Signs and Symptoms of High Blood Pressure

High blood pressure (also referred to as hypertension) is often called the “silent killer” since it is one of the leading risk factors associated with heart attacks, stroke, and kidney failure but it has no clearly identifiable symptoms. Since it is estimated that one in three adults in the USA suffer from high blood pressure, it is extremely important to get your blood pressure checked regularly by your doctor.

Although medication is often prescribed for serious cases of high blood pressure, most instances of the condition can easily be treated using a variety of everyday natural foods and simple lifestyle changes.

Causes of High Blood Pressure

While there is no single exact cause of high blood pressure or hypertension, a few risk factors have been recognized:

  • A regularly high intake of salt (exceeding 6 grams per day).
  • Excessively drinking alcohol (more than 2 drinks per day).
  • Regularly consuming large amounts of caffeine.
  • Obesity, since the heart has to pump more blood to supply the excess tissue.
  • Lack of aerobic exercise (such as walking, jogging, biking, or swimming).
  • Stress.
  • Hereditary (genetic) predisposition (for example, African Americans are more often susceptible to high blood pressure than Caucasians or Asians).

Home Remedies for High Blood Pressure

Celery

Research has shown that munching on celery can help to lower blood pressure. It turns out that compounds found in the oil of celery can relax and dilate the muscles that line the arteries, which helps to regulate blood pressure. Therefore, simply eating a few stalks of celery per day as a simple snack at lunch can help significantly.

Garlic

Garlic has also been known to help reduce high blood pressure. Although the exact reasons are still not clear, studies have shown that eating just a single clove a day (either raw or cooked) has a beneficial effect. An added bonus for eating garlic is that it is also known to reduce cholesterol. Therefore, regularly consuming garlic, either fresh or in capsule form, is a great way to reduce your risk of heart disease.

Potassium

Studies have shown that consuming potassium-rich foods can help to lower blood pressure. Good sources of potassium include bananas, oranges, spinach, and zucchini.

NOTE: If you are being treated for kidney failure, potassium rich foods can actually be harmful to you. Therefore, if this applies to you, consult your doctor first before trying this home remedy.

Black Seed Oil

Black seed oil contains a number of active ingredients that have been shown to help reduce cholesterol and control high blood pressure. Therefore, to reduce excess blood pressure simply take one teaspoon of Black Seed oil daily. Black Seed Oil can also be mixed into juice or tea if you don’t like the taste of the raw oil.

Ginkgo Biloba

Ginkgo Biloba is an herb which helps increase blood circulation in our bodies by dilating our blood vessels. Therefore, a simple remedy to lower blood pressure is to take 120mg of Ginkgo Biloba extract daily before any meal.

I read about you on the net – I am hypertensive. What can I do, in terms of diet and medication, to reduce it?

Shuaibu Nuhu, you don’t need to drink the vinegar the garlic cloves are soaked in. Simply take 2 garlic cloves out of the organic vinegar and eat them in the morning and 2 in the evening for a week. Reduce the amount to one clove in the morning and one in the evening, if you notice that blood pressure is becoming normal. Make sure to keep monitoring your BP. Hope it helps!

  15. Alferd

Ayi, you can soak as many garlic cloves in a jar of organic Apple Cider Vinegar or any other organic vinegar until they become soft. And consume two of these softened garlic cloves in the morning and two in the evening for a week. Keep monitoring your blood pressure and reduce the consumption to one clove in the morning and one clove in the evening if you notice that BP levels are lower. Also maintain a healthy diet and a heart-friendly exercise routine.

  16. Shuaibu Nuhu

Hi, I wanted to know for high blood pressure, should I take two garlic cloves with the vinegar they are soaked in or take only the garlic cloves? Thank you.

  17. Are we to soak the garlic in organic apple cider vinegar? How many garlic cloves are to be soaked and for how long? How many times daily they should be consumed?

My husband is in his early fifties and battling with blood pressure off and on and at times at night. The last test was 143/90. What home remedy do u recommend?

  22. Garlic is a blood thinner, water is a blood thinner, sea salt regulates water in the body, magnesium regulates calcium and keeps it out of soft tissue, (like heart and kidney issues). Msm makes skin and veins elastic with collagen, use it with vitamin C. Use them and your veins will love you. Coconut oil lowers blood sugars. Blessings , Kay

  23. Thanks for the good remedies. My doctor has placed me on numerous medication; some (Lipitor) which have caused me to develop Type II Diabetes. Please be aware that your physician has invested in or purchased stocks from companies like Pizer, Glaxo, etc. and everytime they place you on a drug, it increases their stocks (investments). So go with the natural remedies and stray from the chemicals which are doing more harm to our bodies than good. Thanks

  24. Take some garlic and put it in vinegar. When it becomes soft, start taking two cloves in the morning and two in the evening. Do this for one week and check your BP. If you see symptoms of low blood pressure, reduce the dose. If the remedy works at the end of the week, continue and reduce the dose slowly to about one or two cloves a week.

Hi, I worked night duty and every morning I checked my BP and it was always around156/95. Then I started taking raw celery and apple cider vinegar every morning on empty stomach. It’s a very effective remedy but I didn’t use them for longer period of time. I went to my doctor and he monitored my BP for 24 hours and the results showed very significant low BP. But after only two weeks, it’s back to high BP again. I was wondering if you could give me some advice on maintaining my Blood Pressure? My BP used to be around120/80 and would go up only sometimes but would come back to normal by itself. Now it’s always high. I ate a lot of celery and everything that helps lower blood pressure but nothing seems to be working. Thank you very much in advance!

Hi there, my blood pressure was 110/190. I went to hospital three times and was close to die. My blood pressure is now 75/125 after I took 12,000 mg or 12 gm of Vitamin C a day. But when I was sick, I took up to 18 gm a day. So take plenty of Vitamins especially Vitamin C. All the best!

  27. You should go to the doctor! And stop drinking anything with caffeine, and stop using salt. Chew on celery and do go to the doctor!

If any of you have high blood pressure , stay away from Rosemary essential oil , or anything with Rosemary oil in it. It has an effect on blood pressure. I have high blood pressure and someone told me rosemary oil is good for thinning hair and your scalp. I looked it up but didn’t find anything warning about its effects on blood pressure. I put some in my shampoo and washed my hair and let it soak in while I showered that evening. The next morning I woke up feeling terrible. I checked my blood pressure and it had shot up to 220/128 !!! Up to that point my BP was stable and was never that high. It almost killed myself. I was rushed to the emergency room. Later on I did more research on more sites and found that it does have an effect on blood pressure. So don’t believe half the crap that you read about all things being all natural are good for you. Do your research yourself!

  31. Please help me out! My blood pressure is 200+. I will be thankful for your advice!

My blood sugar level was 5.7 last month and my blood pressure 120 / 89 normal ! OK FOLKS, HERE IT IS, TURMERIC: it’s good for stopping the spread of cancer, curing diabetes, regulating blood pressure and blood sugar. BEETROOT JUICE is good for high blood pressure. Doctors work for big pharma and they want you to be popping pills all your life for your sickness and their profit, oh and they withhold cures too. IT’S TIME TO END THIS CRIME.

  44. Robert B.

I’m beginning to think high blood pressure is a scam. I have had high blood pressure most of my life or so I’m told. I was prescribed. 3 pills Adah. Then about 6 years ago I stopped taking them all together. Funny enough when my blood pressure is “normal” I feel very dizzy. But when my blood pressure IS normal, normal for me I feel fine. My blood pressure is usually 145/95. Also the fact that doctors keep changing what is “normal”, also when you’re in the doctors office and ask the doctor what is the normal blood pressure range they never tell you.

  45. I have been a diabetic since 2000 when I moved to Australia I began taking medication. Needless to say, I havent exactly been taking good care of myself until a couple of years ago, when I started first, solely a vegetable diet then a high protein and very low carb diet believing that it was doing me a great deal of good health……’NEK MINIT’ not at all!!! When up to about two months ago I spent approximately 5 weeks just eating anything and everything without medication because I couldnt afford them. Then I discovered the “vegan-way-of-life” and Dr Neal Barnard “my saviour” who explains about the importance of including “good carbohydrates” and “good proteins” with plenty of vegetables and fruits in your everyday meal plan. We, as Type2 diabetics tend to produce insulin but are insulin resistant, now after a great deal of recorded research on people in varying stages of diabetes, has discovered that we suffer from “intramyocellular lipids, which simply means intra=inside myo=muscle cellular=cells lipids=fat; fat in muscle cells. When the fat was reduced or eliminated the reduction of the blood pressure is significant. Today I have started taking medication for blood sugar and blood pressure I will update how I progress with the meds or a reduction of the meds. Watch this space!!! Aslo read Dr Neal Barnards book.

I am 18 weeks pregnant and stopped taking my med on my own. I am on for 1.5 week. I don’t feel at ease with both decisions( staying on, getting off). My machine indicates over the past 3 days and at my Dr.s appt. 2 days ago, I am within the normal range. Am I right for stopping meds and looking towards more holistic, but safe remedies? Help!
