Signs and Symptoms of Acid Reflux and Heartburn

Heartburn is a condition in which the liquid content of the stomach backs up (refluxes) into the esophagus. The most common and persistent symptom of Heartburn is a burning sensation centered in the middle of the chest and/or throat, brought on by stomach acid that churns up onto the lining of the esophagus.

Acid Reflux, also known as Gastroesophageal Reflux Disease (GERD), is a condition which has many symptoms that are similar to heartburn. In many cases, people suffering from Acid Reflux typically suffer from persistent heartburn two or more days per week. In the long term, this can be very serious since, over time, the reflux of stomach acid can erode or wear away the delicate esophagus lining. This can then lead to scar tissue, which causes swallowing problems. GERD has also been linked to an increased risk of esophageal cancer. However, some people have Acid Reflux without heartburn. In such cases, symptoms include chest pain, wheezing, coarseness in the throat, breathing problems, a bitter taste in the mouth, dry coughing, interrupted sleep, tightness in the throat, and halitosis or bad breath. Acid reflux can also lead to regurgitation of acid into the mouth, often due to overeating or bending down or going to bed right after a meal.

Causes of Acid Reflux

Just like other health conditions, there is not one specific cause of Acid Reflux and Heartburn. However, a malfunction of a band of muscle tissue called the Lower Esophageal Sphincter (LES) can ultimately lead to many of the problems and symptoms associated with Acid Reflux and Heartburn. The LES is a complex area of smooth muscles and various hormones, which is responsible for the opening and closing of the lower end of the esophagus when we eat and swallow. It normally keeps the stomach contents from regurgitating, but due to certain physical conditions it can weaken and lose its contraction control. If this happens, the LES fails to close up and cannot maintain the pressure barrier between stomach and esophagus. As a result, acid and pepsin from the stomach can back up and cause acidity and heartburn in the esophagus.

The most common causes of Acid Reflux and Heartburn include:

  • stress
  • some antidepressants and sedatives
  • elevated hormone levels during pregnancy
  • eating before going to bed
  • eating large meals
  • slower emptying of the stomach
  • frequently eating greasy, fried, and fatty foods
  • smoking
  • alcohol
  • drinking lots of bubbly (carbonated) beverages such as soda
  • diseases that weaken the esophageal muscle (such as scleroderma, mixed connective tissue disease, or hiatal hernias)

Home Remedies and Natural Treatments

Apple Cider Vinegar

Apple Cider Vinegar is an amazing remedy for Acid Reflux. It may sound bizarre to drink an acid as a cure for an acid problem, but there are good acids and bad acids and Apple Cider Vinegar is among the good ones.

  • Add 1 teaspoon of apple cider vinegar to 1/2 glass of water.
  • Sip this glass of water while eating your dinner.

Ginger Root

Ginger Root is an amazing natural herb that is known to absorb stomach acid and have the secondary effect of calming the nerves. For an effective natural remedy from the symptoms of acid reflux, try the following:

  • Purchase ginger root capsules from a natural health food or nutritional store.
  • Regularly take one capsule immediately after dinner.

Fennel Seeds

Fennel seed is an aromatic but powerful herb that helps in digestive conditions and has many other benefits. Fennel seeds contain a compound known as Anethole, which is known to suppress spasms of the stomach or gastrointestinal tract spasms. Therefore, it is considered to be an effective remedy for Acid Reflux.

  • Take half a tea spoon of Fennel Seeds and chew them slowly after your meals.
  • Add half a teaspoon of fennel seeds to one cup of boiling water and let it steep for 3–5 minutes. Strain, then add a very small amount of honey (optional). Drinking it between meals may help.

Anise and Lavender Tea

Here is a tea that you can make to help relieve the symptoms of heartburn, since it reduces the amount of acid you have in your stomach. Note that some variants of this remedy suggest adding peppermint, but this is NOT recommended since peppermint is known to relax the LES (described earlier), which is exactly what you don’t want to do.

  • Mix together equal amounts of aniseed and lavender.
  • Boil 2 1/2 cups of distilled water.
  • Pour the boiling water over a teaspoon of the herbal mixture.
  • Let this tea sit for 3 to 5 minutes.
  • Strain the tea and add a little bit of honey as a natural sweetener.
  • Drink up to 8 oz of this tea in the morning and 8 oz in the evening to get relief from acid reflux or heartburn.

Aloe Vera

Drinking aloe vera juice or consuming aloe vera gel may help soothe the lining of the esophagus and reduce acid reflux symptoms.

Chamomile Tea

Drinking a cup of chamomile tea before bed can help relax the muscles in the digestive tract and reduce acid reflux symptoms.

Slippery Elm

Taking slippery elm in the form of lozenges, capsules, or tea to coat and soothe the lining of the esophagus, helps reduce irritation from acid reflux.

I found out my pain in the chest and arm was attributed to a pinched nerve in my neck. Also foud out that the feeling of somthing in my throat may be due to a muscle spasm of the pharynx or larynx or one of these. It may not be LPR

  2. Aloe Vera juice includes an abundance of enzymes that can aid in digestion and can help to detoxify the system. Aloe lowers the acidity of the gastric juices found in the stomach and is a powerful anti-inflammatory, offering immediate relief for acid reflux sufferers. I found great info about how to use aloe for AR, etc. on this site:

Just a week ago I experienced a terrible burning sensation that made me dry heave. It took a while for the sensation to go away. Now it’s 2:05 A.M. and I woke up oit of my sleep with it. I am on vacation and don’t have much, but i tried 1T of dried and ground ginger powder mixed with water. It sooths and most importantly, takes my focus off of the horrible taste.

  14. I suffered from acid reflux daily and it was awful. I thought it was due to stress. Switched to drinking Almond milk and noticed it went away. Tried a glass of whole milk and within a half an hour it was back.
Lactose intolerance manifested itself in this manner and no others. Can drink Lactose free milk with no issues now.
Rarely suffer from heartburn unless I eat spicey food.
Drank milk for nearly 50 years with no issues. Strange what the body can develop allergies to at any time in life.

  15. Drink lots and lots of water when you feel that your stomach is acidified.

to Laura June 15, 2010 posting about Activia… first of all, activia has added fiber which is why you are having less reflux probably, but it is not really healthy for you. Why not make your own yogurt or kefir? Super cheap, and tasty, and doesn’t have all the added chemicals in it. I heard kefir is a great for acid reflux. I just started drinking homemade kefir yesterday. I have been making homemade yogurt now for almost a month, and the difference is amazing. With kefir the difference should be even more extraordinary. Kefir is a thick drink made from kefir grains and milk. I use organic raw milk because that is the healthiest. Others use goat milk, also healthy, and some use almond or soy milk. I would never use soy milk, but you can. Then you can make a shake. I put a little natural sweetener in (stevia or honey) and some fruit (banana) and a tad of vanilla extract. This morning I also put in protein powder. My husband thinks it tastes great. I think it is just so-so. But it really helps to fix everything going wrong in your GI tract. Do a search on it.

I have been a big coffee drinker for years. I still love coffee, but only have it a few times a week now. My GERD is always much worse after drinking coffee. If I don’t drink it for several days my suffering is much less.

I was mal nutrition and bad cough, resulting in years of reflux. Although I ate a healthy diet and don’t smoke and drink only little red wine, raw veg’s not good either.(very high stress). Heart burn & acid reflux is MUCH worse when you eat food high in fat. I had a quick lunch of some frozen chimichangas today before leaving for an appointment & I paid for it the rest of the day. The solution is to drink lots of water and eat plain almonds. I have tried antacids before from the dollar store which work fine but I really like natural alternatives better.

Any one out there have a horrible cough and breathing problems. I did for six months and suffered bad. My ent told me no caffeine, spicy foods, chocolate , smoking. Double up on my nexxium one in the morning and one half hour before going to bed one the fourth day i no longer coughed, spit up mucos and my breathing was good, no more inhalers. Who would have thought acid reflux. He saved my life twice.

  23. Hey Rosee

I too suffer from acid reflux with the same symptoms you have described. My GI Dr sent me to a cardiologist for a complete battery of test to rule out any serious underlying illness due to the palpitations and chest pain that I continue to have. I know how scary it is when you feel your heart tumbling around in your chest and throat and you can’t catch your breath!! Verdict….. esophageal spasms! Has this solved my reflux…no, but thankfully it’s not a heart thing. Get it checked out to give you some peace of mind

  24. Angie

Can anyone help me?…. Please!!!! Have severe GERD. I believe it may be linked to intestinal candida. However, I can’t take natural or prescription antifungals because of how bad the GERD is. It is a vicious cycle.

Did anyone hear about the recent lawsuit against Nexium about bone deterioration? scary stuff about women who were just walking and broke their legs. And if its Nexium, then its most likely the other PPI’s too!

  27. I’ve tried all sorts of coughing syrups, believe me, but none of them helps. Even though Nin Jiom Pei Pa Koa http://www.geocities.jp/ninjiom_hong_kong/index_e.htm does not eliminates the cough I like to stick to this chinese syrup I’ve been taking since I was a kid: Nin Jiom Pei Pa Koa. My grandfather is chinese, so I guess my mom got the advice from him. I was really surprised when I found that chinese market selling it here in Belgium. It does have a refreshing, soothing, sweetening effect…as long as it lasts…then back to coughing mode.

The amino acid L-Glutimine is good for digestion and supposedly if you take 1500 milligrams a day for 2 weeks it will help most ulcer and reflux problems. It is cheap and available so worth a try.

Other than that, apple or papaya enzyme tablets help to settle the stomach. Avoid baking soda – sodium bicarbonate – as it can cause a rebound in stomach acid and contains too much sodium. If you use apple cider vinegar rinse the mouth afterwards to avoid problems with etching of the tooth enamel and irritation of the throat which may already be raw or ulcerated from stomach acid.

Always see a doctor for a diagnosis as this can be signs of more serious problems – if you don’t like the meds then you can try the naturals but first find out exactly what the problem is and whether it is life threatening.

For all those people suffering from heartburn, have you heard of proper “food combining”? There is a book you can buy online called “great taste no pain” by Sherry Brescia, and it is a amazing book which should be read by everyone suffering digestive problems. It outlines how you should properly combine your foods so they digest easier. It works fantastic! I think there is a four day eating plan you can download free on her website. It isnt a “diet” its a healthy eating lifestyle and you can still enjoy the foods you love, you just need to combine them correctly. I highly suggest this book!

Ok well i’ve been sick for the past 6 weeks and at first i didnt have any type of acid reflux symptoms and then suddenly i started getting them really bad to wear i couldnt hardly swallow cause it hurt so bad so my GI dr did a endoscopy and didnt really find anything all he did was streatch my esophagus so i could swallow better he didnt say i had acid reflux or anything just that the lining of my stomach was inflamed but he said there was nothing to worry about so a couple of weeks ago my family dr did blood work on me and found out that i have a vitamin b12 deffenicey and that the stomach problems and pain in my throat and chest is from the deffenicey. I really hope thiis is true cause it is really causing alot of pain and im hopeing once i start getting the shots on a regular basis that it will all go away i never thought a vitamin b12 deff could make u so sick but i guess if your stomach aint asborbing any of the b12 that u take in from food then it can make u sick ive never had it this bad before i got sick.I would not wish this vitamin deff on anybody i have to take shots for the rest of my life. What do yall think? Has anybody ever had this problem before? Thanks.

HAS ANYONE MENTIONED THE BOOK “NO MORE HEARTBURN” BY SHERRY ROGERS? It’s a must read for anyone with digestive problems. Also the book “Gut and Psychology Syndrome” as mentioned before. Both of these books will change your life.

  38. My heart goes out to all of you. I have had acid reflux for years. At times very bad sickness erosive esophagus, ulcer, chronic inflamation. I have been on several proton pump inhibitors and now take 2 protonix a day. I had esophageal cancer surgery 21/2 years ago, and was lucky it was caught very early. A very hard surgery they removed my esophagus and pulled my stomach up to make a new one…but I’m still here… I recently had a endoscopic exam due to feeling bad (again) and have an ulcer in the gastor intestional tract, and chronic inflamation. THis is a terrible sickness. I am now taking restora proviotic, and folic acid in hope it will help with the cancer and digestion. My gastrointologist agreed with this. Will have to have another endoscopic exam to check on ulcer because they can come from cancer, although other ares tested the first time, the biopsy came back ok…It is a worry what this reflux can do to you. There is a surgery now where they can help with the reflux talk to your Dr. about it, that is to late for me. As my Dr. said this is a very bad disease and some people have it much worse then others, like me. Good luck to all of you.

I have been suffering from acid reflux since the past 3 years. Lots of mucus in the mouth. I think an apple a day has solved my problem to a great extent. Apple works really like a wonder. Anybody having this problem should definitely try the apple. I thank this web site for providing this valuable information.

Pei pa koa is pretty decent cough medicine (from herbal as I remembered), great non alcoholic medicine, some western cough medicine are more effective, but this is non drowsy.

for a quick fix for heartburn try a teaspoon of bi-carb or baking soda in half a glass of water (it’s instant) then no food for three hours.

10 cups of coffee and tea each day with two spoons of sugar in each. Thats 5000 tespoons each year over ten years 50,000 I cut out sugar in my tea and coffee. Now no problem with reflux.

  43. Hi all, when I wake up with acid stomach I drink grated ginger in hot water with a small teaspoon of honey. I find the trick is to drink slowly and wait for atleast 20 mins before you eat. If you are in a really bad way, cook up some brown rice and mix it with grated carrot, grated apple and stir in a teaspoon of tahini, a small squirt of lemon juice and a small teaspoon of honey….this is a big relief to the stomach. AIM Herbal fibreblend is also excellent for cleaning out the bowel..its non habit forming and really gets in and gives the bowels the cleaning and relief it needs. I have chronic irritable bowel w leaky gut and these things really help. Another good solution for me is home made chicken soup…the simpler the better. Cook some onions in olive oil, add some chicken pieces, throw in any herbs you like, I use curry leaves and kaffir lime leaves, add some natural stock cubes (Massel my fav) (2-3), then some carrotts, potatoes, natural salt (Herbamare) and ground pepper…go easy on pepper. Top up with water and cook for 20-30 mins or until the chicken is falling off the bone. Serve w a small bowl of brown rice, I usually squirt a bit of lime juice on the top with a tiny dash of sesame oil. If you like garlic out this in after you add the chicken. You can add whatever vegies you like to the soup. The key is to have SMALL meals and omit preservatives from your diet. I do this for a few days then Im back to feeling good again. Also dont eat late at night. Good luck. I hope you like the soup and get well again soon:-)

I have been suffering from acid reflux. I have been reading all your comments and looking in my kitchen but the only thing i could find is corrots and being 2.30am don’t really fancy going to 24hr tesco to buy apple cider vineger and extra virgin olive oil and apples!. While reading more of your comments and chomping on a carrot the pain is starting to ease. Maybe one more corrot and I might be able to sit on the sofa and not roam around the house!.
Thankyou whoever suggested corrots and I will be stocking up on the other bits tomorrow!!!

…in addition Theives oil, used with a base oil like Almond oil, takes away a sore throat from acid reflux or if you have a cold. It works I use it along with my other family members.

  47. Carrie

I have acid reflux and was on Zegrid but had a bad reaction to it. My GI doctor took me off — now on Pepcid Complete twice a day…but I also use 2oz of Aloe Vera juice 1oz am and 1oz pm and maybe a little more in the afternoon if needed, however drinking too much can cause diarrhea and very vivid dreams(just cut back and the vivid dreams went away). In addition, I use some Young Living Essential Oils topically on my stomach to aid in digestion. In the morning I use Di-Gize and Frankincense with a base oil like almond oil. This has seemed to help and I am trying to get myself off from the Pepcid Complete. The Aloe Vera juice could take anywhere from 3weeks to 90 days to repair your system, at least this is what I have read. This is my treatment plan for now. The oils do help especially at night. But with oils the most important is to use them about 2-3 times a day. I hope this helps someone else because I truly understand your pain.
