Signs and Symptoms of Constipation

Constipation is the term given to a condition in which bowel movements happen less frequently than is normal for a particular individual, or the stool is small, hard, and difficult or painful to pass.

In addition to infrequent bowel movements, other symptoms of constipation include bad breath, loss of appetite, headaches and dizziness, constant fullness in the abdomen and pain in the lower back, and diarrhea alternating with constipation.

Constipation is often the main cause for many other illnesses and diseases in humans, since the waste products from our bodily functions are retained for longer than what nature intended. As a result, toxins are absorbed back into the system, leading to a number of ailments.

Causes of Constipation

One of the primary causes of constipation is a bad diet. For example, consuming foods which are low in essential vitamins and minerals, not drinking enough water during the day, and drinking excessive amounts of coffee or tea commonly leads to improper bowel movements.

As we age, our bodies produce less and start to lag behind in the manufacture of digestive acids such as hydrochloric acid, pepsin, and digestive enzymes. This natural slow-down is also a leading cause of constipation. A proper diet and regular exercise can help reduce the chances of chronic constipation.

Home Remedies and Natural Treatments for Constipation

Constipation Home Remedy Using Apple Cider Vinegar

Apple Cider Vinegar assists our body in performing natural bowel movements since it contains significant amounts of pectin, which is a water soluble fiber that helps to improve digestion by normalizing the acid levels in the stomach.

For an effective treatment of constipation, add 2 tablespoons of Apple Cider Vinegar into an 8 oz glass of water, and drink this mixture three times a day. The Apple Cider Vinegar can also be mixed with apple juice or grape juice to make it more palatable.

Treat Constipation with Psyllium

Psyllium is a wonderful treatment for constipation, which is why it is a common ingredient in many over the counter laxatives. Therefore, a simple remedy is to take 1 teaspoon of psyllium mixed into a glass of juice three times a day until your constipation is relieved. Be sure to drink the mixture immediately to prevent it from thickening, since it may become more difficult to swallow. Also, drink plenty of water throughout the day when using this remedy.

What is the best stool softener?

  2. For constipation, I have been using renew life cleansemore for years. I had to drive myself to the emergency room 15 years ago. I was going to explode.but these have been my life saver since. They have them at Walgreens on sale now for $17,usually $24. I tried everything, this is the only thing that ever helped me. They contain magnesium, slippery elm, and other things. I would be dead without these!! You should definitely try these.

Great article for people suffering from constipation problem. Drinking water with freshly squeezed lemon first thing in the morning and eating steamed yams for breakfast will enable you to have great bowel movements.

  4. Use 8 oz. at room temperature water with a TBSP of organic apple cider vinegar with the honey.

  5. I have a lot of information on this topic as I read and try things. Coconut oil heals the body from teeth to the rectum of bacteria, microbes, fungus, and viral issues. Activated charcoal at night while you sleep sucks up toxins in the gut and does amazing things. Kefir in the morning and during the day restores the flora. Start with a small amount and work up to a cup a day. Magnesium is for muscles and the intestine is a large muscular tube. Msm cleans up the whole body and helps with collagen, take it with vitamin C. If you have stress and go into fight or flight mode in your emotions, your body shuts down the processing of food. Take a stool softener for that period of time to keep the intestines moving. Drink plenty of water. Also try 8 oz. apple cider vinegar with the mother in water at room temperature with one tsp of honey for taste. Soy lecithin granules emulsify bad fats of our bodies. L- Taurine removes MSG from our bodies. Iodine displaces flouride, bromide, and chloride. Stay healthy. Blessings! Kay

My daughter suffered from constipation when she was 5, but once I started giving her Mamil, she’s feeling better. Now she no longer suffers from constipation. It contains no sugar and contains high levels of DHA. Also, it helps with softer stools and increases the growth of good bacteria.

For constipation in younger kids, you can try out Mamil caraumun kid’s formula milk. It worked wonders for my kids. I suggest you request free sample from the company first as a trial before purchasing it. I’m sure you will see the results within a week. Just email to the company and ask for free samples to start and they’ll mail them to you. Good luck!

Hi, my dear son is going to be 2 years old soon and for the past 1 year, he has been having constipation (and the problem seems to be worsening in recent months). He can easily pass 3 to 4 days without any bowel movement. Even though he tries, he finds it very difficult to get the stool out. When he finally passes it, he cries because the stool is too hard and big.
In fact, I’m giving him a lot of fiber already! I really don’t know why he’s always constipated.
Any advice is greatly appreciated. Thanks in advance!

  17. Thanks for the help!

I was recommended a natural, FDA aproved constipation treatment called Life Clean AOW. It involves a colon hydrotherapy using purified water. Pay attention – it is not the regular enema you might think -because a simple enema only cleanses the lower area of the intestine. Hydrocolon cleans the entire colon.

  20. Thanks for all these good remedies!

Don’t forget to drink plenty of water when using psyllium, or it will make things worse. I recommend at least 2 glasses.
For baby constipation, I would recommend this article:

Found some pretty good advice there.

There are just as many home remedies as there are causes of constipation. One of the best that I have found for infant constipation is using Dark Karo syrup. It is safe, inexpensive and very effective. Take a look at http://www.newbornconstipation.org for dosing and more information.

@Hellboys – constipation as a health condition is the same for adults and babies. However, the treatment you choose would be different. Babies cannot handle the same medication or remedies as adults. Therefore, you should never give adult’s meds to babies. Always consult an herbalist or doctor first when it comes to kids.

You might need a stool softener, not a laxative. I had an oral surgery and was prescribed amoxicillin (antibiotic) and endocet (pain reliever containing acetaminophen and oxycodone). In the patient prescription information for endocet, it lists constipation as a possible side effect, and goes on to say “To prevent constipation, eat a diet adequate in fiber, drink plenty of water, and exercise.” I had not had any side effects from medication before that I can remember, and unfortunately, I did not read all of this prior to using this medication. After the surgery I became severely constipated.
I had not eaten anything for several days, so when my bowl movements stopped I did not notice. Rarely in my life have I been constipated. Once I started eating again, I became uncomfortable within a few days and realized that I was constipated. I tried prune juice, laxatives such as Ex-Lax, Phillips Milk of Magnesia, SenokotXtra, and a self-administered rectal suppository. Nothing worked. Days were going by and I was becoming extremely uncomfortable and was very close to going to the emergency room for a rectal water enema. I decided to call my doctor (general practitioner) first to ask his advice, but he was on vacation so I spoke to another doctor in the office. I related the story above. Although I was seeking advice on what over the counter medication I should take, I was advised instead to go to the emergency room and have an x-ray because I might have a tumor. Of course, I thought that was ridiculous. I did not suddenly develop a tumor. Although I had not read it, it seemed to me my problem was the result of taking pills for several days while not eating much of anything. Then I called a pharmacist, who then recommended medications that I had already taken. No new ideas there either. Finally I called the oral surgeon who operated on me. This seemed at the time to be an odd question for him, but I was getting desperate.
He immediately said I needed a stool softener and recommended Colace. He said such problems were common in hospitals and this is what patients were often given. I bought it, took it, went for a long walk around the neighborhood and periodically walked around the perimeter of the backyard for 15 minutes at a time, and in 12-18 hours began to have relief. The stool came out in hard compact clay-like nuggets. It was difficult and a bit painful to pass and I squatted in the shower to do it, but once the process started I experienced relief in increments over the next 12 hours.

Is baby and adult constipation the same?

  27. Edward38king

    Thanks for the information!

With all this going on, you have not taken her to a VET yet? The mass could be a fatty tumor which labs can detect and it could be much worst. Please, for the dogs sake, take her to a VET. If she is whimpering she is in pain.

  29. You need to take magnesium (citrate or aspartate or whatever else is more bio-available) in capsule form, not pill as they are difficult to digest, especially for those who have gastrointestinal problems, and they are among the people who need it most. Start with a dosage of 400 mg and gradually increase the dose until you get loose bowel movements and then back off a little. This should help!

where do you get the fiber cleanse? I’m trying to avoid going to emergency for an enema. Thanks!

Hope someone can help me out there somewhere! My dog has had bad gas for a week now and she has been having some diarrhea, but now she has been constipated for a couple of days now! She has a mass as big as a baseball on her stomach on her backside. Tonight she has started whimpering off and on. I know I’m going to have to take her to a vet but does anybody have any answers? Thanks worried mother of my ten year old lab mix Clarabelle!

Two spoons of castor oil with a glass of fruit juice is one of the fastest effective home remedy for constipation.

Eating a spoon of almond oil mixed in hot milk will help. Take it daily at bedtime for releasing stool in just 1 week.

  34. I’ve been reading comments about apple cider vinegar and I just want to let you know that you must drink the right ACV. I personally prefer Bragg brand and you have to make sure that it is organic with the mother, not just the plain clear apple cider vinegar that you get in grocery stores. ACV cocktail is delicious.

  35. My sister suffered severe constipation for over 2 years, and so did I. After several procedures, two emergency room trips, and many medications, the doctors said there was nothing else they could do for her — except, of course, continue the medications (that were not working). Finally, I convinced her to take 2 caps, 3x/day of the Lady Soma Fiber Cleanse. Since she started 6 months ago, she has never been more regular. No problems – and she’s happier. It will definitely help you also cause your symptoms sounds just like mine. = )

Have to do enema to rid colon of waste everyday. I have tried everything and more to try to have normal BMs to no avail. Planning on trying the acv . Hope it works.

  37. @Liz, I feel bad for you for what you went through. I don’t like the taste of ACV either. I can only drink it well diluted in really chilled water. For constipation, somebody told me to take a half teaspoon of castor oil mixed in any thing you like twice a day (once in the morning and one in early evening). It works mixed in warm milk really fast and within an hour you feel the urge to go. You should not take more than one teaspoon of Castor oil in one dose. It always works for me.

  38. tried 2 tbls of acv for constipation and made me sick to my stomach, burping up the fluid, so grouse and I am so nauseated and still no BM, so frick’n frustrating.

  40. Dr. Christophers Fen B or lower bowel formula is the best for constipation that I have found.. Fenegreek seeds good, Apple cider vinegar. ALSO, found I had LOW Stomach Acid (which looks like high acid), so I take betaine at meals with proteins, to break down for me. Look up malabsorption, but get tested by natropathic md for low acid and make sure that is issue. There are good HCL(hydochloric acid) remedies that are natural. Ginger after foods also helped constipation. I sip on fenegreek water during day. Hope this helps someone.

Peter Gillham’s Natural Calm cannot be beat for taking care of constipation. I had rectal surgery & was warned I could never get constipated again or the nerves & muscles in my rectum would be damaged & require surgery all over again. I learned about Natural Calm & have used it ever since. It’s completely natural with zero side effects. Apple cider vinegar is something I’ve been trying recently as well & have found that it also helps with going to the bathroom when taken nightly before bed. One or both of these combined will get you going to the bathroom again without painful cramps or the discomfort one gets from strong laxatives which are unhealthy anyway.

I am more than 55 yrs. But my passing of stools is not what it should be at this age. Only scanty stools that too like the babies pass stools and faceus is only little. That tantamounts to heart irritation and giddiness. At times ushers to mild heart attack. what should be remedy?
