Signs and Symptoms of Acid Reflux and Heartburn

Heartburn is a condition in which the liquid content of the stomach backs up (refluxes) into the esophagus. The most common and persistent symptom of Heartburn is a burning sensation centered in the middle of the chest and/or throat, brought on by stomach acid that churns up onto the lining of the esophagus.

Acid Reflux, also known as Gastroesophageal Reflux Disease (GERD), is a condition which has many symptoms that are similar to heartburn. In many cases, people suffering from Acid Reflux typically suffer from persistent heartburn two or more days per week. In the long term, this can be very serious since, over time, the reflux of stomach acid can erode or wear away the delicate esophagus lining. This can then lead to scar tissue, which causes swallowing problems. GERD has also been linked to an increased risk of esophageal cancer. However, some people have Acid Reflux without heartburn. In such cases, symptoms include chest pain, wheezing, coarseness in the throat, breathing problems, a bitter taste in the mouth, dry coughing, interrupted sleep, tightness in the throat, and halitosis or bad breath. Acid reflux can also lead to regurgitation of acid into the mouth, often due to overeating or bending down or going to bed right after a meal.

Causes of Acid Reflux

Just like other health conditions, there is not one specific cause of Acid Reflux and Heartburn. However, a malfunction of a band of muscle tissue called the Lower Esophageal Sphincter (LES) can ultimately lead to many of the problems and symptoms associated with Acid Reflux and Heartburn. The LES is a complex area of smooth muscles and various hormones, which is responsible for the opening and closing of the lower end of the esophagus when we eat and swallow. It normally keeps the stomach contents from regurgitating, but due to certain physical conditions it can weaken and lose its contraction control. If this happens, the LES fails to close up and cannot maintain the pressure barrier between stomach and esophagus. As a result, acid and pepsin from the stomach can back up and cause acidity and heartburn in the esophagus.

The most common causes of Acid Reflux and Heartburn include:

  • stress
  • some antidepressants and sedatives
  • elevated hormone levels during pregnancy
  • eating before going to bed
  • eating large meals
  • slower emptying of the stomach
  • frequently eating greasy, fried, and fatty foods
  • smoking
  • alcohol
  • drinking lots of bubbly (carbonated) beverages such as soda
  • diseases that weaken the esophageal muscle (such as scleroderma, mixed connective tissue disease, or hiatal hernias)

Home Remedies and Natural Treatments

Apple Cider Vinegar

Apple Cider Vinegar is an amazing remedy for Acid Reflux. It may sound bizarre to drink an acid as a cure for an acid problem, but there are good acids and bad acids and Apple Cider Vinegar is among the good ones.

  • Add 1 teaspoon of apple cider vinegar to 1/2 glass of water.
  • Sip this glass of water while eating your dinner.

Ginger Root

Ginger Root is an amazing natural herb that is known to absorb stomach acid and have the secondary effect of calming the nerves. For an effective natural remedy from the symptoms of acid reflux, try the following:

  • Purchase ginger root capsules from a natural health food or nutritional store.
  • Regularly take one capsule immediately after dinner.

Fennel Seeds

Fennel seed is an aromatic but powerful herb that helps in digestive conditions and has many other benefits. Fennel seeds contain a compound known as Anethole, which is known to suppress spasms of the stomach or gastrointestinal tract spasms. Therefore, it is considered to be an effective remedy for Acid Reflux.

  • Take half a tea spoon of Fennel Seeds and chew them slowly after your meals.
  • Add half a teaspoon of fennel seeds to one cup of boiling water and let it steep for 3–5 minutes. Strain, then add a very small amount of honey (optional). Drinking it between meals may help.

Anise and Lavender Tea

Here is a tea that you can make to help relieve the symptoms of heartburn, since it reduces the amount of acid you have in your stomach. Note that some variants of this remedy suggest adding peppermint, but this is NOT recommended since peppermint is known to relax the LES (described earlier), which is exactly what you don’t want to do.

  • Mix together equal amounts of aniseed and lavender.
  • Boil 2 1/2 cups of distilled water.
  • Pour the boiling water over a teaspoon of the herbal mixture.
  • Let this tea sit for 3 to 5 minutes.
  • Strain the tea and add a little bit of honey as a natural sweetener.
  • Drink up to 8 oz of this tea in the morning and 8 oz in the evening to get relief from acid reflux or heartburn.

Aloe Vera

Drinking aloe vera juice or consuming aloe vera gel may help soothe the lining of the esophagus and reduce acid reflux symptoms.

Chamomile Tea

Drinking a cup of chamomile tea before bed can help relax the muscles in the digestive tract and reduce acid reflux symptoms.

Slippery Elm

Taking slippery elm in the form of lozenges, capsules, or tea to coat and soothe the lining of the esophagus, helps reduce irritation from acid reflux.

I am taking Zantac in the morning and Prilosec before bed. Zantac only works for a couple of hours then a burning sensation starts, making me feel sick. Any suggestions on what to do?

For Acid Reflux you should take Avipattikar Churna (divya pharmacy’s) or Gaisantak Bati (shree baidyanath). See the package for dosage please.

  6. @ Garcia on December 1, 2015: Ok. Great. Now, can you please share these home remedies with the rest of us, please?

  7. Lemon is working very good for me.

  8. Dyslexic me incorrectly comprehended the apple cider vinegar recipe to be 1/2 and 1/2. So down went a 1/4 cup of water mixed with a 1/4 cup of Braggs Apple Cider Vinegar. It absolutely helped nip my GERD symptoms in the bud. Kudos to everyone who made this fabulous website happen. Thank you so much for sharing.

  9. Hi, I’ve had acid reflux since the age of 17. No medicine worked for me and I constantly felt really ill because of acid reflux along with bad back pains. The ONLY thing that has worked for me was changing my diet. No more chips, soda, fast food, and spicy foods. I’m not going to lie I didn’t completely stop. But I did get in the habit of eating A LOT healthier so the very FEW times I did grab 1 bag of chips, or did eat fast food. It didn’t make me feel sick because of how much cleaner I was eating. Fast foods, chips and sodas were all reduced, to eating just once or twice a month and I never felt better. ALSO I stopped taking my medicine. After 7 years, recently this past month, I started eating fast food about 3x a week for lunch and very spicy chips. The outcome has been horrible. The Acid Reflux is making me feel horrible again. I’m going to have to cut back on all that bad food again because I want to feel better permanentely not temporarily with medicine. Hope this helps someone out there.

I agree that home remedies can help with Acid Reflux – and many people have had outstanding success with apple cider vinegar. However, I think a more proven route to reducing symptoms, or even becoming symptom free, is a more comprehensive approach that includes weight management (BMI at or under 25), a balanced GERD-friendly diet, several important lifestyle changes (leaving things like alcohol and smoking are BIG), intermittent use of H2-blockers or antacids, and ideally, a really good doctor.

  14. Kanch

Mr. Desai, I too have the same problem for many years. I assume its all connected with gerd, if you happen to find a solution please let me know.

For acid reflux, use Bragg Apple Cider Vinegar and use Lilly Aloe Vera. It’s not good to eat gluten bread. Go to a Herbal store to get supplies.

My tips on how I completely cured my heartburn & acid reflux.
Tip 1: An immediate relief is found via ginger root. Seems to neutralise the esophagus immediately.
Tip 2: Apple Cider Vinegar diluted in water and then down it every morning.
Tip 3: have a look at the free video on http://solvehealthproblem.com/acidreflux and just follow the methods it gives you. Takes about a week but reflux symptoms will then be gone forever.
Tip 4: Don’t push your luck! Once you feel your symptoms have relieved, don’t be silly and go for that greasy take away! Be cautious what you eat without it ruling your life.

After years of problems with various family members our new best friend is Slippery elm powder. Mix it with cold water to make an increasingly globulous paste, then add any kind of milk or hot chocolate. It coats the mucous lining the oesophagus. We’ve found it fantastic for reflux, nausea, IBS, post vomiting at various times.
When mixed with raw egg and topped with boiled milk & honey and cinnamon, it makes what is supposed to be the last food many can tolerate. If taken 3 times a day, it’s supposed to coat the entire digestive system lining allowing time to heal without constant erosion by acid.

  19. @ H.P.Desai – I suggest you should go get yourself checked by a doctor. Herbal remedies are good but your health condition seems complicated. Good luck!

Please advise me. I have acute hyper acidity. I think due to this, I often have a feeling of tightness and breathlessness especially when washing my head. And due to this my ears get blocked all the time and nose becomes dry and I feel air pressure all the time. I’m diabetic too. Please advise!

I would like to know if exercising can help reduce the amount of acid in your body. What causes these seizure like feelings when you are about to sleep.

I think by ingesting ACV prior to eating, your stomach feels that enough acid has been produced and hence decreases acid production. It will not be effective after eating if you use antacids such as tums and naturally enhanced antacids.

Has anyone been diagnosed with laryngeal hypersensitivity, stemming from a virus that causes nerve damage? I read a little about that, but not much info exists. It sounds like my problem. I have throat burn, but an endoscopy did not reveal erosion even though I have a hiatal hernia. The burn is constant and I am miserable. PPIs, Tums, Mylanta, nothing helps.

    Hi
I am an LPR/GERD sufferer and a LINX implantee.
This article refers to reflux as an acid problem.
It is both a Pepsin and acid problem but not necessarily caused by incompetence at the LES Lower Esophageal Sphincter. Hyperchlohydria or low stomach acid is a problem that is age related and causes poor mineral absorption, lowered infection protection and reflux symptoms. It seems odd that low acid can cause acid reflux but it does. The other stomach sphincter at the exit of the stomach requires strong acid to function. if it doesn’t get that signal we get bloating and gastroparesis (slow stomach emptying). The full bloated stomach forces open the top sphincter and reflux takes place. Increasing stomach acid in these conditions can often alleviate the problem. That is why we hear anecdotal stories of Apple Cider Vinegar helping. If you suspect this may be your problem ask your doctor for a Heidelberg Test. You can also supplement acid with Betaine HCL with meals and avoid drinking with meals (this keeps the acid strong).
The lack of minerals absorbed by low stomach acid also contributes to poor sphincter opening.
I have been researching these issues for some years now and my results are free to read on my Facebook page Justpassingthrough. Best wishes and better health to you all! JPT

I am having continuous white spit (saliva) for the last few days. Is it due to acid reflux and, if so, how should i cure it?

Please advise me on what to do… when I wake up in the morning, my mouth is always bitter as if I chewed bitter cola. Secondly I am having constant chest pain, in the normal day I feel like white cream on my tongue which has an unpleasant smell. I have taken several malaria drugs but it’s still there. I was asked to take ulcer drugs which I am taking right now but I still feel the same way. Sometimes the pain in my chest looks as if it is scheczing and I don’t have any born at all. Please advise me on what to do and the drugs to take, since I am very confused. My contact info is ibeobinna34@yahoo.com or 07063790765.

Acids help digest your food. When you get acid build up it’s because the food is not digesting properly. I now take an enzyme with every meal and it has almost completely eliminated the acid reflux. I however have a hiatal hernia and if I go to bed too soon after eating I awake an hour later with acid burn taste in my throat. I will add the apple cider vinegar to my diet as well.

Unhealthy lifestyle and stress are causing acidity in adults and children these days. If you have regular heartburn two or more times a week and haven’t notified your doctor, you’re ignoring one of the biggest cancer risk factors around.
Consult your physician and take his advise.

  32. @Mrs Govender, your symptoms don’t seem to be acid reflux symptoms. Therefore, you should go see a doctor ASAP before it is too late. It could be heart related problem. When any pain becomes unbearable, it is not safe to keep using herbal remedies. Herbs work great for slow and longer term treatments.
    Good luck!

  33. Mrs govender

Hi, I seem to be getting heavy chest pain. How would you know if its acid reflux or not anything else? Anything I do i’m getting tired. What could it be? I even find myself wheezing most of the time, funny noise when I go to bed, and to clear it everyone gets disturbed. Please help. Mrs. Govender.

I agree, Organic Apple Cider Vinegar is great for many things. I use Bragg’s brand. WHAT I’m going to say next was a gradual change— I got tired of pumping pills that were not healing me, but only causing more of what they call “disease” over about 17 years. My daughter started sharing info that she was researching, and led me to start searching for myself. I start reading, speaking with others, and watch videos about Monsanto, and what they put in our food. Videos about Food & Drugs, and how they affect our body. As I did this research, I started seeing the connection of the food, medicine, chemicals, etc. and my body’s condition. I thought, WOW, that is why my body is not able to function properly. One thing let to another, and I went from being on 10-12 prescription meds over the last 17 yrs, and now I’ve only got 2 left to go. Over the past 2 years, gradually changed my “eating” lifestyle. Not perfect, but more & more aware of what I was reaching to accomplish. I have started eating healthy. No fast food, Avoid “processed foods”, watch labels on grocery store food- only buy non-gmo project verified (on the label) and/or Certified Organic. I am stopping all dairy products eventually, I use rice milk, and if I need a little cheese or yogurt/probiotic, half & half, now & then, I only get – grass-fed cows (certified organic, non-gmo products), and if you can get batch- pasteurized /non-homogenized is even better. Still trying to become completely gluten-free. Also, the past 3 weeks, I’ve been without sugar, potatoes, bread, rice, pasta or any carbs such as these, except the natural sugar in fresh fruit. My goal is to “get off” these last 2 meds and then I’ll be medicine free. Eating & juicing lots of fresh veggies and some some fruit, grain-free chicken, wild caught fish, seafood, some nuts & seeds, garlic, herbs & spices, vitamins & minerals. My body is healing itself because of the stuff that I’m now putting in & keeping out of it. It’s not a diet, I think of it as “Getting Back to the Basics”, and Living! I encourage everyone to to get involved, and start doing some research for yourself…..You are Worth It! I suggest watching the video on “Monsanto” for starters…… then about Food, Vitamin Deficiencies, Prescription Medicines, and how this affects the Body. I like Dr. Peter Osborne, he does several videos on prescription drugs and nutritional deficiencies.

I was diagnosed with Acid Reflux after 50 years of suffering with it. I read that 1 tbs of organic apple cider vinegar in a quart of water sipped throughout the day would help. It was amazing! I had relief almost immediately. That was two years ago and I feel great! To make it more palatable I add 1 packet of organic stevia per quart of water.

_QUERY_: I am suffering from acute bitterness in my mouth. When I get up in the morning my mouth tastes like bitter-poison. I rush to tooth-brush which relieves me for a while.
During the day when I become more active together with bitter taste in the mouth there arises white foamy bubbles. I try to spit often to get rid of both white foamy saliva & bitter taste. This has also affected my appetite and taste & I do not enjoy or relish whatever I eat.
Please suggest me the cause of this disease together with medicines & home remedies as well.
    Thanks- with regards-Tejinder Bakshi

I tried digestzen essential oil blend from DoTerra. It is amazing!

I just bought some raw unpasteurized honey. Will this help with acid reflux? I heard that honey and cinnamon are great for it. Does anyone here know how much I can use of this each day and when? I’ve read it can be taken by spoonful with a little bit of cinnamon sprinkled on top or made as a warm drink? Would anyone have any advice on this? What about unsweetened applesauce? I can’t take the PPI’s because of the side effects. I was put on carafate to help coat my throat as well as Zantac, but it’s not helping much. I can’t have an endoscopy done until August 26th to find out what’s going on, so I’m miserable! I’ve lost a lot of weight because I can’t eat much of anything without the reflux!! I’m basically living on oats with banana, cereal with banana and almond milk, white rice mixed with peas or broccoli, baked potatoes, graham crackers, baked or boiled chicken, sometimes apples and a lot of water. Thank you for any info!

  40. @Khali, Apple Cider Vinegar is known to help with Acid Reflux by balancing the acid production in the stomach. Take one teaspoon of organic ACV mixed in one glass of water once or twice daily (depending on your acidity levels). If it doesn’t help the first day, keep drinking it for at least 3 days. If it still doesn’t get better then it is best to visit your doctor. Apple Cider Vinegar doesn’t have any known side effects when used in moderation and as recommended. To learn more about side effects and health benefits of Apple Cider Vinegar, please take a look at this page
