What is Grape Seed Oil?

Grape Seed Extract and its oil is derived from the seeds of a grape. Due to their nutritional and medicinal properties grapes, their seeds, and leaves have been used in many home remedies for centuries. Grape Seed Oil is a great source of polyphenols – flavonoids, Essential Fatty Acid – linoleic acid, vitamin E, and oligomeric proanthocyanidin. These great components make grape seed oil an asset in the treatment of many minor to severe health conditions. It has also been used in the production of massage oils and balms, hair and hygienic products, face and body moisturizers, as well as in sunblocks and sunburn ointments. Even though, Grape Seed Oil and its Extract are derived from Grape Seeds, they have different uses due to the different concentration levels of their components.

What are the Benefits of Grape Seed Oil?

Grape seed oil

Studies suggest that Grape Seeds constitute anti-inflammatory, anti-oxidant, anti-histamine, anti-aging, anti-allergic, antimicrobial, and adaptogenic activity. Therefore, its oil and extract has been beneficial in the treatment of a number of health issues which include: arthritis, edema, dermatitis, acne, wrinkles, dry and itchy skin, age spots, sun burns, chapped lips, wounds, bruising, stretch marks, varicose veins, hemorrhoids, chronic venous insufficiency, premature aging, premenstrual syndrome (PMS), weight loss, stress, dandruff, hair loss, warts, cardiovascular diseases especially atherosclerosis, hypertension, high cholesterol levels, diabetes, visual impairment, cataract, and macular degeneration. Studies also suggest that its free radical scavenging activity may strengthen the immune system and reduce the risk of developing cancer.

Uses of Grape Seed Oil and its Extract

Acne and Dermatitis

Research suggests that the linoleic acid in Grape Seed Oil has anti-inflammatory, anti-allergen, acne reductive, and moisture retentive properties. It contains 73% of linoleic acid which may be beneficial in the treatment of acne, dermatitis, allergic reactions, atopic eczema and dry and itchy skin. A simple remedy for these skin conditions is to apply Grape Seed Oil onto the affected skin 2-3 times daily. Regular oral intake of Grape Seed Extract supplements can also add to the benefits.

Age Spots and Sun Burn

The rich nutrients in Grape Seed extract have been found to protect against UV radiation, and they have been found to lighten the effects on age spots and pigmented skin caused by ultra violet rays. Therefore, simply taking Grapeseed supplements daily may heal and minimize the risk of sunburn and reduce the appearance of age spots. Applying a small amount of Grape Seed Oil onto exposed skin before going in the sun can protect the skin from sunburns.

Cancer Prevention

A few studies suggest that regular oral intake of Grape Seed Extract may suppress the development of different types of cancers and may induce apoptosis – a process that triggers the self-destruction and elimination of damaged and superfluous cells in many cellular systems. Therefore, taking one Grapeseed capsule two to three times daily may be helpful as a preventive measure for people who are at a high risk of the disease. It may also help with liver damage and other side effects caused by chemotherapy medication.

Diabetes

A number of intensive studies have shown that oral intake of linoleic acid can reduce the complications associated with Diabetes. Therefore, regular consumption of Grape Seed Extract, which is rich in linoleic acid and other antiglycemic components, may help with diabetes and visual impairment in diabetics. A recommendation is to take one Grapeseed capsule twice daily.

Hemorrhoids

Varicose veins, spider veins and hemorrhoids are caused by damaged blood vessels and compromise the ability of the capillaries to manage blood flow in the veins, which results in pooling of the blood inside the veins. Grapeseed extract contains oligomeric proanthocyanidin and flavonoids, which are known to help with capillary integrity. Therefore, taking one Grape Seed Extract capsule twice daily may be beneficial for damaged vessels, impaired capillary valves and poor blood circulation that cause hemorrhoids and varicose veins.

High Blood Pressure

Recent research has shown that Grape Seed may improve damaged blood vessels and help regulate high blood pressure and high cholesterol levels. Therefore, taking one capsule of Grapeseed Extract daily may help improve cardiovascular health.

Rheumatoid Arthritis

Studies have shown that Grape Seed Oil may improve the production of collagen which is important for maintaining healthy connective tissues in our joints. Its anti-inflammatory activity may also reduce the pain caused by arthritis. A simple remedy is to start taking 1 teaspoon of Grape Seed Oil daily on an empty stomach for 7 days and then reduce the amount to 1/2 teaspoon daily on an empty stomach.

Wrinkles and Stretch Marks

Studies have shown that the antioxidant activity of Grape Seed Extract may reduce the damage to skin cells and enhance the production of collagen and elastin which is important for strong and healthy looking skin. Therefore taking Grapeseed supplements daily may help reduce the appearance of wrinkles, stretch marks, and saggy skin. A suggested remedy is to also apply Grapeseed Oil onto the affected skin daily overnight. Alternatively, one to two drops of Grape Seed Oil can be added to your face moisturizer to enhance its effectiveness.

What are the Side Effects of Grape Seed Oil and its Extract?

There are not any reported side effects or drug interactions with Grape Seed Extract when taken in moderation. The FDA has issued the GRAS (Generally Recognized As Safe) certification for Grape Seed Extract. However, an overdose of Grape Seed Extract may cause headache, nausea, dizziness and abdominal pain. As with any dietary oil, do not take more than the recommended dose of Grape Seed Oil because it may lead to diarrhea and soft stools. Do not take Grape Seed products if you are allergic to grapes. Additionally, if you are being treated for heart conditions, or are taking any cholesterol or blood pressure lowering medications or blood thinners, consult your doctor and regulate your cholesterol and blood pressure levels when using Grape Seed Oil or its Extract for therapeutic purposes. Grape Seed Oil is not recommended for cooking since it has a high concentration of polyunsaturated fats. Oils with high polyunsaturated fats tend to quickly undergo oxidation when exposed to heat, which can cause the oil to become rancid.

Where and How to Buy Grape Seed Oil and its Extract

Grape Seed Extract is available at most herbal food and drug stores. It can be purchased in the form of capsules, tablets, and powder. When buying Grape Seed Oil, look for cold-pressed organic oil since it retains most of the natural beneficial ingredients compared to the chemically pressed oils.

I have an Allergic Rhinitis and I have already tried two types of sprays but they did not work. I am taking Montelukast (Levocetirizine) and grape seed oil capsule for only two weeks and I’m feeling alright now and my allergy is beginning to improve. I hope that it will continue to improve and my allergy will be controlled soon.

My brother is a vegan and he cooks with only grape seed oil, you don’t need a lot of this oil. He makes salad dressing with Grape Seed Oil and adds herbs to it. He told me it doesn’t change the taste of your food. It just has a lot of health benefits.

  6. Carol

@ Mar, Even though FDA has approved Grape seed oil as “Generally Recognized as Safe” but still, since you are taking a lot of meds, I wouldn’t take Grape seed oil. But if you really want to try it, how about start with a very small amount of the oil and monitor your health closely. If you notice any side effects stop using it. I hope it doesn’t cause any. Please keep us posted about your experience. Good luck!

I have been using grapeseed oil for only a week. I have noticed a big difference in my face and body skin. My skin is so soft, and my face is clearing up. Yes, my face is still breaking out at 42. In only a week grape seed oil did this magic!!!!! People think they have to spend top dollar for better skin. I have but will not be spending any more. Thank You Lord for grapes!

  10. Yes, grape seed oil is safe to put on your skin. If you are on blood thinners, you should have your pt and ptt checked on a regular basis, especially if you are making dietary changes. Garlic, flax seed, flax seed oil can all thin the blood.

You don’t want to take any oil products with any medication or supplement. The oils could block the absorption. For my RLS (restless legs syndrome), I take the amino acid L-Tyrosine and it helps.

  24. Manpreet kaur

Where and how to buy grapeseed oil? Please help me!

  25. What is the difference between grape seed and grape seed extract ?

  26. Randy

It’s fine to use it during the day but any oils work better at night because your skin recovers and reverses the damage better. It has UV protection and therefore is great throughout the day. Try using a carrier oil such as rosehip oil which is also packed with vitamins, essential fatty acids and anti-aging agents. Certain oils can’t be mixed together but rosehip and grape seed oils can be mixed together for a good anti-aging, sun protection, and acne control moisturizer.

  27. You can use it anytime. One thing to keep in mind is that oil will detox your skin, so you may have a bit of breakout, especially on the face. Mine did not last long, plus I used Neem oil at night to clear it up. The Grape Seed oil is not greasy and has a silky texture. I apply it to skin right after showering or bathing before drying my skin. It seems to moisturize the skin better that way.
It is also good for the hair. A little bit goes a long way!

For 500mg capsule of grape seed oil, how many times you have to take it if you have arthritis of the neck/shoulder?

  29. When I first heard about the benefits of grape seed oil I was skeptical. However, during the winter in particular my skin becomes so dry that it flakes and itches furiously. I began using the oil about a week ago and I have to tell you, my skin is much softer and less dry than ever. I apply it once a day in the evening after my shower. I use it on my face and body as well. Also, apply a quarter sized amount to your dry hair and then massage it in well to you hair and scalp. I leave it on for about 15 minutes and then shampoo as usual. Makes my hair very shiny and softer than ever. Love this product!

I make my own body oils for my mother and I find them better than the store bought stuff with added ingredients. But I wanted to know that why would applying grape seed oil directly on the skin temporarily turn the skin red? However, It goes away within a few minutes so I don’t think it is due to an allergic reaction.

  31. Dorothy

How come it says to use at night? Would I be able to use it during the day? Since I have dry skin I would like to put it on my face with my moisturizer during the day.

Buy your son a jar of organic coconut oil and have him begin washing his face using the oil cleansing method (google it). Use straight coconut oil or blend in no more than 2 drops Tea Tree Oil, also each time he washes (twice daily). oil dissolves oil and the healthy oils from coconut and grape seed oils will nourish his face as well as DECREASE the amount of pore-clogging oils that foster acne. Also purchase him a supplement called Sea Buckthorn Oil Blend and Omega 7 Blend. As he begins consuming healthy Omega’s, the acne will cease, scars will fade and life becomes good once again.

I take Grape Seed Extract every night orally, before bed and I get so many compliments on how great my skin, hair, and nails look. I also know so many people who have testimonials on the Grape Seed for other ailments. I do not make any Medical claims but I do love the Natural benefits of this supplement and I encourage others to check out what it can do for them.

  34. Annette

I am 54 years old and I get a lot of compliments on my facial skin. People who know me want to know why skin is clear and looks younger. I tell all who ask that I wash my face with an antibacterial soap like Cetaphil then apply organic, cold pressed grapeseed oil on my skin before I go to bed at night. I also use Queen Helen mint julep masque 2× weekly to clean out pores. The masque is great for getting rid of pimples. I used it when I was much younger and had skin problems. You should use grapeseed oil to help your skin look younger and healthier!

  35. Keep in mind that Grape Seed Extract and Grape Seed Oil are two different things and what applies to one doesn’t necessarily apply to the other. The article above is somewhat disinforming people in that the title indicates that the article will be about the benefits of Grape Seed OIL, but yet much of the article talks about Grape Seed EXTRACT instead and many of the benefits you will get from taking Grape Seed EXTRACT you will NOT get from using or taking Grape Seed OIL. They are two different products with different purposes and effects.

My 90 year father used grapeseed oil everyday for everything. He had the nicest skin… no age spots, his skin looked like that of a 30 year old… no wrinkles.
I will definitely give it a try! 🙂

  38. Ms. Mary

Thank you very much. I’m in so much pain and I will get on this first thing in the morning.

  39. @Lorraine: Grapeseed oil is not recommended for children so I wouldn’t give it to my child. Also one teaspoon is a safe dose for adults. Children are delicate so I don’t think they can handle this much amount. You should consult a homeopathic/herbal doctor before giving it to your child.

  40. Lorraine, Grapeseed Oil is known for its anti inflammatory activity. So applying it on the puffy area avoiding the eyes helps. I use a very small amount in a circular motion and leave it on over night. Also make sure that it is organic and cold pressed oil. Hope it helps!

  41. @Jefferson, just look for cold pressed and organic Grapeseed Oil. I don’t think brands matter! Good luck!

@Maricon G. Tingzon – Yes, Grape Seed Oil extract can be consumed orally, following the directions on the package. However, Grape Seed Oil extract sold in department stores might not be organic. It is believed that commercially produced Grape Seed Oil Extract has a potential to be contaminated with toxins such as benzalkonium chloride, parabens, and triclosan. Therefore, it is best to buy organic and pure Grape Seed Oil extract from an organic or herbal food store. Similarly, organic and cold pressed Grape Seed Oil could be a better choice since it retains most of the natural healing components compared to the chemically pressed oil available in supermarket. I would like to know if it is safe to take two different kinds of oils eg. red palm oil and grape seeds oil?

  47. Laraine

I was told that one teaspoon of grape seed oil is good to help a child with ADHD. Is it safe to give it to him from the spoon or mix it with a drink, or is this a bad idea?

  48. Jeanna Srinivasan

To find the cold-pressed organic grape seed oil visit http://www.mywildtree.com/jeanna. This oil comes in multiple flavors!

  49. @ Bonny, Grape Seed Oil is derived from seeds by pressing them. However, grape seed extract is extracted from the seeds through a complicated industrial procedure and contains concentrated vitamins and minerals. Therefore, extracts have different health benefits than the oils. So I’d suggest taking grape seed oil only if the remedy asks for it. 1/2 to 1 teaspoon Grape Seed oil can be consumed on an empty stomach for arthritis. What are you planning to take grape seed oil for?
