh lemon juice and while I have no doubt that it helped move my stone (and kept me completely off my pain meds) it was still taking to long to pass. I kept searching and found the "coke and asparagus remedy." I will post it here ( think I'm running out of room on this form.)

Ever since my husband started drinking filtered water instead of tap water, the frequency of kidney stones has been reduced. When he does get smaller ones, he uses an effective although unconvential approach...he drinks ALOT of beer..(like 12 cans plus)-not to get drunk, but to flush it out. Last one was flushed out in 4 hours!

I may have misspoke. I meant a lack of magnesium and B6 will cause kidney stones. heh. Baked potatoes with the skin is a pretty good food for this.

Very interesting Tim. I will definitely try that. I've been doing a lot of reading today, and I seen various websites saying a lack of magnesium and vitamin B6 will also do the trick. Maybe I will combine the lemon water with more magnesium and B6.

Kidney stones hurt..... OUCH! I have to go to the Doc to get mine taken out. Just love those internal stints....whoa boy! Anyhow... I digress... drink 4 oz lemon juice and 4 oz of water mixed... its stout, but if you think cranberry juice will do the trick...you are wasting your time and money. The lemon juice will literally attack the stones and break them down to a more passable subject. I had kidney stones at ages 24, 27, and 29. Started doing the lemon juice and I haven't been stoned since, and I am 38 now.
