Signs and Symptoms of High Blood Pressure

High blood pressure (also referred to as hypertension) is often called the “silent killer” since it is one of the leading risk factors associated with heart attacks, stroke, and kidney failure but it has no clearly identifiable symptoms. Since it is estimated that one in three adults in the USA suffer from high blood pressure, it is extremely important to get your blood pressure checked regularly by your doctor.

Although medication is often prescribed for serious cases of high blood pressure, most instances of the condition can easily be treated using a variety of everyday natural foods and simple lifestyle changes.

Causes of High Blood Pressure

While there is no single exact cause of high blood pressure or hypertension, a few risk factors have been recognized:

  • A regularly high intake of salt (exceeding 6 grams per day).
  • Excessively drinking alcohol (more than 2 drinks per day).
  • Regularly consuming large amounts of caffeine.
  • Obesity, since the heart has to pump more blood to supply the excess tissue.
  • Lack of aerobic exercise (such as walking, jogging, biking, or swimming).
  • Stress.
  • Hereditary (genetic) predisposition (for example, African Americans are more often susceptible to high blood pressure than Caucasians or Asians).

Home Remedies for High Blood Pressure

Celery

Research has shown that munching on celery can help to lower blood pressure. It turns out that compounds found in the oil of celery can relax and dilate the muscles that line the arteries, which helps to regulate blood pressure. Therefore, simply eating a few stalks of celery per day as a simple snack at lunch can help significantly.

Garlic

Garlic has also been known to help reduce high blood pressure. Although the exact reasons are still not clear, studies have shown that eating just a single clove a day (either raw or cooked) has a beneficial effect. An added bonus for eating garlic is that it is also known to reduce cholesterol. Therefore, regularly consuming garlic, either fresh or in capsule form, is a great way to reduce your risk of heart disease.

Potassium

Studies have shown that consuming potassium-rich foods can help to lower blood pressure. Good sources of potassium include bananas, oranges, spinach, and zucchini.

NOTE: If you are being treated for kidney failure, potassium rich foods can actually be harmful to you. Therefore, if this applies to you, consult your doctor first before trying this home remedy.

Black Seed Oil

Black seed oil contains a number of active ingredients that have been shown to help reduce cholesterol and control high blood pressure. Therefore, to reduce excess blood pressure simply take one teaspoon of Black Seed oil daily. Black Seed Oil can also be mixed into juice or tea if you don’t like the taste of the raw oil.

Ginkgo Biloba

Ginkgo Biloba is an herb which helps increase blood circulation in our bodies by dilating our blood vessels. Therefore, a simple remedy to lower blood pressure is to take 120mg of Ginkgo Biloba extract daily before any meal.

I have looked at a lot of sites on the web about home remedies and this one is the best by far that I have found. I just wanted to add that a mixture of honey and apple cider vinegar works wonders for a lot of things including lowering your blood pressure. Thank you again for your great website. Glen

Avoiding white stuff . The Doc are trying to figure out something they call syndrome X or metabolic disorder it is a combination obesity , diabetes and HTN and heart disease thing and it is aggravated by refined carbs , elevated blood sugar drives up the blood pressure which leads to the heart disease. So cut out the white stuff and add very mild exercise , i am talking walking for 20 minutes a day nothing stressful. I was 220/120 6 months ago and on a scary high dose of clonidine I am tapered down to .1 now.

  9. I am 32 year old female, 5 foot 9, 185lbs (but I am losing weight, though I am not anywhere near obese) HP runs in my family, my Mother and Father BOTH have high BP and are on medications. I take Metoprolol and Clonidine for my HP. I was (at resting) on average 165/102 with a pulse of 110. I am now on average (at rest) 133/89 with a pulse of 101. Now, the Metoprolol is suppose to keep my pulse around the 90’s so I am guessing it is not working so well. I drink lots of Chamomile tea, lots of Valerian root, take chinese herbs. I also have other health conditions so I am limited to what I can actually do (I get chronic migraines – headaches, fibromyalgia, ovarian cyst, anxiety, insomnia an duodenal ulcer)

I had a pre-mini stroke a while back alerting them to add a second medication (the metoprolol). I have suffered no side effects from that episode, but I get heart palpultations and pounding chest still on occassion because I can get almost stroke range with my BP. Good luck to all….

  15. @ Rose: Try eating 2-3 stalks of celery during the day and drink a cup of cinnamon tea first thing in the morning. To make cinnamon tea, you can boil a cinnamon stick in a cup of water for about 5 minutes and add a little bit of honey for taste if you want. It has helped my dad – I hope it helps you too!

my father’s blood pressure is not normal. What can i do?

  20. Anonymous

I have HBP but lately I am starting to believe that high blood pressure may be caused by fears, social phobias and the inability of the body to reset to its normal stress free state, because our attitude would not just accomodate. May be that is why Resperate would work,( I never use it and have no connection to it) As I learn to listen more the body my pressure has been lower. may be the scientist are aware of the that would explain the crazy dreams that we have when we accidently forget to take HBP medications.

  21. Everybodhi

I had high blood pressure, I was told to drink raw beet juice which I mix with carrot and apple, my blood pressure is not high as long as I drink this every day or two.

  22. Steve

Doug’s advice (2/18/2012) is the best. Diet can be used to modify high blood pressure (HBP).

But anyone who has HBP should also try RESPeRATE. It is a device you can order online (www.resperate.com) and it is a biofeedback relaxation device that you use to meditate with — listening to tones and modifying your breathing in accordance with the tones. Over time your blood pressure will moderate lower as you learn the technique, which serves to relax your blood vessels. Mayo Clinic has documented that it works. It has worked for me, and I am happily pill-free for six years now.

Hi everyone, I have been off bp meds now almost a year. From 190/107 and sometimes even higher, from calling 911 every week, to finding, what God gave me naturally. Garlic, prayer, Red Apple Cider, prayer, Celery, prayer, Common prayer, and now that you get the prayer part. Can I say that it works! I also breath the name of Jesus real slow 25 times, again real slow. I walk, or swim two or three times a week, check out my book please for more of what has happen. Email me.

Hi,last week i found out that I had high blood pressure(208/135).Dr put me under medications,Is there any way to replace them by natural food? Tks

  27. For those of you on prescribed blood pressure medications or cholesterol meds, you should read Is Your Cardiologist Killing You? by Sherry Rogers MD. All the more reason to find a natural remedy. Not only are there side effects to these ‘medicines’ but they don’t cure the heart, they artificially lower BP while doing untold damage to our bodies and shortening our lives.
Thanks to everyone who contributed natural remedies with foods and herbs, etc. Much appreciated.
To the woman with thinning hair, one cause may be your thyroid. Or lack of certain b complex vitamins. You can research thinning hair online for the Bs you may need to take extra but the Bs still need to be taken daily as a complex to get optimum results.

  29. Male, age 57, weight 205. BP was creeping up over past year or so (135/90). Injured shoulder in January and BP went way up (176/110). There was numbness, weakness and severe pain in injured arm. I suspect injury caused the big jump in BP although Nurse Practitioner said that was unlikely. As injury healed BP started coming back down but was still high (135/90). I began walking 1 hour almost everyday. Also began eating a diet consisting of mostly raw vegetables, fruit and nuts with grilled chicken, or fish several days a week. Breakfast is bowl of oatmeal, slice of multi-grain bread and 1 banana. Eliminated virtually all processed foods. Also reduced salt intake to below recommended 1500mg day. Now eating 1 cup of raw spinach 2 or 3 times a week. BP has dropped below 120/80. The effect spinach had on BP was immediate dropping from 126/88 to 110/82 the first day and is now below 120/80 everyday since. Bottom line: Exercise everyday, eliminate salt, eat abundant natural foods (vegetables, fruits, nuts) and include 1 cup raw spinach 2 or 3 times a week. Don’t overdo the spinach because doing so may cause kidney problems.

For my high blood pressure or hypertension, as well as celery, I eat Japanese/Chinese Shitake Mushrooms (pronounced “Sher-tarky.”) They are delicious cooked in a meal or soup and seem to lower my BP quite quickly. You can also get Shitake capsules at some chemists and nutrient stores, but I haven’t tried those yet. Avoid flavouring with common salt: instead use potassium-based salt substitute or low-salt soy sauce.
