Signs and Symptoms of Acid Reflux and Heartburn

Heartburn is a condition in which the liquid content of the stomach backs up (refluxes) into the esophagus. The most common and persistent symptom of Heartburn is a burning sensation centered in the middle of the chest and/or throat, brought on by stomach acid that churns up onto the lining of the esophagus.

Acid Reflux, also known as Gastroesophageal Reflux Disease (GERD), is a condition which has many symptoms that are similar to heartburn. In many cases, people suffering from Acid Reflux typically suffer from persistent heartburn two or more days per week. In the long term, this can be very serious since, over time, the reflux of stomach acid can erode or wear away the delicate esophagus lining. This can then lead to scar tissue, which causes swallowing problems. GERD has also been linked to an increased risk of esophageal cancer. However, some people have Acid Reflux without heartburn. In such cases, symptoms include chest pain, wheezing, coarseness in the throat, breathing problems, a bitter taste in the mouth, dry coughing, interrupted sleep, tightness in the throat, and halitosis or bad breath. Acid reflux can also lead to regurgitation of acid into the mouth, often due to overeating or bending down or going to bed right after a meal.

Causes of Acid Reflux

Just like other health conditions, there is not one specific cause of Acid Reflux and Heartburn. However, a malfunction of a band of muscle tissue called the Lower Esophageal Sphincter (LES) can ultimately lead to many of the problems and symptoms associated with Acid Reflux and Heartburn. The LES is a complex area of smooth muscles and various hormones, which is responsible for the opening and closing of the lower end of the esophagus when we eat and swallow. It normally keeps the stomach contents from regurgitating, but due to certain physical conditions it can weaken and lose its contraction control. If this happens, the LES fails to close up and cannot maintain the pressure barrier between stomach and esophagus. As a result, acid and pepsin from the stomach can back up and cause acidity and heartburn in the esophagus.

The most common causes of Acid Reflux and Heartburn include:

  • stress
  • some antidepressants and sedatives
  • elevated hormone levels during pregnancy
  • eating before going to bed
  • eating large meals
  • slower emptying of the stomach
  • frequently eating greasy, fried, and fatty foods
  • smoking
  • alcohol
  • drinking lots of bubbly (carbonated) beverages such as soda
  • diseases that weaken the esophageal muscle (such as scleroderma, mixed connective tissue disease, or hiatal hernias)

Home Remedies and Natural Treatments

Apple Cider Vinegar

Apple Cider Vinegar is an amazing remedy for Acid Reflux. It may sound bizarre to drink an acid as a cure for an acid problem, but there are good acids and bad acids and Apple Cider Vinegar is among the good ones.

  • Add 1 teaspoon of apple cider vinegar to 1/2 glass of water.
  • Sip this glass of water while eating your dinner.

Ginger Root

Ginger Root is an amazing natural herb that is known to absorb stomach acid and have the secondary effect of calming the nerves. For an effective natural remedy from the symptoms of acid reflux, try the following:

  • Purchase ginger root capsules from a natural health food or nutritional store.
  • Regularly take one capsule immediately after dinner.

Fennel Seeds

Fennel seed is an aromatic but powerful herb that helps in digestive conditions and has many other benefits. Fennel seeds contain a compound known as Anethole, which is known to suppress spasms of the stomach or gastrointestinal tract spasms. Therefore, it is considered to be an effective remedy for Acid Reflux.

  • Take half a tea spoon of Fennel Seeds and chew them slowly after your meals.
  • Add half a teaspoon of fennel seeds to one cup of boiling water and let it steep for 3–5 minutes. Strain, then add a very small amount of honey (optional). Drinking it between meals may help.

Anise and Lavender Tea

Here is a tea that you can make to help relieve the symptoms of heartburn, since it reduces the amount of acid you have in your stomach. Note that some variants of this remedy suggest adding peppermint, but this is NOT recommended since peppermint is known to relax the LES (described earlier), which is exactly what you don’t want to do.

  • Mix together equal amounts of aniseed and lavender.
  • Boil 2 1/2 cups of distilled water.
  • Pour the boiling water over a teaspoon of the herbal mixture.
  • Let this tea sit for 3 to 5 minutes.
  • Strain the tea and add a little bit of honey as a natural sweetener.
  • Drink up to 8 oz of this tea in the morning and 8 oz in the evening to get relief from acid reflux or heartburn.

Aloe Vera

Drinking aloe vera juice or consuming aloe vera gel may help soothe the lining of the esophagus and reduce acid reflux symptoms.

Chamomile Tea

Drinking a cup of chamomile tea before bed can help relax the muscles in the digestive tract and reduce acid reflux symptoms.

Slippery Elm

Taking slippery elm in the form of lozenges, capsules, or tea to coat and soothe the lining of the esophagus, helps reduce irritation from acid reflux.

I have stopped taking the PPI for 11 days. After a week I had what I think is acid rebound. Yesterday evening was bad, then I remembered that I had some charcoal tablets that I had bought a few months ago. I took for of these as suggested and within half an hour the indigestion pain was gone and stayed away the whole night. this eveing after eating it came back and I have taking 2 more tablets and it has worked again. Will keep you posted.

My husband has suffered from GERD, so he took Nexium. GERD was a lot better. But his heart started an erratic beating, and the doctor put him on a Beta-Blocker. He recently went to a Naturopath doctor and she took him off BOTH drugs and he is taking a Magnesium supplement. His heart condition was getting so bad that he was going in for HEART SURGERY. His heart does not beat erratically and his GERD is under control. Remember everyone – these drugs are seriously dangerous and everything should be done for prevention and health and natural remedies first. If anyone has heart problems since taking Nexium, an irregular heart beat, read the side effects and talk to your doctor. Better yet, go see a Naturopath doctor.

The feeling of having a large pill stuck in my throat has been with me for about a year and a half. Finally went to my nurse pract. and had an unltasound on my thyroid…all clear. Next a barium swollow (bizarre test)…all clear. Next step was the gastroscopy. That too was clear but the surgeon scripted a generic of prilosec. I take no meds now nor do I wish to start at the age of 52. I have heard about manuca honey and also ACV. I have had no other symptoms up to now but they do seem to be building, with burping and a heavy chest. Any advise anyone…Thanks.

I had awful acid fill my mouth up the other night where i spit it all out, then my stomach hurt and had yellow stool the next day (it has gotten back to normal color). I just need a remedy, this is inhibiting my life!!! 🙁

Check out this web site, it’s a must for guidelines on natural nutritional healing for any gut-related problem! i.e. acid reflux, gastritis, inflammation, leaky gut syndrome, etc. http://www.gapsdiet.com. There are detailed lists of what foods to eat and avoid (if you have allergies, you may have to eliminate some of them, and because I also have Candida, I’m not eating any fruit yet). Also detailed questions & answers about how the gut works, how problems develop, etc. It helped me understand why medications might be a vicious cycle that make the problems worse, etc. You can buy her book there which I highly recommend for anyone seriously ready to get well: ‘Gut and Psychology Syndrome’ by Dr. Natasha Campbell-McBride, MD. She’s an expert in the field. Don’t be misled by the subtitle; it’s for any of us ‘normal’ folks with any kind of gut-related issue, and it’s helping me and many people I know. Ultimately to heal your gut, you have to know what to put into it, and what not. Wishing everyone here vital health and well being!

I just discovered this discussion and am shocked to see so many other young people suffering from such intense bouts of acid reflux. mine started when i was about 20 and i treated it passively with Nexium until i moved to germany, lost my health insurance and had to find a more affordable option. I know that everyones case is different but i cant help but notice that not much is being said about prevention, just treatment and which pills and teas and herbs will fix things easily and permanently.
Ive been vegan now for about 4 years and it was the single most effective treatment for my reflux ive ever had, and ive tried just as many quick fixes, dangerous drugs, and alternative healing options as most of you have.
Many edible animal products like dairy and meat are acidic in nature, and theyre hard to digest. make things easier on your digestive system and you will produce less acid. Lots of vegetables and grains are alkaline. make your body more alkaline and it will produce less acid.
I highly recommend considering a serious dietary change, it changed my life for the better and basically got rid of my acid reflux (although it does come back when i consume unfriendly things like coffee, alcohol, tomatoes, etc.)
I highly recommend buying a book about macrobiotics or doing some googling. the principles of healthly living through whole foods is timeless and very effective for an acid reflux diet. plus they recommend apple cider vinegar for everything, including acid reflux. i take shots of it daily, and i use it as a natural conditioner!

yeah we know dat ppi caused many other effect but dat the only way for me to cure my oesophagitis and prevent from gerd,so i still depend on it and nexium are the best med for me so far cuz it can decrease the severe symtoms in time, mite be within few weeks.once heartburn severe there is no other way to make it down,v to be patience and continue ppi till the symptoms erase but remember to take prevention of it.oh maybe in order to cope with magnesium and calcium deficiency, try to take their supplements if cud afford it.conclusion my gerd symtoms decrease after consume ppi and i know it hard to stop and once i miss the dose for several weeks it will come back attack.so look at early symtoms.sumtime medicine helps the patient survive and remedies is just alternative or prevention so u all gona decide and me keep trying both methods.ok report of consuming sea cucumber and i though it helps me bit beside ppi, other r apple juice and sure i take gaviscon after eating.

  10. Anonymous

Just in the news the other day!: “long-term PPI use can cause low levels of magnesium”. This is in addition to low vitamin B levels, low calcium, etc. Really need to find an alternative for myself because this is getting scary.

  11. Asiancutie

I’ve had acid reflux for over 35 years and also have lupus, sjogrens, raynaud,s and fibromyalgia. I have been searching for years for a more natural way of dealing with acid reflux. I have been on Nexium for many years. I take it every other day, but I would like to get off of it completely as I think it causes many side effects. It makes my nails way dry, with ridges, splits and peeling. They just disintegrate. It also affects digestion and can cause gallbladder problems. GERD problems caused me to ignore symptoms of heart disease and I nearly had a heart attack last August. I have found a product called Stomach Comfort from Natures Sunshine that really works for me when I get that awful pain during the night. I keep a jar by my bed and chew two pills and within a few minutes the pain is gone. I also carry the tablets in my purse so I have them with me wherever I go. Hope these will help you too. GERD is an awful thing to deal with.

hey guys! ok today i buy jelly sea cucumber(jeli gamat)that i used to believe in heal any ulcer inside the bodies.and we cud find aloe vera with sea cucumber extract.ere wana share for u bout “GAMAT”sea cucumber.Gud try YAY….
In Malaysia, sea cucumbers are called gamat, ibu gamat, bat or balat. The name gamat applies to the Stichopus species of sea cucumber, which is known to contain bio-active substances that destroy micro-organisms, especially fungi. Among the Chinese, it is known as hai shen or “ginseng of the sea”?

Sea cucumbers are eaten as delicacies and are an excellent source of protein. It is prepared in soups and used in medicinal preparations. It is traditionally used by the Chinese to treat high blood pressure, asthma, internal bleeding, muscle weakness, and to enhance vitality and sexual function. In promoting healing after surgery, its effectiveness is considered to be even better than haruan fish (Channa striata).

Coastal inhabitants in Sabah (East Malaysia) bathe in water soaked with sea cucumbers, and eat them to treat epilepsy, to heal wounds, relieve constipation, and remove dead cells from the skin. It is also rubbed on the skin infected by ringworms.

Protein makes up about 44% of the dry weight of a sea cucumber, carbohydrates between 1 and 5%, and fats generally about 1%. Sea cucumbers also possess Saponin. Collagen from the body wall of sea cucumber is rich in protein and certain essential amino acids. Purified sea cucumber extract (air gamat) comes from the internal part of the body, and sea cucumber oil (minyak gamat) is processed from the tissues. They are used as remedies for wounds, lung ailments, parasitic skin infections, backaches, joint/rheumatic pains, heartburn/gastritis, allergies, stomach and mouth ulcers, and for promoting womb healing after delivery.

Sea cucumbers are also rich in minerals that vary among species. They contain antioxidants including vitamin E, essential fatty acids including eicosapentaenoic acid (EPA) and decosahexaenoic acid (DHA). Vitamin E is an antioxidant, essential for fertility, which slows down the degeneration process of cells and hence delays aging. EPA is crucial for healing wounds and restoring cells. By reducing blood clots in the large and small blood vessels, EPA is anti-thrombotic and lowers the risk of stroke.

Gamat is much more than a delicacy – it is a safe and nutritious form of food, and also has a wide range of medicinal properties.

I have just come across this site and I have to admit, in a selfish way, what a relief it is to find others suffering in a similar fashion to myself, sometimes I feel like I’m the only one. I’m afflicted mostly at night time, I have propped up my bed and when it’s at its worst I am almost upright. I start to drift off and am almost immediately awakened by a slight ‘flapping’ sensation just under my ribcage, this happens several times a night and keeps me awake till about 3 or 4 o’clock in the morning. I’m so tired sometimes I could cry, but enough about my history.
My doctor has put me on PPI’s and quite happily informed me that some people remain on them for 20 years or more. My heart dropped but I went along with it because I’m sure I don’t need to tell you how desperate it makes you feel.
Still, they don’t seem to be doing that much, apart from suppressing the damn acid. So I have been scouring the web in search of something…..anything…..I don’t know what, just a way out of this hole I’m in.
I am going to try the apples, fennel seeds and maybe the ginger root capsules if I can find them. I have also seen that caffeine plays merry hell so I will knock my chai latte on the head for a while.
Looking forward to reporting back to you that I am completely cured……..

  17. Asiancutie

well i had my fuji apples and tofee of liquorice but not completely relieve my heartburn and i still depend on nexium.for me those remedies for prevention not cure though.i juz hate the burning sensation and cud feel the stomach feels hot.

  18. molly

If your liver is congested or you have alot of gallstones, you’ll probably have bad indigestion and heartburn. Try doing a lemon juice and olive oil cleanse every few months and it may help. Another thing, I wouldn’t use any old vinegar – use organic apple cider vinegar. Everyone I talked to with this problem said bananas were the worst thing ever!!

  19. Asiancutie

Thanks everyone for their advice. Reflux was ruining my life. It was like a volcano erupting. I could taste and smell it coming up. I got some apple cider vinegar, and ginger root, and it’s working great. You people saved my life, thank you.

  21. Thanks to everyone who had suggestions to help this painful condition. I am wondering, though, why some people seem to feel a need to say nasty things about other people, just because they don’t agree with what they write. I believe that everyone is doing the best they can, and that spitting out vitriolic comments doesn’t help anyone.

  22. Could someone please tell me how long does it take to heal from LPR? Has anyone had success in healing?

I have been suffering with acid reflux and went and got a stomach scope done and found out I also had pylori. It was recommended that I tal
ke Manuka honey as it helps acid reflux and gets rid of pylori. Well I started taking it the other day and it took away the burning in my stomach and chest within minutes… Please be aware the PYLORI BACTERIA causes ACID REFLUX. Either get scoped or take a breath test as blood tests are totally unreliable. Also try bladderwrack tea – its supposed to be good for acid and pylori. Hope this helps some of you out there….

since sunday just gone i have been getting pains in my chest,it hurts when i swallow and also when i cough and also when i eat. for the past couple of weeks i have been belching quite a lot and it feels like i want to bring my food or drink back up. by researching the symptons on here it must be acid reflux (gerd).I for one will not be getting hooked on medicines prescribed by my doc, i’m gonna give the apple cider vinegar and ginger a try and an apple a day. it seems to be the most safe and has worked for a lot of people so why not

  25. I have AR/HH. For some reason, proly cuz of reflux, my mouth is tender. Anyone have any suggestion as to what I could swish with to help it get better? I would also like to know if there is something out there i can brush my teeth with other than toothpaste. It seems I have heartburn after I brush and that is leading me to believe it’s the taste of the toothpaste itself. Any suggestions would be welsome.

Does anyone know how to make the LES and UES sphincters stronger so that they close properly?

  27. Yes, don’t take advil, tylenol, asprin and other NSAIDs unless you WANT ulcers.

I had the worst acid reflux, felt like heart attacks, turns out it was caused by ADVIL and DAIRY products.

I just heard that FenuLife marketed by Frutarom Inc. helps acid reflux. I’m think I’m going to give it a shot because I don’t want to be on PPI’s for the long-term.

    This is what I did:
    — No more meats- My “meats” are mushrooms and zucchini
—-4 8oz glasses of water with 2 spoonfuls of raw vinegar
—-No diet cokes, or any other carbonated drinks
—-No diary or animal products, only occasionally
—-smaller meals, lots of salads and whole wheat breads.
Result: No more GERD, lost 20 lbs, lots of energy for tennis and or walking, Amazing clear mind, no more mental fog either.
Copy this and paste it on the fridge.

The best immediate relief from the pressure and asthma like symptoms? I have found, is to take two fingers and place them over the diaphram (which is located just above the ribs, yet below the breast bone). Give 2-3 quick compressions, this will cause a burp. Which will bring such great relief within 2-10 mins, and allow you to push the rest of the acid up from there. And mostly instant breathing relief! 🙂

I thought milk would help but just read that it can make it worse. I’ve been drinking milk all day. I also cant breathe. I noticed that apples are easy to tolerate. Sometimes crackers help too. I am so glad I found this site. I just woke up with the most awful taste in my mouth from acid reflux. Too much salsa while wrapping presents last night. The taste was awful. I brushed til I gagged, gargled, ate a piece of bread, drank water, etc. nothing worked to get rid of the taste. I sliced up an apple and voila! It’s gone. No more burning, no more taste

  47. Randall

My wife get especially bad acid stomachs while pregnant…and was throwing up several times a day.

We had been trying tums and some prescription stuff from her OB and they seemed to be totally ineffective.

Then we tried a few suggestions from here…and while she still gets sick a bit (what pregnant woman doesn’t?)…it is tremendously less with a LOT less burning sensation afterward.

Here is what we tried and the results:

    1) Apple cider vinegar seemed to make it a bit worse
    2) Baking soda, seemed to help a bit
    3) sliced apples helped quite a bit
    4) cooking meals with olive oil helped big time

  48. I have suffered from chronic acid reflux for years and nothing seemed to work. However, my doctor suggested Zegerid OTC just before it went over the counter and it has worked like a charm ever since I started. Although my doctor suggested taking it one hour before bed, I prefer to take it after dinner and it has relieved my acid reflux in all but my worst cases of eating spicey foods like mexican food with margaritas which is what I had for dinner tonight and why I am up right now typing this message.

  49. Mathangi

I have acid reflux for the past few weeks and it’s terrible. My shoulders and arms feel weak and heavy right after a meal especially in the noon. I have been taking a lemondrop right after my meal and it helps a little.
