Castor Oil Health Benefits

What is Castor Oil?

Castor Oil is a very pale yellow liquid that is extracted from castor seeds (Ricinus Communis). 1It is an anti-inflammatory and anti-oxidant oil which has been used for centuries for its therapeutic and medicinal benefits. It is believed that most of castor oil’s benefits are derived from its high concentration of unsaturated fatty acids. Although it has a strong and rather unpleasant taste, castor oil is used in cosmetics, soaps, textiles, medicines, massage oils and many other everyday products.

What are the Benefits of Castor Oil?

Castor Oil has been used both internally and externally for thousands of years due to its many wonderful health benefits. Since it can strengthen the immune system, castor oil is considered a great remedy to treat the following major illnesses and ailments:

  • Multiple Sclerosis
  • Parkinson’s Disease
  • Cerebral Palsy
  • Hair loss
  • Pain from Arthritis and Rheumatism

It has also been found to help with many everyday problems such as:

  • Yeast Infections
  • Constipation
  • Gastrointestinal Problems
  • Menstrual Disorders
  • Migraines
  • Acne
  • Sunburn
  • Athlete’s Foot
  • Ringworm
  • Skin Abrasions
  • Inflammation

Castor Oil is also commonly used to induce labour, so pregnant women should always consult a doctor before using it.

Uses of Castor Oil

Arthritis Natural Remedy

The anti-inflammatory properties of Castor Oil make it an excellent massage oil for relieving arthritic joints, nerve inflammations, and sore muscles. Castor oil pack has shown to be very effective for joint, and muscle pain.

  • Make a small pad by folding a small piece of unbleached cotton flannelette into 3 or 4 layers.
  • Dip the cotton pad into Castor Oil and place it on to the affected joint or muscle.
  • Cover the pad with a plastic wrap.
  • Place a hot water bottle or heating pad over the plastic wrapped cotton pad. The plastic wrap will prevent the water bottle or heating pad from getting oily.
  • Leave the cotton pad on for 45 minutes to an hour, once per day.

This Castor Oil pack can be reused. Simply place it into a plastic ziplock bag and refrigerate it until it is ready to be used again. It can be refrigerated in a ziplock bag.

Castor Oil for Backache Relief

Research indicates that castor oil is useful in cases of Lumbago (lower back pain) and Sciatica (Marwat et al., 2017). Its primary component, ricinoleic acid, has well-established anti-inflammatory and pain-relieving properties (Nisbett et al., 2024). Clinical trials have also demonstrated that castor oil can be as effective as pharmaceutical options like Diclofenac Sodium for managing inflammatory joint pain, but with fewer adverse effects (Medhi et al., 2009). In this randomized clinical trial, researchers compared castor oil to Diclofenac Sodium (a common pharmaceutical anti-inflammatory) for managing chronic inflammatory pain. The study found that castor oil was just as effective as the drug at reducing pain and stiffness, but with significantly fewer side effects. This makes it a powerful, natural alternative for those seeking backache relief without the gastrointestinal risks often associated with traditional NSAIDs. Therefore, consistently applying a Castor Oil Pack to the affected area may serve as an effective remedy for managing chronic inflammatory back pain.

Constipation Remedy

Studies have shown that Castor Oil is a very strong laxative, which makes it very effective against constipation (Alookaran et al., 2024). Therefore, simply take half a teaspoon of castor oil in the morning. You can mix the oil with orange juice, cranberry juice, prune juice, or ginger juice. However, do not take it continuously for more than 2 days. If symptoms persist for longer than 2 days, consult your physician immediately.

Ringworm Treatment

Ringworm is known to be a stubborn condition to treat, but one of the active compounds of Castor Oil (Undecylenic Acid) has been found to be very effective at treating this fungal infection.

  • Spray Castor leaves with some hot water and coarsely crush the leaves.
  • Soak the leaves in pure coconut oil.
  • Warm the leaves to a temperature that will not burn the skin, and apply the leaves over the affected area as a poultice.
  • Leave on the skin for at least one hour, or optionally overnight.
  • You may wrap the leaves with unbleached cotton fabric to prevent the oil from staining your bed sheets.

Repeat the procedure every night before going to bed until cured. However, if you notice any redness or discomfort around the area, discontinue this remedy.

Skin Problems

Successful studies have approved the use of Castor Oil for skin infections and other skin problems such as sunburn, abrasions, acne, dry skin, boils, warts, stretch marks, liver/age spots, athletes foot and chronic itching and inflamed skin.

  • Dip a cotton ball into Castor oil and apply it onto the affected skin in the morning and at night.
  • Alternatively, for larger skin areas, soak an appropriately large piece of unbleached cotton cloth in Castor Oil and wrap the affected area overnight.
  • If the area is very small, soak a Band-Aid in Castor Oil and cover the infected skin overnight.

For stubborn fungal infections that affect the skin or nails, it is recommended to soak the affected skin in Epsom Salt for 10-15 minutes to soften and disinfect the skin before applying Castor Oil. This can help speed up the healing process.

Stye Treatment

Castor oil contains compounds with natural antibacterial and anti-inflammatory properties, which may help manage a stye which is a painful infection of the oil glands in the eyelid.

Using a clean cotton swab, apply a very small drop of high-quality, hexane-free castor oil directly to the stye 2 or 3 times per day. Be careful to avoid getting the oil directly into the eye itself. If the stye persists for more than a few days or affects your vision, consult an eye care professional.

Wrinkle Treatment

Castor oil is a rich, natural emollient that deeply hydrates the skin. By acting as an occlusive barrier, it helps lock in moisture, which can improve skin elasticity and reduce the appearance of fine lines and wrinkles. Regular application can help the skin feel smoother, softer, and more resilient.

Nighttime Treatment: Before bed, dip a clean cotton ball into high-quality, cold-pressed castor oil and apply a thin layer to areas prone to wrinkling.

Eye Area Caution: When applying near the eyes, use only a very small amount. Ensure the oil does not enter the eye, as it can cause temporary blurred vision or irritation.

Castor oil works by improving skin hydration and suppleness, therefore, consistent use is necessary to see a visible “plumping” effect.

Pro-Tip: Castor oil is quite thick. Some people prefer to mix it with a lighter “carrier” oil, like jojoba or almond oil, for easier application and faster absorption.

What are the Side Effects of Castor Oil?

Castor oil is normally safe if used in moderation. However, pregnant and lactating women and people with intestinal blockage, acute inflammatory intestinal disease, appendicitis, or abdominal pain should not take Castor Oil without their doctor’s approval.

Note that precautions must be taken when taking the oil internally, so you should always follow the directions on the package and consult your doctor or naturopathic professional before consuming it. A typical recommended dosage for the oil is no more than one-half to one full teaspoon per day. Overdosage of Castor Oil may result in diarrhea, nausea, vomiting, abdominal pain or cramping.

Where and How to Buy Castor Oil

Castor Oil is best purchased from a health food store. Look for cold-pressed and organic oil only and confirm it with a naturopathic doctor before taking it. The color of the oil should be a very light or pale yellow.

To achieve healthy hair, take a few drops of Castor oil on your fingertips, then run your fingers through the hair and leave it in as long as possible. Wash out with shampoo, rinse and style as usual.

@ Rina, It is safe to use Castor oil topically while you are taking Prozac (Fluoxetine). However, oral consumption of Castor oil or any strong laxative medication along with Prozac (Fluoxetine), especially, if you have low levels of magnesium or potassium, is not recommended. It may cause irregular heart rhythm. Hope it helps!

FLUoxetine can cause an irregular heart rhythm that may be serious and potentially life-threatening, although it is a relatively rare side effect. The risk is increased if you have low blood levels of magnesium or potassium, which can occur with bowel cleansing preparations or excessive use of medications that have a laxative effect.

  6. If I am using Prozac. Will Castor oil have any side effects, if I use it on my skin.

@ Purity, Yes castor oil packs may help you. Castor oil is known for its detoxifying and anti-inflammatory activity. It also helps stimulate the thymus glands and increase the production of T-11 cells in HIV positive people. A study performed by Harvey Grady suggests that “the experimental group (who used castor oil) showed increase in the number of total lymphocytes and T-11 cells at a significant level of P=0.01, which did not occur in the control group.” The study found that castor oil packs increased T-11 cells very slightly for 7 hours after the 2-hour treatment. Another study shows that using Castor oil packs applied over the the thymus gland area for 2 hours for 3 days each week helped HIV positive patients. I hope it helps you too!

  11. Phokane Happy

Castor oil is very helpful. I am using it for various conditions.

  12. @Lori Janine, Castor oil can be applied all over the face to treat dry skin and to improve uneven skin stone or dark spots. For smooth application, mix it in a small amount of coconut or olive oil. You can use it as your regular face moisturizer if you are okay with the smell. I apply it all over my face, feet, elbows and knees every night. It’s a natural emollient.

  13. Lori Janine

Can castor oil be applied to large areas of the face for treatment of uneven skin tone and age spots? Or is it just spot treatment only?

  14. For IBS, try Aloe Vera Juice.

  15. Hi, What kind of Castor oil do you use?

  16. Rimsha

@Mary, I would definitely wash and dry the fabric before soaking it into the Castor oil. For Castor oil pack, you don’t put the fabric in the ziplock bag. You need to place the Castor oil soaked fabric/pack onto the affected arm directly and it should make a direct contact with the affected area. And then it should be wrapped with plastic wrap over it so it doesn’t stain your clothes or bedding and can stay on the skin and doesn’t slide off. DO NOT put it in the ziplock bag before putting it on your arm.

  17. Blarny

Riaana – If you are trying to get pregnant, avoid using Castor oil. Because it is used to speed up the labour. So if taken during pregnancy, castor oil may cause miscarriage.

  18. Riaana

Can I use Castor oil if I want to be pregnant?

  19. Diane

@Ingrid – The symptoms sound so much like IBS. Although I believe that castor oil may have helped her, she should still go to a doctor and remove certain foods from her diet. The castor oil is perhaps masking the problem but the damage could still be happening inside. If she does have IBS (which does not show up on x-rays, etc.), she will need to stop eating a number of foods that cause the stomach to blow up. Castor oil could be part of a good health program but unless the doctors ruled it out – can’t imagine how the castor oil packs helped. The symptoms sound exactly like IBS which millions of people suffer from.

  20. Jezele

Castor oil is a miracle when I put it on my dry skin. I had itchy skin on my chin area for the past three years and it’s better now. Also it helps with hair-loss. After using Castor oil on my head, my hair doesn’t fall out anymore.

  21. Carlie

To Senga Baird – yes Castor oil helps with hair growth. It’s good for thin lashes, thin brows or thin hair.

  22. Dumb question, but for Castor oil pack, should I rinse the wool flannel before placing it in ziplock bag? I’m using it on my arm for joint pain. Is it normal to hurt more after using it? Thanks.

  23. Senga Baird

Will Castor oil help my eyebrows grow back in?

I suggested to my friend to put the castor oil packs on her tummy for abdominal pain and better health. She suffered from an abdominal pain for over 10 years and every time she ate, her stomach would blow like a balloon and she would have pain for several hours. I can’t believe she had this pain for so many years. She went to a doctor and they did an MRI and didn’t find anything abnormal but was prescribed some antibiotics. It didn’t help. But after the 1st day of using the Castor Oil pack, her pain was gone along with the bloating of her tummy, she thanks me so much and can’t believe something so simple took her pain away. Now she does the Castor oil pack once per month.

  25. For sun burns, Tea Tree Oil works great or as an emergency remedy, yogurt or sour cream works too. Put yogurt or sour cream in the freezer and take out before it freezes and put it on the affected skin, then shower and repeat. This heals the worst sun burns the fastest and in a most natural way. Good luck!

I plan to using Castor Oil for chronic constipation. Fruits and vegetables with stool softener do not work for me. I had colonoscopy done and everything was good. I hope Castor oil works for me. So I don’t have to keep relying on suppositories. Any thoughts? My MD doesn’t want to comment.

  29. @ Susan, I’m not sure if Castor oil can help with Stroke symptoms but its anti-inflammatory and emollient activity may help soothe and soften the skin. It is an amazing oil!

  30. Steph

Ellicec, Yes, Castor Oil can help with Dandruff. Here’s a popular remedy we use in our family – take 1 tbsp of castor oil and mix it with one tbsp of olive oil and add juice from half a lemon. Apply this mix into the scalp and all over the roots. Leave it in for at least half hour – you may keep it in longer if you like. And apply 1 tbsp of more olive oil before washing it (it reduces the stickiness of Castor oil and makes washing it out easier). Hope it helps!

Castor oil is extremely effective for breaking down of lumps in the body as well as for the promotion of mobility of stiff or paralyzed body parts. In your case, I recommend that you practice hydrotherapy rather than using castor oil. It is applying/soaking 3 minutes of hot water and 30 seconds of cold water for 3 rounds along with the consumption of cayenne pepper. This should increase blood circulation that may have resulted in the numbness of your body. In addition, I recommend a simple natural diet to allow your body to heal.

l will inter-plant it in my coffee farm to repel pests and will be using the oil as a pesticide. In fact your above info would help me a lot in my organic farming endeavours.

Although I read that caster oil is good for lymph nodes through applications rubs externally and internally. I caution you that it is a minor temporary fix. People with Sarcoidosis need to seek a physician because nothing will stop it from hurting except for steroids or inflammatory medications. Caster oil has very good medicinal contribution but it will not solve your painful swollen neck glands. Please seek medical attention for resolution and treatment. Go seek ear/nose/throat (ENT) doctor!

I dip a Q-tip into the bottle of castor oil and then apply it to my roots and scalp. This way, it’s applied directly to my scalp instead of my hair.

Is Castor oil good for numbness, inflammation, muscle pains? Please I need help after I had a stroke?

  44. Mom of 5

From what I’ve read you can apply castor oil directly to any bald spots or patches, massage it in for about 6 minutes every day. You can also add a teaspoon of it to your leave in conditioner and shake it up a bit to mix it well and use after shampooing. You can also make your own conditioner using castor oil in place of your current conditioner. Use 2 tsp of castor oil, 1 egg-white and 1 tsp glycerin, mix them together, massage into wet hair, (and scalp if you have dandruff or suffering from hair loss or are just trying to grow your hair) and leave it in a few minutes then rinse using not too hot water.
