Kidney Stones Home Remedy

Signs and Symptoms of Kidney Stones

A kidney stone is a small, grainy deposit that develops in the kidney due to a buildup of calcium crystals and other minerals in urine. These stones can range from about the size of a grain of sand up to the size of a pencil eraser. Eventually, this stone has to pass through the ureter, which is a small passage that is primarily meant to carry liquid. This results in the most common symptom of kidney stones: sudden and intense pain. Other symptoms may include:

  • Wave-like pain, usually in the side of the mid-back, which radiates to the groin area and cannot be prevented by adjusting your position or sitting still.
  • Small amounts of blood in the urine.
  • Sweating, nausea, or vomiting.

Most kidney stones will usually eventually pass through the body by drinking lots of fluids. However, some may require surgery to be removed. Therefore, it is important to consult your doctor if you suspect that you have kidney stones.

Causes of Kidney Stones

Calcium and other minerals in the body are normally flushed away during urination. Kidney stones develop when the concentration of these minerals in your urine is too high, resulting in a buildup of these crystals that form into a hard deposit. Diet plays a significant role in determining what kinds of minerals accumulate in your urine. Oxalate is one of the main components of kidney stones, so you can help prevent stones from developing by reducing your intake of oxalate-rich foods such as chocolate, nuts, beans, spinach, grapes, strawberries, blueberries, and black tea.

Home Remedies and Natural Treatments for Kidney Stones

Drinking Water to Prevent Kidney Stones

Drinking more water helps to increase the volume of urine. This in turn helps to decrease the amount of stone-forming elements that build-up. Therefore, a common recommendation to help a kidney stone pass through the body more quickly is to consume close to a gallon (almost 4 liters) of water throughout the day. If you’ve previously had a kidney stone, drinking more water is also a good way to prevent the recurrence of them.

Magnesium

Foods that are rich in magnesium have been found to help prevent the development of kidney stones, since magnesium helps lower the amount of oxalate minerals in urine. Good sources of magnesium are fish, rice, avocado, and broccoli.

Reducing Salt Intake

Eating foods that are high in salt and sodium have been found to increase the amount of calcium in urine, which increases the chances of developing a kidney stone. Therefore, a good guideline is to reduce daily salt intake to 2-3 grams. It is best to avoid high salt foods such as ketchup, mustard, luncheon meats, and snack foods such as chips and pretzels.

Asparagus for Kidney Stones

Asparagus is commonly used as a natural diuretic. It can help rid the body of excess salt and fluid, making it good for people suffering from edema, kidney stones and high blood pressure. It helps flush out toxins in kidneys and prevent kidney stones.

A 2012 study1 published on the National Library of Medicine website suggests that the anti-urolithiatic activity of Asparagus Racemosus may be attributed to its diuretic effect, which increases urine volume, and its ability to inhibit the deposition of calcium oxalate crystals in the kidneys. The researchers concluded that Asparagus Racemosus extract exhibited significant anti-urolithiatic activity in the rat model of ethylene glycol-induced kidney stones. These findings support its potential use as a natural remedy for preventing kidney stone formation.

My friend has a 1cm kidney stone (yes that’s 10 mm). It’s been three or four months now. She drinks lots of water but these days she can’t urinate much, not even half or quarter of what she drinks. Would drinking coke in too much quantity be okay? Does this coke remedy have any side effects? Help plz. Don’t really want to go for any surgical procedure.

Drink Potato Water. Boil a potato in water and when the potato is ready, let the water cool and drink the water 3 times a day. This is a traditional remedy to eliminate the stones. I had the experience and it worked.

The best old time remedy is olive oil and lemon juice. Take about two oz. of each mixed together at night before you go to bed and l;ay on your right side for about half an hour with your nee pulled toward your chest. This can be drank at anytime not just before bedtime. Also good to drink in between the olive oil and lemon juice is apple juice.

    sir,
there is a 7.5mm stone in upper left ureter. what is the best suggestion for me.

@ Shashikant Jalan, yes it is coke, asparagus and distilled water. Start with 6 cans of Coke, drinking one every 20 minutes (finish them in 2 hrs) and immediately after it, eat about 8 oz. steamed and pureed Asparagus or a can of Asparagus might work too. And then drink at least 8 glasses of water. If you want to see the stones for your satisfaction, use a strainer made out of cloth or pantyhose when peeing. It works like magic, the only catch is doing all that in order and without any gaps. Good luck!

raise God. Kidney Stone symtoms suspected on Friday – pain eminating from very low (at the point of where pee comes out) and extending to the rear towards right kidney. I have a good friend that suffers several stones a year. So, I suspected as much. Pain subsided Friday night, but made it’s presence know with a vengence on Sat. 10:00 a.m. – doubled over with pain in my abdomen & back but, the most excruciating was the lower pain. I am 50 year old mother of two. They were 9 lbs each at birth – I took no meds. The kidney stone pain was by far the worst pain. I sent my daughter to the store at 2:00p.m. Sat. for the coke, aspar, & distilled water. Begain the regimen at 3:00 by 6:00 was stone free. I passed three stones (may have broken up) with NO PAIN. By the way…after the second coke (and I credit prayer and God the ultimate healer) I was virtually pain free for the remainder ingredients. FYI: I drank the 6th coke too quickly and vomited so, I popped a 7th open. No doctor expense, no pain meds and completed within 48 hours. I won’t wait so long the next time (Though Lord willing there on be one. No more coffee with creamer etc.) Praise Him & THANK YOU KAY!!!

Have passed 18 kidney stones in past 5 years. Three this year. The last one yesterday 5mm. Passed with Apple Cider Vinager tablets, lemon juice, olive oil. Drink shot of fresh lemon juice topped with olive oil the ACV tablets. Drink alka-selter for pain. It took 7 days but not alot of pain. I only drink the above when in pain…Other days just drink alot of water. Could not afford hospital visits even with insurance. Last stone they charged ,000….. Good luck

I am 36 yrs old I have kidney stone of 7.5mm stone . please suggest some natural way to get rid from it.

  21. Got the result of kub as i read it . Had kidney stone 8,8mm in my left and 4,4mm in my right.though sometimes i only felt a tolerable pain , still decided to consult it to the specialist. Today at 2pm my urologist will read it and lets see what he can recommend. Done all the research including all of you guys shared, lucky to those of you who did it naturally. Still,I am ready to a shockwave treatment than surgery there isn’t adverse effect but effective this is the latest option of surgery . But my belief in natural way never change, this morning i tried to drink 1/2c lemon and 1/2c virgin coconut oil.i know it’s not that fast but one thing for sure I cleanse my intestines. I will keep you posted as soon as my kidney stone successfully gone.

there’s 7.5mm stone in my left urine pipe. Will it passe if i drink a lot of water?

I have 5 kidney stones blocked in both sides, i have 3 on the left and 2 on the right, i have had these now for 18 months, i had the scan a year ago, was told that because they are blocked in both urethra tubes, keep getting such bad renal coliac, i am on tablets for the pain, and i drink alot of water daily, they gave me some tablets at the hospital but they affected my bladder, i kept wetting myself, so i stopped those tablets rubbish, been told they can’t blast them because of the other organs in the way, so i have had this past year putting up with renal coliac, how anyone can go through one, but 5 of them, dear god i must have been a bad person in my last life.

Now, i was told to try coconut oil with lemon juice, i have tried two lots of this, this evening, not sure if anyone has mentioned this, but it feels like my whole body is being curdled, will know tomorrow i guess if i have passed them, or i end up ringing for an ambulance, i hate being put on that ward for kidney infection, they put the patients on high dosage of morphine and it sends people nuts, so the ward resembles more of a mental health ward.

Well, good luck to everyone, i will pop back if this is a success, i kind of hate sugar, so cola is abit of a no no for me, i also must tell you, this stuff gives you a bad headache, but the pain of renal coliac is worth any pain if it gets rid of the bloody things!

Here it goes.6 cups water 1 cup real lemon lemon juice and sugar to taste. This lemonade will dissolve kidney stones. I keep it on hand all the time. My kidneys (both kidneys) were packed with stones. My urologist gave me this recipe and it worked. Cleared my kidneys up!

  25. I as well had a 8mm stone. I found a guide that might help other suferers with preventing the stones again.

  26. I was diagnosed with kidney stones in July 2012. I was told my 11mm stone would not pass by itself and I was referred to a urologist. No way in hell was I going to be having surgery if I didn’t require it, so I visited my mate ‘Google’ for natural remedies. I too did the coke and asparagus trick, and wouldn’t you know -I have had huge success! I have had a ‘niggle’ every now and again, but figure because the stone was so big, it was breaking down each time, so therefore I have had to do this remedy a couple of times. Mind you – this is a huge feat for me, as I detest soft drinks in my house and loathe asparagus, but for the purpose of the exercise, it was worth every bit of it. I am just so happy I tried this before surgery.

  27. Coke and Asparagus WORKED FOR ME ! Too many of these posts leave you hanging as to whether a remedy worked or what they tried…specifically. I had been in pain overnight – excruciating pain the next morning – vomited and couldn’t keep anything down. So, beginning on an empty stomach I began the coke regimen (one full can every 20 min for two hours – total of 6) Note: I drank the last can too fast and threw it up so, I popped a 7th and drank it carefully. Prior to the last can I had someone warm the can of asparagus with it’s juice and puree. I ate the asparagus – all of it (it’s not bad guys). And then immediately drinking Distilled water I had a gallon on hand but only got about a quart and a half down before I had to pee with a vengence (I had been able to hold all the cokes and asparagus and 1 1/2 quarts of water up until this point – I think starting on an empty stomach helped). In between cokes I had made a strainer out of a wire coat hanger and some pantyhose. With my strainer handy I did my best immitation of peeing like a race horse and wow – what relief – stones, stones, stones. I don’t know why more people don’t try this. Coke started out as a drug store item before it became a beverage. Who can possibly think asparagus and distilled water would cause harm. That said, while asparagus does have oxalic acid it’s predominate medicinal property is asparagine – nature’s most effective kidney diruetic. While coke’s property that lend’s itself to correcting kidney stones is that of phosphoric acid – which as everyone knows, will desolve iron. Coke disolves the stone and asparagus flushes it out of our system. It’s not like your given a prescription to do this 3 times daily. It’s a one shot deal….. and it worked for me.

Coke and Asparagus. I have a 4.4 mm stone.Cat scan revealed on Friday.Doc never called me back to tell me what i should do or to prescribe anything.
So i got 6 cans of coke. One by one i poured into a glass and stirred it til it became flat.(Just makes downing it lots easier.)Also once it was flat i squeezedte juice of a whole lemon into each glass of flat coke i drank.
I boiled some fresh asparagus and put it in the blender and only drank 8 oz of it.
Then i looked at the table and the 6th flat soda with lemon is sitting there waiting for me and i thougbt awh crap i did it wrong! ?Oh well screw it ,I downed it anyway and washed the asparagus down with it.
Damn i was full. So i waited bout 20 to 30 minutes and started drinking my 8 oz of water every 20 minutes til i had drank a gallon.Damn this takes about Four hours to complete.i was so full tired and ready to pass out.Never threw up though i wanted to.Kept trying to walk around the house.
I dont know if this worked. Peed allot and very clear water looking urine.
No more dark urine. But i never caught a stone in strainer.
Within 24 hours of duin this ,my pain left me. Which was fine by me.Still trying to preservere with lemon water and pineapple oj and water water water.
I think i read that you can or should only try this coke remedy every 3 days if necessary.I guess if pain comes back I’ll try again…..God bless all….preservere…help and love one another….peace…

I’ve read that orthophosphoric acid was useful for breaking down or expelling kidney stones, but also that phosphorous is often a constituent/cause of kidney stones. I wonder how much of the answer is in the balance or ratio of calcium to phosphorous to magnesium. Have no kidney stones that I know of, but am having gallbladder pains and was looking into using chanca piedra (stonebreaker) before trying a liver/gallbladder flush. I’ve been using high doses of vitamin C for years and usually buffered it with calcium and magnesium, but no phosphorous. DUH. Finally dawned on me and I found some backup for this, that this could tend to cause maldistribution of calcium, or calcium deposits. I’m inclined to begin cautiously using some of the phosphoric acid with my cal/mag to try to balance it out. Can’t see stopping the vitamin C and minerals, feel awful when I do. But concerned about calcium deposits in kidneys and elsewhere.

  30. Phosphoric Acid (E338) [H3PO4] in coke …>>>
Phosphoric acid is a clear, transparent, odorless liquid also known as E338, phosphoric(V) acid and orthophosphoric acid with molecular formula H3PO4. Food grade phosphoric acid is viscous or syrupy in consistency obtained via white phosphorus. Phosphorous is a substance that occurs naturally in everyday food like meat, fish, poultry, milk, noodles, potatoes, peas, corn, egg yolks and nuts.
    Uses
Phosphoric acid is used as an acidulant in colas the ingredient that gives them a tangy flavor. It is used as an ingredient in cake flour and bread dough, to lend acidity and control the pH levels of imitation jellies and jams, in sugar refining, as a yeast nutrient and in the production of cottage cheese. Phosphoric acid is useful in controlling the growth of bacteria in processed foods, degumming of palm oil, and as a supplement in animal feeds.
    Health Benefits
Phosphorus is an important mineral and assists other nutrients in proving health benefits to the body. It works with Vitamin D and calcium in almost every chemical reactions happening in the human body. It is important for the normal structure of the bone and tooth and is essential for normal kidney function, healthy nerve impulses, the metabolization of starches and fats, energy production and the proper utilization of other vitamins and minerals.
    Health Concerns
There had been studies linking phosphoric acid to lower bone density. Consumption of cola containing high levels of phosphoric acid causes a higher risk of forming kidney stones, chronic kidney problems and osteoporosis

Tim, you haven’t been stoned since you were 29? Wow! Amazing… Let me ask… how does the lemon juice actually get to the stone in your kidney? Doesn’t your body digest the lemon juice first in your stomach, then small and large intestine, so that by the time it even has a chance to get to your kidneys it has already been broken down into its individual components? Just curious…

  32. Any more results / recommendations re the asparagus and Coke ‘remedy’? I tried it 10 days ago with Diet Coke, apparently to no avail. However, I’m game to try it again — maybe with real Coke this time? I have a 7.5 mm stone that’s been sitting a little more than halfway down my left ureter the last couple of weeks, and will be forced to go in for a laser procedure at the end of next week if I still am unable to pass it on my own. Any thoughts, recommendations or testimonials would be GREATLY appreciated. Thanks!

  33. I had a lithotripsy and it did not work at all. Hospital has now billed me for ,000. Should I have to pay for this?

The best cure for kidney stone that I have seen with my eye is drinking banana plantain water. Cut the banana plant to ground level, leaving rest of the stem inside. Make a crater like in the submerged stem and put some cumin seeds, cover and leave over night. Next morning, you can see water has accumulated in the crater that we made the day before. Drink that water after brushing the teeth. Continue doing this for a week.

This is the treatment that my grandpa gave to a guy who was diagnosed with kidney stones. Within a week, in the next check-up, there were no kidney stones. This drink is good for every person.

Alternative, but less effective solution would be to drink banana plantain stem juice. To prepare that, cut plantain stems into small chunks, add cumin, buttermilk and a pinch of salt; put in a blender, strain and drink.

  35. bekah

Turnip juice. Find a juicer, juice turnips enough to drink it all day. Turnip juice will make the stone pass.

  36. Dori, Hi, just wondered how you are doing following your recent kidney stone episode? Lisa

  37. Sorry, I forgot to add a little background on my previous post. The reason why I took the courage to try this Coke Asparagus method is because I don’t want to take the risk of damaging my left kidney through another round of ESWL/Lithotripsy. Within a decade, I’ve had kidney stones twice previously. I went through 2 Lithotripsy with the first experience, and 1 Lithotripsy at the second time I got kidney stones. Now I’m having my third experience with kidneystones. All had been recurred in the same left kidney. I’m aware that ESWL could reduce the kidney’s function, I feel very reluctant to do another ESWL, hence my attempt with the Coke & Asparagus method, which I hope will bring positive results.
If this doesn’t work, I might going to try Chanca Piedra. Has anyone here ever tried it? Appreciate if you could please share your experience with me. Many thanks in advance..

  38. Can anyone who have done the Coke & Asparagus method please help explain how long will it take for the stones to pass, or whether I should repeat this regime (for how many times & what’s the interval) until I can start seeing any stones come out?
I’ve just tried the Coke Asparagus method several hours a go. However, my stomach was not exactly empty at the time I started the regime (I had my supper 2 hours prior to that). Two hours down the row, after I gulped down 6 cans of Coke (I drank each can every 20 minutes) followed by a huge bowl of Asparagus puree and about a quart of water (which I could barely keep down – I vomited a little amount of asparagus afterwards), I still haven’t seen any stones passed yet so far, despite of having been to the toilet for several times now.
Now my stomach hurts so much, my left kidney feels like burning, and I can feel throbbing pain along my pelvic bone towards my groin.
I’ve no clue whether this is what we’re supposed to experience, or whether it’s a wrong result. All I can tell now is I’m having a quite serious diarrhea, and so far have not seen any stones passed (I use stocking as strainer when I urinate).
Thanks in advance for your help, it is truly appreciated. This site is awesome btw 🙂
    Cheers.

My wife is suffering too much pain for last two days and today came to know it’s a 4mm kidney stone in her left kidney and few more small stones also in both kidneys. She is pregnant but only 4 weeks, so gynecologist and urologist told could not give any medications for 2-3 months. These two days they gave painkiller injection which not to be affect pregnancy. Now discharged to home and advised to have one pain killer if too much pain and to have a plenty of water. Please advice if any natural remedy for this which should not affect her pregnancy. She is not able to suffer this pain. Thanks in advance.

  42. Pearl

I’ve been battling kidney stones for the last 7 years since the birth of my 3rd child. For the longest time I would just put up with the pain which seem to come every 2-3 months… and would push fluids until the pain subsided. I was able to pass several small stones this way. Last year I read about the Coke/Asparagus treatment and decided to give it a try. I’ve done the treatment 3 times with positive results. The first time I passed a total of 4 stones within 2 weeks of treatment. I am a true believer of this treatment. Although it won’t work for everyone’s stone, but around 80% of all stones are calcium oxalate based and this treatment indeed can help with those stones… and what have you got to lose, except the pain & stones. Good luck all, with your endeavors to get rid of this thing that we we unfortunately are cursed with… and don’t forget to continue to drink plenty of H2O to help prevent new stones from forming!!!

  43. Sunshine

I was diagnosed with a 4mm stone in my left side last Wednesday night about 10:30 pm. Went back to the ER on Saturday morning as the pain was still there and nothing I could do seemed to help. They changed my pain medication and added Flomax to what I was taking for pain. I am drinking lots of water, apple juice and cranberry juice, yet still no stone. My pain seems to be get better and I have started vomiting. I just wonder can it just all the sudden stop like that? Go from stabbing pain to just an ache? My urine seem to change to, very dark and strong in the mornings to almost clear when I go to bed. Is this normal? When I vomit it has a yellow bubble liquid in it that taste terrible when I am passing it. What is this? I just ache now not really in pain just a constant ache from the left side near my spine around to the front almost to my belly button. Do all kidney stones make you feel like this? I have a Dr. appointment in the morning with a urologist to see about the stone. Don’t know if I should keep it though as I am not in terrible pain any more. I just want to know if what i am feeling now is normal with stones? It’s like I am constantly aware of the ache.

  44. Sweta dear, you need a little reproductive education. Your kidneys (and kidney stones) have NO CONNECTION to your ability to get pregnant or prevent pregnancy.
Consult your physician and get valid means of contraception.

  45. Sweta

    Sir,
I have stone in both my Kidneys.I am about to get married and would like to confirm that will it stop me in any way from getting pregnant

  46. Aaron, you seem to have a background that would seem to lend you the best opportunity to consult with the medical community yourself. This seems very contradictory to what I learned about kidney stones in nursing school. Calcium stones are the most common type of stones people get, and foods high in oxalate are supposed to be avoided with these types of stones. Asparagus and sodas are among the top of the list of oxalate-rich foods. But I’ve read a lot of positive reports about this treatment, can someone with some medical background explain physiologically how this is supposed to work?

  48. kevin

hi guys i recently went up to the hospital for a x-ray with a suspected kidney stone ive never sufferd from this before.

allthough the pain wasn’t rly bad like some of you have expressed it still hurt quite abit anyway the x-ray came back clear normally id be jumping for joy however i’m not convinced it isnt a stone should i go back to the doctors?

  49. Stef: Yep, drinking cola beverages on a daily basis isn’t good – it will leach calcium… BUT WHEN YOU HAVE A KIDNEY STONE BLASTING CALCIUM IS WHAT YOU WANT !!! You can always follow up with yogurt. Lisa

  50. I also suffer from kidney stones and I have noticed that taking Chanca Piedra has truly helped my pain, its from a health store and its only per bottle. i take three tabs per day and my pain is eased and i feel better. I have incresed my water intake. Whomever is suggesting to drink COKE is a remedy is ridiculous! Coke had acid in it which leaches the calcium from your bones out into your blood stream and causes KIDNEY STONES!!! So DO NOT try that! I was drinking diet coke everyday thats when I had the pain, I switched to No COLA, just water, light juices, and caffeine free drinks…try it…it may help!
