What is Chamomile?

Chamomile Chamomile is an herb derived from the flowering plants of the daisy family (Asteraceae). For centuries, both fresh and dried chamomile flowers have been used to brew teas and create natural remedies for a variety of health conditions. One of the key active ingredients in chamomile essential oil is bisabolol, which is highly valued for its anti-irritant, anti-inflammatory, and anti-microbial properties. Additionally, chamomile contains chamazulene, a powerful compound formed during the steam distillation process that further enhances its ability to soothe the skin and reduce swelling.

What are the Benefits of Chamomile?

Chamomile can be used topically or orally to treat a number of everyday ailments, such as:

  • Insomnia and other sleep disorders
  • Anxiety and Panic Attacks
  • Muscle twitches
  • Wounds, burns, and scrapes
  • Skin conditions such as psoriasis, eczema, chickenpox, and diaper rash
  • Stomach problems such as menstrual cramps, stomach flu, and ulcers

Uses of Chamomile

Home Remedy for Stomach Cramps

Chamomile has been found to contain fairly strong antispasmodic and anti-inflammatory constituents. Therefore, it has been found to be effective in treating stomach and intestinal cramps. Simply prepare a cup of Chamomile tea following the directions on the package and drink it once or twice daily. If the symptoms continue for more than 2 days, consult your physician as soon as possible.

Home Remedy for Insomnia

Chamomile is an effective remedy for sleep disorders such as insomnia. Simply make a chamomile tea about 30 minutes before going to bed for a restful sleep .

Home Remedy for Irritable Bowel Syndrome (IBS)

Chamomile reduces cramping and pain in the bowels and also helps to relieve excessive gas and bloating in the intestines. Therefore, a simple remedy is to drink a cup of chamomile tea to help relieve irritable bowel syndrome, nausea, and gastroenteritis or stomach flu.

Home Remedy for Migraine Headaches

Studies suggest Chamomile is a wonderful cure for migraines. Take a cup of tea when you start noticing the symptoms of a migraine headache. It works best if you take it before the headache actually gets severe.

Home Remedy for Premenstrual Syndrome (PMS) and Menstrual Cramps

Drinking chamomile tea has been found to be beneficial in treating PMS and Menstrual Cramps.

Psoriasis

Chamomile has long been used as a traditional remedy for psoriasis, and emerging research suggests it may offer supportive benefits. A randomized, double-blind clinical trial of a chamomile-based topical formulation showed reductions in plaque severity in patients with mild to moderate psoriasis. Experimental studies also indicate that Matricaria chamomilla has anti-inflammatory and antimicrobial properties, which may help soothe irritated skin and reduce inflammation associated with psoriatic plaques. While chamomile is not a replacement for medical treatment, it may be used as a complementary approach for symptom relief.

Chamomile tea can be prepared by steeping three teaspoons of dried flowers in one cup of boiling water for 15 minutes and consumed up to three times daily. For localized psoriasis on the face or neck, gentle steam inhalation may also be used with caution to avoid burns.

A chamomile tea bath may further help calm the skin. Steep four to five chamomile tea bags in four cups of boiling water for 15 minutes, then add the tea to a warm bath and soak for 15–20 minutes.

A patch test is recommended before topical use, especially for individuals with allergies to plants in the daisy family. Chamomile therapies should be considered complementary to, not a substitute for, prescribed medical treatments.

Using Chamomile to Treat Burns and Scrapes

Chamomile oil is very useful in treating bad burns. Simple rub a small amount of oil gently across the burned area once a day. For scrapes and burns you can also brew a strong concoction by adding 3 tea bags to one cup of boiling water. When the water cools, dip a cloth into it and use it as a compress on the wounded area.

Lightening Skin Using Chamomile

Chamomile has been found to be advantageous for lightening your skin tone. Simply bring two quarts of water to a boil with 2 chamomile tea bags in it. Then place your face above the steaming pot of chamomile tea. A bath in water mixed with chamomile tea works too.

Reducing Dark Circles Around Eyes

Chamomile tea has been found to help relieve eye fatigue and dark circles. A simple remedy is to dip 2 chamomile tea bags in warm water. After 5 minutes, remove the tea bags from the water and let them cool to room temperature. Then place them on your eyes at night as a compress.

What are the Side Effects of Chamomile?

As with all herbal products, moderation is the key to avoiding adverse reactions. Some of the potential side effects of chamomile include drowsiness, so use it with caution if you are driving or operating machinery. High doses of chamomile can also cause vomiting and/or skin reactions in some individuals. If you are allergic to ragweed pollen or have hayfever, you may have difficulty using chamomile.

Using chamomile during pregnancy is not recommended, since it is considered to be an abortifacient (a substance that induces abortion). Chamomile is also not recommended if you are currently taking blood thinners, since chamomile contains a substance called coumarin (which is also a blood thinner).

Where and How to Buy Chamomile

Chamomile can be bought as dried flower heads, an infusion (tea), liquid extract, essential oil, tinctures (concentrated in alcohol), and in creams and ointments. Tea bags are the most common form and can be found at many mainstream grocery stores and pharmacies.

I recently started drinking Chamomile tea for anxiety and heart palpitations. To my surprise, it immediately calmed down my heart and made me pleasantly drowsy. I also took my blood pressure and pulse before and after drinking the tea. My blood pressure dropped to a normal reading and my heartbeat slowed too. Nothing else has worked so well for me.

  3. You don’t have to dry out the Chamomile flowers to make the tea. I just fill about 1/3 cup with the flowers and pour boiling water over them. Let it sit for 10 minutes – strain it and drink.

  4. Chamomile tea acts like a sleeping pill for me. One cup and it is lights out in about 15 minutes. the plant grows so easy, it actually becomes a weed. I grew some last year and didn’t bother planting any this year. To my surprise it comes out everywhere in the garden. It had re-seeded itself and popped up between the tomatoes, dill and squash.

  5. I get anxiety attacks which are getting worse. I just tried a cup of Chamomile tea and my nervous stomach has started to settle. I can now think a bit. I will have another before bed instead of taking prescribed meds for anxiety. Will see how it works. I never liked the taste of the tea, but I may have to get used to it if it really helps.

Is Chamomile tea okay to give to a 14 month old baby? As she hasn’t slept through one single night since she is born. Thanks!

  8. Teaman

If you can not find Chamomile as a tea, possibly, looking for the flower in dried form or by seed may work. You can always grow the flowers yourself using seeds. And simply dry the extra flowers and use them whenever you wish. Just a suggestion.

Chamomile certainly helps me sleep, if you are very worried about it keeping you awake for even longer just get the caffeine free and don’t sweeten it. I drink it about thirty minutes before I go to sleep, and I sleep like I baby where as I had problems sleeping through the night before.

  22. Rhonda

I have bad case of insomnia and I haven’t been able to sleep. Does Chamomile really help you sleep or fall asleep?

  23. Dear Lorrie Wall, I am suffering from anxiety too. I have been drinking chamomile tea 6 grams in the morning and another 6 grams before going to bed. I read that it helps relieve anxiety. I have also been taking Lexapro 20mg since 40 days. If you are suffering from this disorder, I am so sorry. Anxiety hit me just once after 17 days of taking Lexapro. Now I am feeling good. I don’t think it will ever get back to me. I am drinking raw vegetable juices, eating brown rice, drinking organic milk. I have completely put a full stop to fruits as they contain a lot of sugar, which is bad for this disorder. I drink decaf coffee and walk an hour a day!! Please take care. Don’t suffer from this illness. My heart goes out to you. Don’t forget to exercise. I don’t know if chamomile tea is making me gain weight, or it’s Lexapro. I think I am gaining weight.

  24. Gilbert

  30. Dana Reyna

Growing up my mother and grandparents always used Chamomile tea when one of us would have pink eye. I used it on my kids and now on my grandkids. All you do is boil water in a cup and add either the tea bag or the actual Chamomile that comes in a little bag at a supermarket in the seasoning section. Boil filtered water and make the tea with about a quarter to one half a cup of water to one tea bag or one heaped teaspoon of tea. Let it brew for about five minutes. Take out the tea and let it cool down to room temperature. Wash your hands and dry thoroughly. Dip a cotton pad (organic cotton ones) into it. Squeeze a little tea out and wipe from inner eye to outer eye in one sweep. Discard pad. Wash hands again and use a new cotton wipe for the next eye. Repeat every couple of hours throughout the day. It works great!

Flax seeds is the remedy for ovarian cyst.

  34. Sophi

Probably Chamomile for pregnant women is not a good idea, taken from the article itself, “Using chamomile during pregnancy is not recommended, since it is considered to be an abortifacient (a substance that induces abortion).”

  35. Karen Agnew

The article just said that it induces abortion so pregnant women should not be taking chamomile. If I were you I would clear it with my doctor first.

  36. Aggie

I’m no expert, but it says under side effects of Chamomile tea that taking chamomile while pregnant is not recommended.

  37. Susklahavana

You should not take Chamomile if you are pregnant! Talk to your doctor before you take anything, no matter how insignificant it may seem! And yes, I experienced difficulty sleeping during two pregnancies. My doctor prescribed Melatonin, but I recommend you talk with yours before trying it.

  38. Rennet

@Jeramie, Chamomile is not safe for pregnant women. It can trigger labour, therefore you should not drink Chamomile tea during pregnancy. Drinking warm milk or using Lavender incense in the room before going to bed helps sleep better. I hope it helps!

  39. Jeramie

I’m pregnant and I couldn’t sleep every night so I’m taking Chamomile. Is that normal for pregnant women?
