Signs and Symptoms of Acid Reflux and Heartburn

Heartburn is a condition in which the liquid content of the stomach backs up (refluxes) into the esophagus. The most common and persistent symptom of Heartburn is a burning sensation centered in the middle of the chest and/or throat, brought on by stomach acid that churns up onto the lining of the esophagus.

Acid Reflux, also known as Gastroesophageal Reflux Disease (GERD), is a condition which has many symptoms that are similar to heartburn. In many cases, people suffering from Acid Reflux typically suffer from persistent heartburn two or more days per week. In the long term, this can be very serious since, over time, the reflux of stomach acid can erode or wear away the delicate esophagus lining. This can then lead to scar tissue, which causes swallowing problems. GERD has also been linked to an increased risk of esophageal cancer. However, some people have Acid Reflux without heartburn. In such cases, symptoms include chest pain, wheezing, coarseness in the throat, breathing problems, a bitter taste in the mouth, dry coughing, interrupted sleep, tightness in the throat, and halitosis or bad breath. Acid reflux can also lead to regurgitation of acid into the mouth, often due to overeating or bending down or going to bed right after a meal.

Causes of Acid Reflux

Just like other health conditions, there is not one specific cause of Acid Reflux and Heartburn. However, a malfunction of a band of muscle tissue called the Lower Esophageal Sphincter (LES) can ultimately lead to many of the problems and symptoms associated with Acid Reflux and Heartburn. The LES is a complex area of smooth muscles and various hormones, which is responsible for the opening and closing of the lower end of the esophagus when we eat and swallow. It normally keeps the stomach contents from regurgitating, but due to certain physical conditions it can weaken and lose its contraction control. If this happens, the LES fails to close up and cannot maintain the pressure barrier between stomach and esophagus. As a result, acid and pepsin from the stomach can back up and cause acidity and heartburn in the esophagus.

The most common causes of Acid Reflux and Heartburn include:

  • stress
  • some antidepressants and sedatives
  • elevated hormone levels during pregnancy
  • eating before going to bed
  • eating large meals
  • slower emptying of the stomach
  • frequently eating greasy, fried, and fatty foods
  • smoking
  • alcohol
  • drinking lots of bubbly (carbonated) beverages such as soda
  • diseases that weaken the esophageal muscle (such as scleroderma, mixed connective tissue disease, or hiatal hernias)

Home Remedies and Natural Treatments

Apple Cider Vinegar

Apple Cider Vinegar is an amazing remedy for Acid Reflux. It may sound bizarre to drink an acid as a cure for an acid problem, but there are good acids and bad acids and Apple Cider Vinegar is among the good ones.

  • Add 1 teaspoon of apple cider vinegar to 1/2 glass of water.
  • Sip this glass of water while eating your dinner.

Ginger Root

Ginger Root is an amazing natural herb that is known to absorb stomach acid and have the secondary effect of calming the nerves. For an effective natural remedy from the symptoms of acid reflux, try the following:

  • Purchase ginger root capsules from a natural health food or nutritional store.
  • Regularly take one capsule immediately after dinner.

Fennel Seeds

Fennel seed is an aromatic but powerful herb that helps in digestive conditions and has many other benefits. Fennel seeds contain a compound known as Anethole, which is known to suppress spasms of the stomach or gastrointestinal tract spasms. Therefore, it is considered to be an effective remedy for Acid Reflux.

  • Take half a tea spoon of Fennel Seeds and chew them slowly after your meals.
  • Add half a teaspoon of fennel seeds to one cup of boiling water and let it steep for 3–5 minutes. Strain, then add a very small amount of honey (optional). Drinking it between meals may help.

Anise and Lavender Tea

Here is a tea that you can make to help relieve the symptoms of heartburn, since it reduces the amount of acid you have in your stomach. Note that some variants of this remedy suggest adding peppermint, but this is NOT recommended since peppermint is known to relax the LES (described earlier), which is exactly what you don’t want to do.

  • Mix together equal amounts of aniseed and lavender.
  • Boil 2 1/2 cups of distilled water.
  • Pour the boiling water over a teaspoon of the herbal mixture.
  • Let this tea sit for 3 to 5 minutes.
  • Strain the tea and add a little bit of honey as a natural sweetener.
  • Drink up to 8 oz of this tea in the morning and 8 oz in the evening to get relief from acid reflux or heartburn.

Aloe Vera

Drinking aloe vera juice or consuming aloe vera gel may help soothe the lining of the esophagus and reduce acid reflux symptoms.

Chamomile Tea

Drinking a cup of chamomile tea before bed can help relax the muscles in the digestive tract and reduce acid reflux symptoms.

Slippery Elm

Taking slippery elm in the form of lozenges, capsules, or tea to coat and soothe the lining of the esophagus, helps reduce irritation from acid reflux.

Exercise regularly for about an hour helped me a lot to minimize acid stake up in the stomach.

  2. I had acid reflux for about two years. I went on the Atkins lo-carb diet & NO BREAD or wheat products. The acid reflux stopped. If I cheat and have a nibble of bread it comes right back. I also use oregano, thyme, turmeric, celery seed, garlic, cider vinegar and olive oil as a salad dressing and take ginger, cinnamon daily. I switched to potassium salt and cut out regular salt and my high blood pressure dropped back to normal.

My reflux developed slowly over time. Tums used to work, Zantac etc till I progressed to the proton pump inhibitors. I just came off yet another 14 day therapy – this time Prevacid, and the next day the reflux was back with a vengence. Scared me to death. So I am DONE with all the pills. It’s miserable, but I am sworn off of caffiene, chocolate and most alcohol. I used to drinks pots of coffee – so now I’m getting used to decaf. No more wine with dinner, but beer doesn’t seem to bother me. I’ve learned the hard way – limit the offending foods.

ok all of you, Ive tried many things over the last few years to find the cure, and so far it boils down to gold kili ginger drink. When you find yourself having acidic attacks, or before you eat something have at least one cup of ginger tea. Doctors did a study saying it relaxes the lower esophagul sphincter, well there freakin wrong they just want you to think that so they can have you pay for more visits and pills with them, even if it kills you. Ginger is a well known herb that crreats stimulation of the digestive tract and tones the stomach muscles, I repeat TONES the stomach muscles, meaning it will strengthen your most suffered muscle along with your stomach, the lower esophagul sphincter. Ive tried drinking this tea for two days, and I have seen a decrease in acid regurgitation, illiminated pain in my esophagul sphincter and I can feel it contracting in my abdomen, I know exactly where it is Iam a spa therapist. Listen to my advice because if I have suffered for at least ten years of this crap and studied the anatomy, I know what Iam talking about. But yet again, if you think it is doing the less desired effect, it might not be for you, I dont want to make it worse, all I know is it works 100 percent for me, it is a well known fact around the internet that ginger is a stomach muscle toner. Please try it hope it helps, good luck to all of you.

I have pulmonary fibrosis and suffer constant coughs. I have been taking Natokinase and Serrapeptase that I buy online in Arizona. These enzymes help me lower my blood pressure (without giving up Pritor) and help me control my cough and resistance to fatigue. Recently, I started taking turmeric powder tea. I learned that it is anti-inflammatory and helps alleviate arthritic pain. Later, I used fresh yellow and white ginger which I boil slowly in 30 minutes plus pandan leaves and wheatgrass. I take this concoction throughout the day.
However, a few days ago, I started to have acid reflux. I stopped all my herbal medicines. However, acid reflux does not go away. I tried apple cider but my stomach squirked. Now I am taking Motillium but it gives me only temporary relief so I have to take it 1 or twice daily. I am afraid my esophagus would be damaged if I cannot stop AR. I need any herbal meds that will permanently cure my AR. Any suggestion is welcome. I come from Manila, Philippines.

  15. Nothing is helping me. Planning to do a detox and get tested for celiac disease. Also planning to quit my job so that I can try out natural remedies (they are time consuming) and ultimately quit the Nexium and other medicines.

I have discovered after many years of reflux issues that cheese is the star of the reflux melodrama and that sipping plain old tap water gives close to instant relief.

  17. i would like to share a cure to reflux acid sufferer because i am one of you before. simply drink the wheatgrass powder. 3 tables spoon to 1 glass of normal or cold water 200 ml. dissolve the powder and drink it first thing in the morning when you wake up. at least 3 times aday in between meals because it is best with empty stomach take it for a months as long as you like. i am already cured and can eat normally now i am just trying to avoid sour, chilly fatty foods.

  18. I have been suffering with acid reflux for 2 years, and nexium didn’t work for me either. I am going to try the artichoke and aloe to see if that works (i am crossing my fingers)

Just curious, how many of you have kidney stones as well?

  19. Has anyone tried elevating their body with a foam wedge? Is it comfortable? I tried putting bricks under the head of the bed but was very uncomfortable and couldnt sleep.

  20. This is a great discussion board. I’ve been suffering from GERD for more than a yr now n nexium has stopped working. afraid 2sleep ‘coz of reflux n have no energy left. I’ll try d apple cider vinegar, olive oil n GNC products n post on whether they work. praying for all of u fellow sufferers out there.

Has anyone had bone loss due to taking Nexium? There’s research indicating long term use could lead to bone loss. The doctor never mentioned that and I have had both hips replaced since. Thanks for all the options since Nexium is not one for me. Please ask your doctor about bone loss if you do take pump inhibitors.

    A Cure for Acid Reflux
I use Sauerkraut instead of any of the prescription or over the counter anti-acids, some are acid blockers which by blocking the production of stomach acids reduce the amount of acids
needed to process your foods, others neutralize the acids present.
Foods not properly digested can set and rot in your stomach and intestines. Cabbage when fermented in the
process of becoming Sauerkraut creates a natural enzime that causes the stomach acids to do their job without causing undue discomfort also the juice works as well, in some
countries Sauerkraut juice is sold for just stomach relief.
I used to suffer from acid reflux and was using a large bottle of tums regularly, then used Prilosec OTC. After using Sauerkraut
I have not used any other anti-acids (some of which are very hard on your liver) for over 5 years. Hope this helps, give it a try !

I am referring to a shot glass for mixing drinks. It is aloe vera juice extract not okra. Please try the aloe juice and artichoke combined as per my post on June 20, 2012. I felt results within 24 hours. Today for lunch I had nachos with jalapeños and salsa and have no problems. I no longer need to take anything for heartburn and acid reflux. It costs around to try this cure. I know I spent a lot more on Nexium and Prilosec which didn’t work that well, nor cure it.

  29. Tester

I was diagnosed with acid reflux a few years back, but could not stick to a diet. I dislike bland foods, enjoy going out with my friends, and travel at least once or twice a month for business.

  30. @ Charmen – I think M is trying to say “give it a try” by saying “give it a shot”. It doesn’t sound like she’s referring to any amount of okra juice. I hope it helps!

  31. charmen

@mayb what do u mean by shot? please reps….shot of glass or tablespoon?

  32. Acid reflux can be caused by a lot of different reasons. Things that worked for others might not work for you. You have to keep trying different things until one sticks. For me raw okra juice worked like a charm.. Please give it a shot. Make sure the okra are immature and small and also remove the seeds.

  33. Maryb

    Steph,
I don’t know about homage aloe juice. I used the GNC brand, it does not have a slimy texture. The artichoke extract and the aloe juice together worked well.

  34. PattMeredith

I read online to try eating an apple if you have acid reflux. TRY IT! I have had a pretty bad case of reflux and ate an apple (I used Empire or Cortland) and unless I have been really bad about what I have eaten, one apple does it. It is worth a try before having to use drugs (that tell you not to take them for longer than X days/months and has negative side effects.

  35. Linda

@ Cheri, Try taking 3-4 drops of Oil of Oregano under the tongue or mix it in a glass of water or mango juice, depending on your tolerance level. I take it before going to bed and it helps me with coughing throughout the night. Remember it is very bitter, so Swallow it as fast as possible and have a glass of water or juice ready if you are taking it under the tongue. And if mixing in drinks, mix in small amount of water or juice so that you can drink it fast 🙂 I hope it helps!

Thanks

  37. Cheri

I have been coughing for 10 months and recently diagnosed with “silent reflux”. I cough all the time and mostly when I lay down at night. I have been on Nexium for 2 months and it isn’t working. I have also been on pepcid and prilosec. Just wondering if there is a natural remedy to help with this cough that won’t go away.

the best thing to use for acid reflux disease is baking soda mixed with 250 ml of water

  39. MaryB

I cured my acid reflux in 5 weeks.  I had gone the route of apple cider vinegar( hated the taste and burning in my throat), then Prilosec, and Nexium.   Then I met an
Herbalist.  She had me go to GNC and get the Natures Way Artichoke Extract.   I took two capsules right when I finished breakfast and two capsules right after dinner every day.  She also had me get Natural Brand Aloe Vera juice extract (wildberry is my favorite).  I would take two shots right when I woke up an two shots right before I went to bed. Sometimes I would take a shot mid afternoon ( not very often).  I quit the Nexium after being on the artichoke and aloe for 24 hours and had no burning   I still followed the bland acid reflux diet.  But at five weeks I forgot to take the artichoke one morning and had no burning, so I decided to back off the artichoke and aloe Vera in the next couple of days. Then quit i it. I slowly started eating spicy foods again and had no issues.  It has been a year now.   I told one of my husbands customer about it. (she had been on Nexium for around a year). She called me the next morning an said she slept all night for the first time in ages, she stopped the nexium that day and was cured in 5 weeks with no more issues. My daughter told a coworker about it and hers is cured too.  The artichoke help control the bile.  The aloe helps heal.  Please try it.  IT WORKS!!

Be very very careful. I read about apple cider vineger helping people on the internet and tried it…following all instructions, adding it to water. Well, I have ulcerative colitis and the apple cider vineger was like drinking acid. It burned my intestines so badly, I had to have my large intestine completely removed. I now have to spend the rest of my life wearing an ostomy bag. A reversal is impossible because the small piece they leave in for that procedure is also covered with ulcerative colitis. The large intestine they removed was covered with abcesses and they said i was dying of Toxic Mega Colon…had to have 14 blood transfusions. Even with the Ilestomy, I am still bleeding rectally and in daily pain, so …PLEASE… be careful of apple cider vinegar. Mary C.

Jesus, you are sadly mistaken. I’m 18 years old and have been running cross country, indoor and outdoor track for the past 6 years. In addition, I’ve eaten extremely well since a very young age. So no, I wouldn’t say I “already caused a more serious condition” or that I’m a couch potato by any means. Good try though!

  42. Hey Leigh, Why don’t you try taking one table spoon of Apple Cider Vinegar diluted in a glass of water. Also mix a pinch of salt to it. It works wonders! Good luck!

  43. Leigh

Um, Jesus, I have GERD and been eating the same healthy, vegetarian diet for 14 years. I just started getting symptoms this year & my diet has not changed. I also am an aerobics instructor, rock climber, and triathlete- it’s not all lifestyle.

face it people reflux and gerd are caused by poor diet and eating with lack of excerise. and if changing your diet doesn’t work make sure you are pooping right. you may just have digestive problems causing an acid backup.stay active don’t be a couch potatoe and if this still doesn’t give you some relief in a couple weeks you have probably already caused a more serious condition to result.

Losing your hair is not fun. I haven’t tried any of these remedies yet, but will. Thanks.

and one more thing, when you chew this root, you need to swallow the saliva, and spit out the used root parts after.
