Signs and Symptoms of Cellulite

Cellulite

Cellulite is a common, benign skin condition that can affect people of all ages and sexes. However, it is far more prevalent in women, affecting up to 80–90% of adult women to some degree. Cellulite is characterized by a dimpled, uneven, or “orange-peel” appearance of the skin, most commonly seen on the thighs, hips, buttocks, and abdomen.

This appearance occurs due to the interaction between subcutaneous fat deposits, connective tissue (fibrous septae), and skin structure in these areas. Common symptoms associated with cellulite may include skin laxity, mild tenderness, or a feeling of tightness, which can be more noticeable while standing or when pressure is applied.

Causes of Cellulite

The female hormones Estrogen and Progesterone play a major role in the development of cellulite. Estrogen is the primary driver; it encourages the body to store fat around the buttocks, thighs, and hips while also influencing the breakdown of collagen in the skin. Progesterone also contributes by promoting fluid retention and affecting vein health, which can make the skin appear less firm.

Other contributing factors include genetics, which determine your skin structure and fat distribution, as well as pregnancy and stress. Lifestyle choices such as smoking, lack of exercise, and obesity can also worsen the appearance of cellulite. Notably, while gentle massage can help circulation, rough or harsh massages can actually damage the skin’s connective tissue, potentially making the dimpling more noticeable.

Home Remedies and Natural Treatments for Cellulite

Cellulite Home Remedy Using Apple Cider Vinegar

Cellulite before and after

The nutritional components of Apple Cider Vinegar have been known to help reduce the appearance of cellulite.

Oral Remedy

  • Mix 2 tablespoons of apple cider vinegar into an 8 ounce glass of water.
  • Optionally add a small amount of honey as a sweetener.
  • Drink this once each morning.

Topical Remedy

  • Mix 3 parts apple cider vinegar with one part of your favorite massage oil.
  • Gently massage this solution onto affected skin areas twice daily.
  • This may help to reduce the appearance of cellulite.

Exercise to Reduce Cellulite

While cellulite involves fat, it is primarily caused by fat cells pushing through the connective tissue under the skin. Excess weight can make it more visible, which is why staying active is so beneficial. Physical exercises—such as walking, jogging, swimming, jumping on a mini-trampoline, and yoga—are effective ways to manage stress and improve the appearance of skin. Other great options include weight lifting, martial arts, and dancing, which help by toning the muscle beneath the skin. Aim for at least 20 minutes of exercise per day, five days a week. This helps improve circulation and keeps your body chemistry balanced, making the development of cellulite less likely.

Eating a Low-fat Balanced Diet

A balanced diet plays an important role in managing the appearance of cellulite. Focus on fiber-rich foods, such as oats and whole grains, which help the body process waste efficiently. Fruits and vegetables—including asparagus, avocados, bananas, and broccoli—are excellent choices because they are high in potassium and antioxidants, which help reduce water retention and protect skin cells. Aim for at least five servings of these daily.

Supplements like fish oil, ginkgo biloba, and soy lecithin can also be beneficial. These help by supporting healthy circulation, protecting cells from damage, and maintaining the strength of cell membranes.

To keep your skin looking firm, it is best to limit alcohol, excessive sugar, and smoking, as these can damage collagen and restrict blood flow. Additionally, reducing salt intake is vital, as excess salt causes the body to hold onto water, making cellulite appear more prominent. While drinking excessive caffeine can lead to dehydration, topical caffeine is often used to temporarily tighten the skin.

Laser Treatment for Cellulite

Studies have shown that different types of laser treatments may also help manage the appearance of cellulite.

In the past, I drank ACV straight out of a shot glass. I then visited my dentist, who said that the enamel on my teeth was wearing away. It’s a good idea to mix ACV with another liquid and not drink it straight undiluted.

  2. For Cellulite, try squeezing a fresh lemon in a cold glass of water. You may also add natural honey or Stevia to sweeten it.

  3. I use seaweed soap from Baudelaire (Bath soap sea loofa) for cellulite. This soap works for me, try it.

@Gayatri, If Apple Cider Vinegar is not working for you, try taking ACV in capsule form. There is no scientific evidence available on the topical use of ACV for weight loss. However, the topical use of Apple Cider Vinegar may help with some skin disorders. Hope it helps!

Okay, So maybe it is only me who would have vomited it out after the oral consumption. ACV actually didn’t suit me, even after several attempts but since I HAVE TO get rid of the fat, would a massage help as much as oral consumption?

ACV works like magic! After suffering from IBS, Candida, Yeast Infection, Constipation, uncontrollable cravings and mood swings for the longest time ever, now after usinng ACV, I can safely say I have my health back. Only started taking Apple Cider Vinegar a month ago and I feel like a million dollars. I love love love this product. Truly effective!

I used DermalMD Cellulite Cream last year for about 5 months, it works great. You will see results within less than 2 weeks but it must be used 2x per day. I work in fitness industry so obviously I exercise frequently and eat well, even with all that some cellulite still makes itself known. I’m not gonna say that it gets rid of it 100% but it comes very close and is by far the best topical cream I have come across. I recommend using it with a cellulite brush daily as well for even better results. A little bit goes a long way especially if your skin is moist.

I started taking ACV (Braggs, with the mother), mixed with locally produced raw organic unfiltered, unheated honey, and organic lemon juice (ReaLemon does not work) at the end of September 2015 due to severe excess stomach. First thing every morning, before eating, drinking, or brushing my teeth, I took 1 cup of warm (not hot) water, 1 TBSP ACV, 1 TBSP lemon juice, and 1-1/2 tsp honey. Within 2 days my excess acid problems were gone (after 36 years of taking some type of antacid every day). A side benefit I hadn’t realized was, this drink also helps heal your gut, and helps your body systems (thyroid, adrenal) get back to normal. I have also lost 45 lbs since September 2015, a benefit I didn’t know about! I have always followed a healthy eating plan, including exercise, but had not been able to lose any weight. The weight loss happened very quickly at first, and has now slowed down to an average of 2-3 lbs per month, which is the better way to lose weight. I have to say, I feel like a whole new person! Many of my allergies seem to have disappeared. I did not have any episodes of pneumonia or bronchitis this past winter, where I would normally have at least 1 bout or more of each every winter, and sometimes also during other seasons.

I drink ACV straight out of a shot glass. Seems to go down a little easier for me. Then after 2 or 3 minutes I drink 8oz of wàter.

Dermalmd Cellulite Cream is the best product for your cellulite, I have been exercising and putting this cream after my workouts and my legs feel so tight and smooth! It automatically absorbs into your body. It has a FREEZING feeling.

  13. Wendy

Beth, ACV or any other vinegar should never be taken without diluting it because it can burn your esophagus. I understand taking one tsp of ACV in one shot vs. mixed in a glass of water seems easy but it’s not gonna be good. I learned it the hard way 😉

  14. Do you have to mix the ACV in water or can you take the ACV straight? I would rather take it like a dose of medicine and get it over with!

  15. Nikkole

I take ACV mixed in water and drink a glass of lemon water regularly in the mornings before I have my meal. I use Braggs only with the ‘mother’ in it. I also take it before each meal. I have noticed my stomach flattening when I wrap it before taking a walk. I was in an accident 2 and a half years ago and I dislocated my left knee and both of my ankles were broken. I’m just getting back on my feet – because I gained a lot of weight being stagnant. I have noticed my thighs are slimmer and dimples in my legs are going away slowly. It’s been only about a month taking it now.

  16. Danielle

Hello, for those girls who are given the great news of flat tummy, I have some questions:
1- I would like to know the regularity of the intake and the best time to take ACV.
2- The ACV you’re referring to is the one with its “Mother”?
    Thank you in advance!

  17. Kristy

@Tlarus, taking any ACV pills/caps made by a reputable company should be okay for weight loss. But I noticed that instead of pills, drinking 1tsp of organic apple cider vinegar mixed in a glass of water twice daily worked better for me. Hope it helps!

  18. Tlarus

Which apple cider vineger pills can help me to slim my big butt, hips and thighs?

  19. Ujwala Kamble

When should ACV be taken to get rid of cellulite permanently?

  20. Gjones

@Ujwala, ACV is supposed to be taken on an empty stomach for Cellulite.

Food additives and chemical sweeteners can negatively impact a woman’s hormones. And the hormones are responsible for skin tone, skin texture and firmness & shape. There is also an effect on body-fat and flab. All this is directly related to the appearance of cellulite on the lower body trouble-spots and problem areas. So, you want to avoid as many food additives and chemicals as possible. Here are some ingredients to avoid:
    1 – Aspartame, 2 – Acesulfame Potassium (ace-K, as-k), 3 – Sucralose, 4 – MSG (monosodium glutamate)

  22. Heidi

Hi, I have been taking ACV for a few weeks now, due to a terrible gluten flare up and also for all its other health benefits which I’m reading about in addition to losing a few pounds. I too notice that it’s helping and settling my tummy and also flattening it. I hope I can continue to take it, not sure how long one can keep this up since it is very acidic. Thanks for all for your help and for the comments. :-))

  23. Laura

Are you drinking the AC vinegar in the mornings or after each meal? And are you on any special diet too?

  24. Kritikoukla

Soy causes migraines. I am very sensitive to soy. When you’ve check labels, you wouldn’t believe how many pre-packaged foods contain soy in different forms – Tuna, saltine crackers, lots of dressings and so many other products.

  25. Sabrina. Allard

How do you know that you have thyroid problem that makes you gain weight?

  26. I’ve been drinking a tablespoon of apple cider vinegar and 2 oz. of water for about a month. I’ve definitely noticed a difference in my stomach-it’s getting flatter. I’m also taking it to help with my hypothyroidism. I’ll keep you posted on my results.

  27. René

It’s caused by too much estrogen and progesterone. Women also have small circulating levels of testosterone and that is what the “experts” say, helps to reduce the appearance of cellulite by helping maintain and build muscle mass. Don’t let that scare you because women could never have enough of the male hormone, testosterone, in their body to get big and bulky – not naturally at least. Or without some type of endocrine disease.

  28. Milly

What is this diet exactly? I would like to try it. Please help?

  29. Cindy

In regards to the first part of the article, Is it lack of progesterone and estrogen or too much of the hormones?

  30. Sierra

Actually all soy is a gmo. Monsanto (the agricultural company) made sure that farmers cannot get any kind of soy beans besides the gmos. Anything they tell you otherwise is just marketing bull crap.

  31. Michelle

Eating a low-fat diet is mentioned, but also eating a healthy, low-carb diet works. In this diet I actually make sure to get a good bit of healthy fats. This is what I’ve been doing for a few months now and my cellulite has disappeared.

  32. Jo Anne

Google “soy and Thyroid”. Also,”fluoride and thyroid”. Interesting reading!

  33. Sara Lynn

Although this seems counterintuitive, we get acid problems from highly acidic foods because we are actually low in natural stomach acidity. Apple Cider vinegar actually adds that acidity back in and brings a ph balance to our stomachs. When I feel gassy in my stomach or have indigestion a Tbsp of vinegar in 6-8 oz of water settles it right down. Give your body a bit of time to get used to the process.

  34. Helen

Angie, I wouldn’t recommend unfermented soy products to ANYONE. It can cause serious thyroid problems and worse. Do a google search on Soy side effects – you might be shocked. Everyone needs to be warned, because it is in so many health products, like aspartame, which is a neurotoxin. It’s ridiculous the way products are marketed as healthy when they are far from it.

  35. Check your thyroid levels too ladies. I went to doctor to see what was causing weight gain. No matter what I did (nutrisystem, weight lifting, cardio and drinking a gallon of water a day), I wasn’t losing weight. My doctor did bloodwork and found out that I needed thyroid medicine.

  36. Jennifer

Have you tried Apple Cider Vinegar and found that your stomach can’t handle it? I was just wondering because it actually helps settle my husband’s stomach.
