What is Oil of Oregano?

Oil of Oregano is a highly potent natural purifier that is extracted from wild oregano plants, and two key compounds found in it are carvacrol and thymol. Studies have shown that both of these compounds have significant effects on harmful micro-organisms that cause many illnesses in humans.

It is important not to confuse Oil of Oregano with common oregano that is used as a spice for cooking. Common oregano is typically Origanum Marjoram, while Oil of Oregano is derived from Origanum Vulgare.

Oil of Oregano can be purchased as either a liquid or as capsules/tablets. In both forms, it is important to verify that the oil is derived from the proper potent oregano plant, and that the carvacrol concentration is at least 70%.

What are the Health Benefits?

The ancient Greeks were one of the first people to recognize this oil for its health benefits and medicinal qualities. It is known to be a potent antiviral, antibacterial, antifungal, and antiparasitic oil that can reduce pain and inflammation and effectively fight off infections 2.

Some of the specific benefits of this amazing oil are:

  • Destroying organisms that contribute to skin infections and digestive problems.
  • Strengthening the immune system.
  • Increasing joint and muscle flexibility.
  • Improving respiratory health.

Natural Remedies Using Oil of Oregano

Skin Infections

Oil of Oregano can be applied directly onto the skin to treat itches, skin infections, such as boils and carbuncles, acne etc., and irritated gums, but only if it has been diluted. Always follow the instructions on your particular bottle before applying topically onto the skin, since highly concentrated oils may first need to be mixed with Olive Oil or Coconut Oil before application (usually one teaspoon of Olive Oil or Coconut Oil per one drop of Oregano Oil).

Digestive Problems

The high concentrations of thymol and carvacrol in Oil of Oregano have been shown to calm upset stomach or diarrhea and aid digestion. Therefore, a quick home remedy for mild indigestion is to drink a glass of juice that is mixed with 2 or 3 drops of the oil.

Sinus Congestion

Oil of Oregano is a wonderful natural remedy for sinus congestion. A common solution is to add 3 drops of the oil into a glass of juice and drink this mixture daily for 3 to 5 days or you may take it under your tongue, only if you can handle the spice.

Colds and Sore Throats

Oil of Oregano is an excellent early defense mechanism when you feel a cold or sore throat coming on. Simply take 3 drops of the oil under your tongue once per day (you can mix it into a glass of orange juice) and you should notice results within a few hours. Repeat this once per day for up to 5 days until the symptoms are gone.

What are the Side Effects?

While Oil of Oregano has many benefits, there are a few possible side effects:

  • It may reduce the body’s ability to absorb iron. Therefore, it is recommended that any regular use be combined with regular consumption of iron supplements. For this reason, women are advised not to take this oil during their pregnancy.
  • Pregnant women should also avoid this oil since it can stimulate blood flow in the uterus, which can weaken the lining that surrounds the fetus in the womb.
  • People that have allergies to thyme, basil, mint, or sage may be sensitive to Oregano Oil as well, since they are in the same family of plants. If any skin irritation, rashes, or vomiting occurs when using it, it is recommended that you discontinue use and consult your doctor.

Where and How to Buy Oil of Oregano

Oil of Oregano can be found in almost any natural health or nutrition store, or from online retailers such as Amazon.com (see below). It is important to make sure that it is derived from Origanum Vulgare, and that the carvacrol concentration is at least 70%.

I am 57 years old. Should I take oil of Oregano or ask my doctor first?

  2. Trish

The herb you buy at the grocery store is likely mixed with marjoram but the oregano you grow at home is definitely the same stuff. I think it is a bit misleading to suggest to people that they cannot obtain the whole leaf oregano (Origanum Vulgare) that comes in the oil. I have used whole leaf oregano (Origanum Vulgare) that I have grown, for years. I use it in cooking and also when some illness is going around or for possible food poisoning or bad food whichever you care to call it. It has personally worked for me. If I have gone out to eat and am nauseated shortly after, I take about 6 to 10 tiny oregano leaves either with honey or lemon juice in a few ounces of purified water or apple juice or something like that and it helps.

Will it kill head and body lice, ticks, red bugs, bed bugs and chiggers? Please advise.

I arrived in Australia a month ago to visit my sister. The Air conditioning on the plane during eighteen hour flight took its toll. I had runny eyes, no voice and cough – felt dreadful. My sister gave me Oregano oil three times a day in water. It worked and three days later I was fine. Just got back home. I will now order some to have on hand. It seems to work for so many ailments. The many comments here about this wonder oil are really informative and encouraging. Hildy c.

Trying Oregano Oil today for Sinusitis!

  6. Gibe, I also experienced bad breath for many years along with digestive and sinus problems. And nothing worked until I started brushing with coconut oil, 2-drops of oil of Oregano(83%-85% Carvacol) and melaluca(tea tree oil) toothpaste. I am much better now. I also took coconut oil – 2 or more tablespoons a day. It helped rid of morning breath as well. These all have antibacterial and antifungal properties. Hope this helps somebody else to have some relief from their suffering.

  7. Health

There are many health benefits of coconut oil apart from hair care. It is useful for stress relief, weight loss, heart diseases, and boosts your immune system, maintains your cholesterol level, helps with digestion and much more.

  8. Leslie

@Gibe, Supposedly Oil of Oregano is antibacterial, antifungal and antiparasitic. I take it for any kind of skin infection, cold, cough, traveler’s diarrhea and yeast infections. I think there’s no harm in giving it a try. Taking 3-4 drops of organic oil of oregano with about 70% of carvacrol ingredient twice daily helps. It has a bitter/spicy and strong oregano taste, so take it under the tongue and swallow it with water or juice. For Candida, incorporating probiotics in your diet, either through yogurt or supplements, helps too.

  9. I have seen all comments but none answers my question because some of the comments are suggestions and my question is, can this oil of oregano help me eliminate my bad breath because of candida? So if you are sure it will help, please let me know within short amount of time. Because I am suffering from bad breath which comes from my stomach and some people have told me that it may be H.pylori bacteria or candida. So I want to try this oil but before I try I want to be sure about the oil and its side effects.

To all of you out there Oil of Oregano really works – from colds to UTI to hangovers. It is amazing!

  11. Fresh garlic has significant antibacterial and antifungal properties. The only way to use fresh garlic is to – cut the stems off, crush well and remove peel, chop and crush again then take it on an Empty Stomach and wash down with about 1/4 cup of water.

  13. Diane

I have been diagnosed with candida (fungus) in my esophagus, I also had H-Pylori bacteria in my stomach. I had one round of anti fungal meds and one round of antibiotics for my stomach. The latest endoscopy showed more fungus. I also have asthma and chronic bronchitis. I just started taking a high quality capsule or 2 of oil of oregano. Do you find it really works on the fungus and have you had the experience of respiratory involvement? If positive, how long did it take to notice a change?

  14. Terrie Maloy

  17. Jamin health

I just started taking Oil of Oregano as I’ve heard about its medicinal value for so many years. I make up a solution for a dental issue and add a couple drops of Oil of Oregano to this. It’s keeping me pain free for a couple of months now. I don’t want anymore major dental work.

  18. I prefer adding 3 drops of Oil of Oregano to one tablespoon of olive oil or at least 8 drops to 1/4 cup of olive oil and rub it in over sore or achy muscles, and legs in general. My arthritic fingers and the aches and pains are gone almost immediately. Oil of Oregano is a miracle oil for me.

  19. Heather

Amercel, you can buy Oil of Oregano from pretty much any natural or herbal food store. To know what to look for when buying Oil of Oregano, it says above on this page that it should contain 70% carvacrol component. Also read “Where and how to buy oil of oregano” section on this page. It explains it well.

  21. Marysia

How long and how offen did you take oil of Oregano to cure candida??

  22. Amercel

How and where can I buy oregano oil?

  23. Dorrie

I agree with trying the Oregano oil. The dermetologist was unsuccessful in helping cure my candida, till I researched remedies myself and came across oregano oil, and like never before, super results! It’s an amazing oil.

  24. Hoppie

I believe that you should try oil of oregano instead of wasting money on a doctor’s visit. The more we use natural remedies, the more we rely on our own instinct and less on others. You know how you feel and not anybody else.

  25. Cringleberry

You should eat lots of organic butter with garlic. The Oregano oil can be applied. Do this a few times a day and you will see the results.

  26. Nicole

Interstitial cystitis, I had the same thing – I was diagnosed with this.

  27. Paulette

I had colonoscopy two hours ago, have chronic colitis, divaticalosis. I take probiotics daily however I find myself still with upset stomach or constipated. Took one oil of Olay pill today and will see if this will help.

To Elly, What was the eyes problem, if you don’t mind me asking and how did you use oil of oregano for eyes. And how did you use oregano oil to lose the unexpected weight of 8 Lbs?. THANK YOU, LOOK FORWARD TO HEARING BACK FROM YOU!! GOD BLESS!!

  30. Healthnut

Oil of Oregano is one of the most wonderful natural products available out there. Doctors, specialists, and emergency, all dismissed my infection as hives. It took many months but I have cleaned up my body and Oregano oil was one of the products I used. Listen to your body people, don’t let the doctors tell you that there’s nothing wrong or send you off with a prescription that will not work.

  31. Asseffa,
Please! Have your kidneys checked, do a creatinine panel test.

  32. Aseffa – in response to your post about Urinary Tract Infection – You need to try D-Mannose. You can get it from Health Stores or from Amazon. I take a few when I feel one coming on and continue to take 2 or 3 capsules a couple of times a day until I feel better. It has been a life saver for me.

  33. Traci Rambi

You might be overly acidic. Try a diet which includes several cups of green leafy vegetables a day.

  34. Wenga

@ Aseffa, oil of Oregano acts as a natural antibiotic. If you have UTI, try taking 3-4 drops of organic oregano oil daily for about a month. Also drink 1-2 glasses of cranberry juice every day. Make sure to drink plenty of water too.

  35. Donna

I used super strength oil of Oregano on my dogs ear mites that he had for 3 weeks. I put oil of oregano in a sprayer bottle, then added a teaspoon or two of water, shook it up and sprayed his ears twice a day. The ear mites went away in 2 days.

  36. Aseffa

I have pain when I pee most of the time. Doctors keep telling me that it is urinary infection. I took antibiotics but it keeps coming back. Would Oregano oil help me if I took it. Please let me know, I need help.

  37. Jimmy

@ I. Smith, I wouldn’t put full strength oil of Oregano on face. It is a very strong oil which might cause burning sensation. I think it’s better to dilute it a bit in olive oil in the beginning and slowly increase the amount of oregano oil.

  38. I have had wonderful results with Oil of Oregano. Got rid of my heartburn, psoriasis type skin lesions, eye problem called photophobia, and without even trying I have lost 8 pounds. I am assuming it is because it has gotten rid of the yeast infection I had and it allows my stomach and body to perform as it should. I haven’t even exercised and have only cut back a little bit on food. This Oregano oil is great!

  39. l.smith

Can oil of oregano be used for Rosecea? I was told to put it on face at night full strength.

  40. Denise

would you recommend oil of Oregano for Hemochromatosis?

  42. Mary, where did you buy the organic oregano oil?

  43. Teressa

I just read on an oil site that Oregano is HIGH in Iron, so why would the body not absorb it? thank you!

  44. sherri amirpour

Hi, I have a problem. I accidently drank Oregano Oil for skin. Now I have stomach ache. Can you please help me – what can I do fast?

  45. Tranda

@ Coopus, Oil of Oregano is a natural immune booster. I think you should give it a try and see if it makes you feel any better. The only thing you need to be careful about is your iron levels. Oregano oil, in some people, reduces body’s ability to absorb iron. Anyway, you should definitely give it a shot and ask your doctor before taking it too. Good luck!

  46. Beeran, stop taking the oil, if you feel like vomiting every time you take it. Don’t force against what your body is telling you.

  47. Coopsus

Can Oil of Oregano help with lupus? Lupus is an immune deficiency disease.

  48. Miri Roth

Started taking one capsule a few days ago – feels like I’m going to vomit each time I take it.
