Signs and Symptoms of Yeast Infection
A yeast infection is a common bacterial infection caused by candida albicans, which is a strain of yeast that naturally live on the human body in small numbers. Yeast infections commonly inflict women in the vaginal area, with the following symptoms:- A thick, white, and odorless discharge from the vagina.
- Itching and burning inside as well as outside the vagina.
- A burning sensation during urination.
- Slight pain or discomfort during sexual intercourse.
Causes of Yeast Infection
Although the bacteria that lead to yeast infections naturally exist on our bodies, their numbers are kept under control by the acidity level inside of the vagina. However, a drop in this acidity level may allow the yeast to flourish, leading to an infection. There are a number of possible reasons why this imbalance may occur:- Pregnancy or menstrual cycles may cause a yeast infection, due to the hormonal changes that a woman undergoes in these situations.
- Antibiotics, steroids, and certain birth control pills can cause yeast infections.
- Excessive moisture inside of the vaginal region can lead to infections.
- Individuals diagnosed with diabetes have been known to be more susceptible to yeast infections.
- Consuming large amounts of sweets and other high-sugar foods can lead to recurring infections.
Home Remedies and Natural Cures for Yeast Infection Treatment
Yeast Infection Home Remedy Using Tea Tree Oil
Tea Tree Oil can be used as a highly effective
douche treatment against yeast infections.
It is recommended that you purchase a small dropper bottle that can be used to store the solution.
- Combine 1 teaspoon of Tea Tree Oil with 1 teaspoon of isopropyl alcohol (rubbing alcohol).
- Mix the solution, which should appear milky white.
- Store the solution in the dropper bottle.
- Add 10 drops of the solution to a pint of water.
- Use this douche once a day for a week in order to rinse the vagina.
Natural Remedy for Yeast Infection With Yogurt
The active bacterial cultures in yogurt help to fight yeast, which is
one of the main reasons why many people have found it to be effective at treating a yeast infection.
In the case of vaginal infections, a simple remedy is to dip a tampon in plain, unsweetened yogurt, and insert the tampon into the vagina.
Repeat this twice a day until symptoms disappear.
For other types of yeast infections, applying yogurt directly onto the surface for 10 to 15 minutes each day works well.
If your infection persists for longer than a week, it is best to consult your doctor.
If your infection persists for longer than a week, it is best to consult your doctor.
Garlic as a Natural Cure for Yeast Infection
Many people have found that garlic is wonderful at fighting yeast infections.
Simply insert one garlic clove directly into the vagina, and repeat this every few hours for 2 days.
You can also take garlic internally, either as tablets or by crushing a fresh garlic clove into a few small pieces and quickly swallowing the pieces with a glass of water.

Boric acid can be used as an antiseptic for minor burns or cuts and is sometimes used in dressings or salves or is applied in a very dilute solution as an eye wash in a 1.5% solution (1 tbsp per quart or 15 cm3 per L) of sterilized water. As an anti-bacterial compound, boric acid can also be used as an acne treatment. Boric acid can be used to treat yeast and fungal infections such as candidiasis (vaginal yeast infections) by inserting a vaginal suppository containing 600 mg of boric acid daily for 14 days[11] or for yeast infection of the male pubic region (jock-itch or strong genital odor) by applying the powder to the skin all over the pubic region for several days to a week. It is also used as prevention of athlete's foot, by inserting powder in the socks or stockings, and in solution can be used to treat some kinds of otitis externa (ear infection) in both humans and animals.

Foremost, I would like to thank everyone for being so informtive and candid(a) on this subject. I am at my wit's end. If I thought it would help, I'd pour kerosene on my crotch and insert a sparkler... (oh wait, it already feels like I did!) I'm going to try some suggestions. Thank you again! I wish you all happy private parts! >.<

Ladies... you do not have to mess around with yogurt on tampons, or douching garlic, (yuck) Just go to your local health food store, and in the refridgerator you will find probiotics for the vagina sold with an applicator. This is VERY EFFECTIVE and will cure your yeast infection completely. I would also recommend taking a quality oral probiotic daily, since I have been doing that I never get yeast infections anymore!!

I am going to every website that I remember looking at when I was searching for an alternative treatment for YI and posting what worked for me: boric acid. I did the research after two over the counter kits, a doctor prescribed cream, the diflucan pill, garlic cloves, yogurt, peroxide douches, and tea tree oil failed to help my ongoing/reoccurring infection. Nothing worked for more than a day or two, if at all. I began to wonder what was wrong with me - I had done everything right, cut back on sugar, switched laundry soaps, stopped using shower gel, gave up pantyhose, wore cotton underwear - nothing helped. Then my sister in law came to visit. She tracked down some gelatin capsules (health food store) and boric acid (drug store). I filled a 00 size capsule about 1/2 way up and inserted it at night before bed. I did this for 4 nights and I have been YI free since then. Please, if you're at wits end like I was, just try this. It might be your miracle cure too.

First it in nice to know I'm not alone in having a chronic yeast issue! I have found that the Yeast Guard products are wonderful. It is over-the-counter and homeopathic! I also read that women who live in areas where coconut is a large part of their diet have no reported yeast infections. The article recommended eating coconut (non sweetened)and using coconut oil in cooking. It tastes wonderful! These are a few things that have helped me over my 20 year search for a cure.

Hello, this questions is for anyone who has used garlic as a suppository to treat a yeast infection- how long does the smell last? I used the treatment for three nights and I reek!
Posted by Mary G. on Nov 20 2009 15:06:02
For Anonymous with the four-year yeast infection. Try giving up wheat and gluten for a week or two. I also had yeast infections for four years (constant) and my sister had them for eight years (constant). We both quit eating wheat/gluten (bread, etc.) and have not had another one unless we eat wheat or gluten. It's worth a try!

It's always good to use tea tree oil rinse until yeast infection is completely gone. Everybody is different in healing time therefore there is no fixed treatment period. It's only you who can tell if you are cured. For peace of mind, the best thing to do is when you think yeast infection is gone, go for a check up to make sure it is cured. I know Tea tree oil works for yeast infection! I start using it every time I sense it coming.

So I am using the tea tree oil treatment and I have been doing so for about two days now..does anyone know how long I should use the treatment for so that I know that my yeast infection is completly gone
Posted by Anonymous on Oct 20 2009 02:06:29
Yes, yeast infection can start after exercise if we don't take shower and change sweaty undergarments. Yeast infection flourish in damp and moist conditions because moisture interferes with the acidity levels of vaginal area. Therefore, make sure change undergarments after workouts!

Does exercising cause yeast infection? i never had yeast infection till three days ago after working out from the gym. I haven't change anything in my diet or my life style. so i'm not sure how or why i have yeast infection. but i did visit my doctor today and she took sample from my vagina. But she told me i don't have any infection. I haven't changed sex partners and i have been exercising for a long time. so i'm really confused with this whole thing. SOME ONE PLEASE HELP.

I feel bad for you for suffering through Yeast Infection for so many years. I think first you should try to find out what is causing it so frequently. I'd suggest cutting down on sugar intake, stop using any fragrant soaps or body washes, and adding yogurt your diet. Also take Oregano oil or any other immune booster to strengthen your immune system and wash the vaginal area with 2-3 drops of tea tree oil in a glass of water. Then apply Monistat Derm for the rest of the day. Make it a habit. It worked for me. I used all that along with monistat caps. I hope it helps! Good luck!

Re: Using herbal remedies during breastfeeding?
I think external use of any herbal remedy is safe during breastfeeding period!
Posted by Anonymous on Oct 14 2009 23:14:56
i have been having conic yeast infection for about 4 years( a new infection 2-3 times a month) i have tried the over the counter cream and it worked a dozen or so times (fyi canestin is the best one i tried and there really is a difference) when that stopped working i tried diflucan which worked about 3 times then didn't anymore. I've tried dida an herbal remedy for yeast infection which kept the infection away for one month approx then reoccurred. I've tried eating yogert that defiantly had no affect, same with taking the pro-biotic pills. i have found that sticking a acidophiles ( pro-biotic ) up your private helps relieve symptoms fairly rapidly but is a bit messy ( wearing a liner helps) i suggest using high quality capsules as they are the best the cheep super store ones are not as good noticeably. i tried a candidas cleanse called candida gone and in the last 4 days i got strep throat went on antibiotics and strait into the worst infection of my life. I've also tried Chinese remedies also with limited luck. if any one has any help for me I'm in some serious need of it. oh one more thing that has been the best thing I've found so far its a suppository of glycerin and boric acid that your doctor prescribes not perfect but worked really well the first time. I'm hoping to find a permanent cure all that i have listed ( some that worked ) have only been temporary, at best one month of freedom. if anyone has something to help me be free of these infections I'd appreciate it
Posted by Joy on Oct 14 2009 03:26:21
Use the garlic clove, the yogurt, or a combination. Garlic is antifungal and antibacterial, so will kill candida albicans and bacterial vaginosis, but will not cause irritation or eat away the delicate skin in your personal areas. That can happen if you have too strong a concentration of tea tree oil. Also there was a case where they thought tea tree oil was causing boys to grow breasts. Anything that may pose a hormone risk or damage to the birth canal should not be used during pregnancy.

Try a Candida Detox!! I had recurring yeast infections for 2 years!!! I got it every month before my period started. It was awful! Tried all sorts of prescriptions, Diflucan, etc.. nothing worked. So I did a RenewLife CandiGone detox. 2 weeks, no sugar, take the herbal supplements and ALL MY YEAST INFECTIONS WERE GONE. It has been 4 years now since then. AND, I had the added benefit of getting rid of my acne with the detox. I had volcanoes on my face but after one week on the detox, my skin cleared up and I haven't had acne since. =) It was a miracle for me. Now I get comments by health professionals about how great my skin is! It glows! All that for a herbal detox. I can't recommend it more. =)

I had bacterial vaginitious and now from the drugs I took I have a yeast infection. I am scared to put anything internal because my PH is finally normal. What can I do externally or oral and what is most effective. I also seem to be very warm in that general region (butt, hips thighs) is it possible I have another infection or is that from the yeast?

Don\\'t waste your money buying the natural-cure-for-yeast-infection ebook. It basically has everything we already know about yeast infections and in the book has the same remedies as above. Trust me, i know.. I bought it.

I believe I have a yeast infection caused by birth control pills, but the infection started showing signs during my period. It's driving me insane, and I have a doctors appt. today. However, I'm scared, as I'm an american living in Peru. The medical system is a bit behind that of the U.S.
I think I'm going to have to resort to using these home remedies. I'm glad I found this site.
I feel more embarrassed though, since I have to bring my boyfriend with me, as he is my translator.

I have found thta the best treatment for yeast infection is to buy garlic oil capsule and insert the capsule in the vagina. ( Use capsules that dilute easily). Another alternative is wild oregano oil mix with a water base cream ( Aqueaous cream) for itchy skin and inflamed skin outside the vagina. You can alos take wild oregano capsule + garlic oil capsules everyday it will prevent yeast infections. I hope it helps.

Girls/Women....Please see your doctor before trying any of these home remedies. Go to your GYN and get a culture test to find out what the problem really is.
Most doctor are open when it comes to home remedies. Your doctor could help you monitor your self treatment and if it does not work the doctor can give you a perscription.
White discharde could be more than a yeast infection. It could tricamonia which could be cured by taking a couple of pills twicw a day for 7 days.

You should definitely see a doctor. Even if it is not a yeast infection, whatever it is, it is treatable with either antibiotics or anti-fungal medicines. I had a yeast infection, and I was prescribe diflucan. I took the one pill. It didn't really go away. I took another. It felt better a week or 2 later- but I still felt I had it. I saw another doctor, and he put me on another type of anti-bacteria that kills the remaining bacteria, as he said the diflucan only kills on strand - the candidas albicans. There is still remaining bacteria that needs to be killed. This helped me. BUT, I still recommend a healthy diet with low sugar, caffeine and yeast- i.e. a good ph.

I heard about this and tried it -- this works!
Purchase a small spray bottle and regular, inexpensive hydrogen peroxide -- the kind that comes in the little brown bottle. Put just plain tap water (you may use distilled if you have it)in the bottle to fill 1/4 way. Fill the rest of the way with hydrogen peroxide. After showering and cleaning yourself and drying, and after every urination, spray yourself with this solution --- and drip-dry!! Using toilet paper or anything else can spread the infection. Change your all-cotton underwear 3- 4 times a day (white is preferable and the hydrogen peroxide won't bleach it out.) You should notice relief in about 3 hours of using this solution! IT WORKS!
I also went to bed two nights in a row with plain yogurt (no sugar in it!)inside me -- I used the tubes that come with the vaginal creams. Eating the yogurt (not the same container, obviously) will also help.

This is for Evie - I also got re-occuring yeast rashes under by breasts and my doctor recommended using a Lotrimin foot powder, full strength until the rash was gone the then a half-and-half mixture of Lotrimin and Ammens Medicated Powder for maintaining. This was four years ago and I have not had the rash since.

I've found the absolute best way in dealing with yeast is prevention. Yeast grows off sugar, so it's essential to eliminate all sugars from your daily diet for at least the two weeks your treating yourself for the infection. Afterwards I would reduce my intake of all sugars, including friut juice. Also it's a great idea to try a yeast free bread sold at the health food stores. Ezekiel bread is pretty good. Cooking your food with onions, garlic,(strong anti-fungal qualities),ginger is also very helpful in fighting candida overgrowth. I found chaning the way I eat, drink, and getting some exercise weekly has really helped me overcoming the yeast infections. An added bonus the month I went sugar, and bread free I lost ten pounds, and my digestion felt wonderful!! I really hope this post helps someone. Be Healthy. HEAL*THY*SELF

Hi Elizabeth,
Using the Tea Tree Oil douche to treat a yeast infection is not recommended if you are pregnant. During pregnancy, it is best to consult with your doctor on how to treat the infection, and double-check that the suggested vaginal cream is safe.

I have used yeast infectin creams twice to try and eliminate this onset of infection, but to no avail. I'd like to try the tea tree oil home remedy above, but I am concerned for two reasons 1. I am 2 months pregnant 2. I have had this onset reoccur since late October. After reading an articule of yeast infections, and the ultimate damage it can cause such as gastro problems, and the spread of the infection into other parts of the body, should I be more worried not haven got rid of it? Can I or should I try the tea tree oil remedy? My gyno told me I can use a vaginal cream, but being pregnant, I'd rather use a more natural means. Please advise.
