What is Apple Cider Vinegar?

Apple Cider Vinegar (ACV) is an effective natural bacteria-fighting agent that contains many vital minerals and trace elements such as potassium, calcium, magnesium, phosphorous, chlorine, sodium, sulfur, copper, iron, silicon and fluorine that are vital for a healthy body.

Natural Apple Cider Vinegar is made by crushing fresh, organically grown apples and allowing them to mature in wooden barrels. This boosts the natural fermentation qualities of the crushed apples, which differs from the refined and distilled vinegars found in supermarkets. When the vinegar is mature, it contains a dark, cloudy, web-like bacterial foam called mother, which becomes visible when the rich brownish liquid is held to the light. The mother can be used to add to other vinegar to hasten maturity for making more Apple Cider Vinegar. Natural vinegars that contain the mother have enzymes and minerals that other vinegars in grocery stores may not have due to over-processing, over-heating, and filtration. For this reason, it is recommended that you purchase only Natural Apple Cider Vinegar, with an ideal acidity (pH) level of 5 to 7.

What are the Benefits?

Natural Apple Cider Vinegar is a wonderful natural treatment for a number of ailments which usually require medications that might have a number of side effects. In particular, it has been known to:

  • Reduce sinus infections and sore throats
  • Balance high cholesterol
  • Treat skin conditions such as acne
  • Protect against food poisoning
  • Fight allergies in both humans and animals
  • Prevent muscle fatigue after exercise
  • Strengthen the immune system
  • Increase stamina
  • Increase metabolism which promotes weight loss
  • Improve digestion and cure constipation
  • Alleviate symptoms of arthritis and gout
  • Prevents bladder stones and urinary tract infections

Common Remedies Using ACV

Acid Reflux and Heartburn

One of the best known natural remedies using Apple Cider Vinegar is for acid reflux and heartburn. Just add 1 teaspoon of apple cider vinegar to 1 glass of water and sip this while eating a meal or five minutes before eating any meal.

Sore Throat

The acidic environment created by apple cider vinegar makes it an effective remedy for sore throats. Simply mix 1/2 tsp of ACV with 1/4 cup of warm water, and gargle this mixture for 30 seconds once per hour. The acetic acid in the vinegar helps to fight against bacteria and other foreign bodies that may be causing the sore throat.

Weight Loss

Many people turn to apple cider vinegar (ACV) because it’s known to promote weight loss by giving our metabolism a gentle boost in the right direction. The acetic acid in ACV can help slow the way our body processes carbs, meaning our system releases sugar into the bloodstream more gradually instead of in large spikes. With fewer sugar surges and crashes, our body is less likely to store excess carbs in the liver as fat. This steadier energy curve can also help curb cravings and keep our appetite under control, making it easier to stick to healthier eating habits. While ACV isn’t a magic fix, several studies and clinical trials suggest that adding at least one tablespoon of organic ACV to a daily routine can give an extra edge in the weight-loss journey. A simple approach is to mix one tablespoon of apple cider vinegar with a pinch of salt in a large glass of water and sip it with a straw 5–10 minutes before breakfast or any other meal—or gradually throughout the day.

Bad Breath

Apple cider vinegar (ACV) is a natural hero for fresh breath! The acetic acid and antibacterial properties in ACV can help neutralize odor-causing bacteria in the mouth while balancing the mouth’s pH to prevent lingering odors, making it an effective remedy for bad breath or halitosis. Beyond freshening breath, ACV can support overall oral health by gently breaking down plaque and promoting a healthy environment for our teeth and gums. Incorporating a small amount of ACV into our daily routine—diluted in water as a quick rinse or sipped carefully—offers a natural, simple, and effective way to keep our breath smelling great while boosting oral wellness. Simple remedy is to add 1/2 teaspoon of ACV to a cup of water and gargle with the mixture for 10 seconds at a time until the cup is empty.

Body Odor

Apple Cider Vinegar is an effective body odor remedy, since it can help adjust the skin’s pH level which helps to eliminate odor-causing bacteria. For armpit odor, simply wipe them once each evening with undiluted vinegar (using a cotton ball). For foot odor, fill a pan with warm water and add 1/3 cup of ACV, then let your feet soak in this mixture for 15 minutes once per week.

Hiccups

A common folk remedy for hiccups is to mix 1 teaspoon of apple cider vinegar into a glass of water. Drink this mixture slowly and your hiccups should stop within a few seconds. While there is no scientific proof that vinegar is an effective treatment, the theory is that the sour taste of the vinegar helps distract the brain with some other stimulation so that the involuntary spasms causing the hiccups will cease. Next time you have the hiccups, trying this vinegar hiccup remedy is certainly worth a try.

Skin Problems and Infections

Acne

Apple Cider Vinegar is known as an excellent natural treatment for acne since it can absorb excess oil from our skin as well as kill bacteria that often result in acne. You can create an effective acne solution by combining one part of the vinegar to 4 parts of water or the solution can be diluted at 1:5 ratio for sensitive skin. Using a clean cotton pad or cotton ball, apply the solution directly onto the affected areas of your skin and leave it on for 10 minutes. You can then rinse your face with water. Repeat this 3 times per day.

Age Spots

Apple cider vinegar (ACV) is widely used to lighten age spots as it contains malic and acetic acids, which act like gentle chemical exfoliants. By loosening the bonds between dead surface cells, they can help fade superficial hyperpigmentation (age spots/sunspots) over time. An effective remedy is to combine the vinegar with onion juice as follows:

  • Blend an onion in a blender, and use a strainer to extract the juice into a small glass or bowl.
  • In a separate bowl, mix one part of onion juice and one part of apple cider vinegar, 5 parts of distilled water together.
  • Apply the diluted solution to the affected areas with a cotton pad. Always patch test first.
  • Start by leaving it on for 5 minutes, and if your skin tolerates it well, you can gradually increase the time up to 15–20 minutes before rinsing.

Another simple remedy is to mix 1 part ACV with 8–10 parts water (e.g., ½ tsp ACV + 4–5 tsp water). Patch test first. Dab the diluted solution onto the dark spot, leave 1–2 minutes the first time (up to 5 minutes max if tolerated), then rinse and moisturize. Use 3 times per week, not daily. Always wear broad-spectrum SPF 30+, as exfoliation increases sun sensitivity. Stop using it if stinging, redness, or darkening occurs—especially on sensitive or darker skin tones prone to PIH.

Cellulite

Many women have found that ACV can help reduce the appearance of cellulite. You can create a potent massage oil with the vinegar as follows:

  • In a small bowl, add 3 parts of apple cider vinegar to one part of any regular massage oil and mix.
  • Gently massage this solution onto the areas affected by cellulite.
  • Repeat this twice daily, ideally once in the morning and once before bed.
  • Also drinking a mix of 1 tsp of organic ACV and 1 glass of water in the morning on an empty stomach can help with the appearance of cellulite.

Yeast Infection

ACV has been found to be an effective treatment for yeast infections. A simple remedy is to mix 1 1/2 cups of the vinegar into a bathtub filled with luke warm water, and soak in this mixture for 20 minutes. Repeat this once per day for 3 days. This remedy is most effective when used within the first few days of the onset of a yeast infection.

Stomach Problems

Constipation

Apple Cider Vinegar is frequently used as a natural treatment for constipation. To treat this common digestive problem, mix 1 teaspoon of ACV into a glass of water, and drink this mixture three times a day. If you find the taste to be strong, you can alternatively mix the vinegar with a glass of apple juice or grape juice.

Diarrhea

There are various causes for diarrhea, and although it should not be left untreated, it is often a natural way for the body to rid itself of harmful compounds and ingested materials. Apple Cider Vinegar is a fantastic natural remedy for diarrhea since the high pectin concentration acts as a protective coating which soothes the irritated lining of the colon. A suggestion is to add 1-2 teaspoons of the vinegar to a large glass of water, and drink this 3 times daily while the symptoms persist.

Major Illnesses

Diabetes

Recent studies suggest that Apple Cider Vinegar may help to control high blood sugar levels. Therefore it is not surprising that ACV is often used as a natural treatment for Diabetes. A suggested remedy is to mix 2 teaspoons of the vinegar and a pinch of salt into a glass of water, and drink this before each meal. This drink may help reduce the body’s glucose response to the carbohydrate load in the meal that is to follow.

What are the Side Effects?

There are no major known side effects of ACV when used in moderation. However, drinking vinegars, acids or even lemon juices on a regular basis can lead to a deterioration of dental enamel. This can give your teeth a yellowish look and make them more sensitive to heat and cold. To prevent this, the vinegar should always be diluted with water or a pinch of baking soda should be added in order to reduce the acidity level. Also using a straw while drinking the ACV solution may help minimize its direct contact with dental enamel.

Where and How to Buy Apple Cider Vinegar

Apple Cider Vinegar can be found in almost any natural health or nutrition store, or from a variety of online retailers such as Amazon.com (see links below). Look for ACV with a pH level of 5 to 7. It can also be found in capsule form which helps eliminate the strong sour taste associated with the liquid form and is a more palatable option for people who don’t like the unique taste of Apple Cider Vinegar.

  1. Felicity

You can order Apple Cider Vinegar from Amazon.

  2. I’ve used ACV all my life. My grandparents told me about it. Now I’m 57 y/o and still use it for many things. For a flakey pie crust, I add a small amount of ACV (about a tsp or 2) and it helps cut the butter.

  3. Jennifer

I’m just one of the unlucky ladies that attract mosquitoes! I am 57 y/o. I use ANY vinegar for immediate relief after a bite! I keep a small cloth soaking in the fridge on garden mornings, and when tucking in the chickens at night. It works!

  4. Kevin LaCombe

I have been using Apple Cider Vinegar for years. It helps me with a variety of things. I’m feeling better overall – must be the PH balancing?
My hair and nails are healthier and
my skin is so much better. Not sure how or why but it does work wonders.

  5. Rosario Labja

My right leg was inflamed for about 2 years, it was just on and off. It was so disrupting for my daily routine. We did scans and got tests done to make sure I take the right medicine to heal this swelling on my right leg. I had taken Alluperinol 100 mg. I personally think that herbal solution is better than being dependent on any medicine. While using Tenoritic for my high blood pressure (BP)150/130, I tried this herbal ACV before each meal, 2tbs diluted in a glass of water, and 1 tablespoon in a glass of water after the meal and before bedtime. Just after 1 week of taking ACV it helped me a lot and made me feel comfortable and now the swelling of my right leg is gone. It has helped regulate my bowel and my blood pressure – my BP is at 120/80 now. Really, it’s amazing! I thank God for this amazing Apple Cider Vinegar which has made my life brand new.

  6. @ Diksha Dua, Apple Cider Vinegar works great for acne treatment. Simply soak a cotton ball in organic ACV and dab it over affected skin and leave it on over night. Also adding a drop of tea tree oil in your daily moisturizer cream keeps the skin disinfected and inhibits the growth of acne. Good luck!

  7. @ Wonde Tilahun, It seems like you are experiencing a sever case of Bromhidrosis. There are many reasons which may cause body odor. Diet, genetics, hygiene and environment are a few important factors that can lead to Bromhidrosis. However, you can’t do anything to change the genetics contribution to it but you can always deal with other factors. Taking shower twice daily, using antiperspirants and antibacterial soaps and lotions, keeping the skin dry, shaving underarms regularly, changing clothes twice daily, avoiding foods like curry spice, onions, garlic, and alcohol, and washing clothes in a good antibacterial and fragrant detergent may help get rid of bad odour. If you can’t find ACV, there are a lot more things other than Apple Cider Vinegar that you can use to reduce BO. You can buy ACV online very easily if you have a credit card. Also applying or bathing in water mixed with white vinegar, sage tea, rosemary tea, baking soda, or tea tree oil really helps with body odor. Drinking tea made with Sage or Rosemary and also applying the teas with a cotton ball to the areas you perspire more a few times daily can help. Make sure that you don’t give up. Use all these remedies regularly and the amazing properties of these herbs will get rid of body odour. You will be amazed to see how the drying effects of baking soda, antiperspirant activity of Sage herb, antiseptic/antibacterial activity and pleasant smell of Rosemary, and PH levels balancing properties of ACV will keep you fresh and body odour free. I hope it helps!

  8. Ricjey

Cold feet means poor circulation, I think. Can ACV be helpful?

  9. Wonde Tilahun

Hi, I am dealing with an extreme case of body odour problem. I can’t be around people. If somebody comes near me, I run away. I’m a student and have hard time sitting in the classroom with other students. I feel very embarrassed and cannot focus on lectures and can’t learn anything in the class. Please help me! I live in a suburb far away from the city and don’t know where to get Apple Cider Vinegar from. So please let me know how can I get apple cider vinegar? Please save my life! Your help will not only cure my health condition but will also cure my soul! Thank you in advance! May God help you too.

  10. I have been using Apple Cider Vinegar for 8 years. It is for everything you say and more. I use it twice each day and sometimes even more. Thank you!

I’ve had a problem with an external hemorrhoid. It had been burning for months. I applied Apple Cider Vinegar on it with a bathroom tissue 2 to 3 times a day and within 2 days of applying ACV, the pain is gone and the hemorrhoid has shrunk big time.

  12. Diksha dua

Can I use filtered ACV to cure acne?

  13. The Raw vinegar is great but if your ph is on the acidic side the ARV can burn your intestines.
Watch out for too much acid.

  14. moriah

I needed to loose weight fast! AND I MEAN FAST LIKE IN 10 DAYS! I drank 1 tablespoon of Apple Cider Vinegar in my tea/water before each meal three times a day and didn’t eat past 7:30pm. Life saver!!!! I was feeling energized, my skin cleared up, I wasn’t bloated anymore, and my stomach, arms and face completely slimmed down around the 5th day. It is a miracle drink.

  15. satwant bali

Will ACV help with blood pressure? I am taking medicines like Minipress (prazosin hydrochloride) Olmat-H, Natrilix, Dilzen-G for high BP. Please guide me. I will be very thankful!

  16. satwantbali

On one hand there are so many benefits of Apple Cider Vinegar and on the other hand some say it can increase blood pressure? So what one can make out of it, take it for BP or not?

  17. ACV helps with a variety of bacteria so you can not get hurt or feel any worse for trying a bottle of organic ACV. I think it will settle the H pylori irritation in your gut.

  18. To Shelby,
It sounds very likely that you have TOS (thoracic outlet syndrome) and will need to monitor it. I am a HUGE fan of Bragg’s ACV and devoted drinker but I had the same problem that you described. I kept trying to cure it with ACV until now. I faint and black out on nearly a daily basis. It is a vascular problem if you can push on a vein/artery and it stops. Hopefully you had really outrageously high cholesterol and plaque in your arteries that cleared up with ACV and healthy diet. IF not, then you can be suffering from TOS too. TOS is caused by a rare birth defect of an extra rib or repetitions of movement and scar tissue builds up and cuts the supply off to your brain. It comes and goes and you have to move your head or arm just right to have trouble. I have spent 4 years of specialists and every test to diagnose my TOS. MDs said hypertension, high cholesterol, RA etc. It turned out to be a little piece of cartilage in my shoulder cutting off my ENTIRE jugular supply on my left side. While ACV is good stuff, it can not melt cartilage. I drink it daily to help prep my immune system for surgery that should have been done over 10 years ago. I have a very severe case of TOS now.

  19. cecile

What did you do? Did you massage or drink it?

  20. melissa

Can anyone tell me if consuming the vinegar will have any negative effects if taken along with a daily regimen of a multi-vitamin, krill oil, probiotic and dandelion root tea?

  21. Shelby

In June of 2013 I began hearing all kinds of noises in my left ear. I went to several doctors and got no relief. Had CT scan and MRI done which showed nothing. One diagnosis was that it was a vascular problem. I could press on an artery in my neck underneath my ear and noise would go away, therefore, it was obviously vascular. Maybe a vein or artery had a kink in it and blood could not flow as it should. I got acupuncture treatment done and started drinking ACV daily. I strongly believe the ACV cured my problem. In Nov. of 2014, the noises went away!!! A wonderful day for me!!

  22. Gary Feltis

A friend suggested two teaspoons of ACV with half teaspoon baking soda mixed in a ten ounce glass of water, for the gout in both of my big toes. I take it in the morning and again at night and the pain in my toes diminished within several days and is now almost gone, after one week.

  23. Cassy, if you have any herbal food store in your area, they might have it. Try looking for Braggs brand or any other brand which makes organic ACV with mother. Do not buy synthetic vinegar. Synthetic ones don’t have the same health benefits. Or you can easily buy it online.

  24. cassy

Where can I buy ACV? I’m here in Berlin, Germany. Thanks for your help.

  25. cherryann

I have varicose veins on my leg. I’m using acv and have lots of improvement.

  26. I just started it a month ago for kidney stone. This is an amazing curative home remedy that works great. The back pain also finally stopped so it not only has one purpose… it does wonders! I highly recommend it! Make sure to buy the organic with mother.

  27. HusseinKEYA

Can ACV be used by children?

  28. I bought organic mother acv at Marquette basket. I love it!

  29. Drew chellani

Yes it will help. Drink 32 ounce glass of water mixed with 2 tablespoons of acv from the grocery store. Not raw just 5 percent acidity will solve all your problems. Also will lose 8 to 10 pounds in the first month. Good luck.

  30. Karen

You can also find the Bragg Apple Cider Vinegar at Wal-Mart and Brookshire grocery stores.

  31. You can buy it in tescos, made by kelkin.

  32. @Sid, You can buy it online from Amazon or other sites easily. But usually, herbal stores carry it. When buying Apple Cider Vinegar, just make sure that it is organic with mother and with PH level 5-7. Good luck!

  33. DIANE

I found a remedy to use on the Internet. It was a new skin liquid bandage. I had skin tags on my face and in just one weekend they dried up and fell off after applying the bandage.

  34. From where do I buy apple cider vinegar in Muzaffarpur, Bihar, India?

  35. Carol

I have those awful little wart looking things called “skin tags”. I read that if you put ACV on them daily they would fall off in a few days, so I figured what the heck. I took a bandage and soaked the center pad with ACV and slapped the bandage on. By the second day when I took the bandage off, the skin tag had fallen off. I really did not believe it would work but it sure did!!!

  36. lola marquez

Okay you say ACV helps with cholesterol. How about H pylori, which I have. Will it help get rid of it?

  37. April Shelly

I was searching the web for “health benefits of ACV” when I came across this website. After reading some of the posts here, I think it would be appropriate to share my unexpected but welcome experiences with ACV.

I decided to try the “fad” that was going around of mixing vinegar with Listerine to soften the calluses on my feet so they would be easier to exfoliate. I have horrible calluses passed on through heredity. For some reason I decided to try ACV instead of regular vinegar. It worked better than I could have ever imagined. I also had a stubborn wart on the side of my foot that just disappeared on its own after the second time I tried the treatment.

For some reason I have been getting edema in my ankles for about month. No medical reason has been found. I did another treatment on my feet this past week and the next morning the edema was gone and hasn’t come back.

I am going to try my next callus treatment without the Listerine and see if maybe the ACV is the key, which by the way, is a regular store bought brand with 5% acidity.

  38. heygirl

I take it with grapefruit 3 times a day before a meal. 2 spoons for weight loss.

Diabetes and high blood pressure is gone away forever!

  39. Dad took apple cider vinegar for 40 years and died at 85 with enlarged knuckles but no arthritis pain at all. I have been taking it for 3 months and it has brought my cholesterol down from 8 to 6.5 and my night cramps have disappeared. I have Optifast Desert shakes with a teaspoon of psyllium in it and I soak frozen mangos in ACV then mix it into my shake. I also will have it in apple juice or in orange juice. I also will add chlorophyll in my shakes at other times to give a spearmint chocolate flavour. Yum. To good health… Pam.

  40. Wow, I’m amazed to hear your miraculous story about ACV use, Sheree. How much apple cider vinegar were you taking daily?

  41. Sheree

Talking to your doctor is like whistling in the wind. They are amused at something like ACV instead of drastic medications. Recently while in the hospital for crushing chest pain, they ran a BNP blood test which indicates heart failure. Normal would be anything up to 125. Mine was 928.1. Of course they wanted me on cholesterol meds with all their side effects. I took ACV to clear out my arteries that showed moderately severe calcifications throughout the abdominal aorta from a CT scan. After 3 weeks, I had another BNP test. It showed 54.1! When I told them I had been taking ACV, they all laughed and said it couldn’t have been that — no way. I haven’t had any chest pain since.

  42. Sophie

@Eric- Supposedly taking 2 tsp of Organic Apple Cider Vinegar diluted in juice or water twice daily helps with gout by breaking up uric acid’s crystals. About weight loss – I have used it along with half hour of elliptical exercise and lost about 15 pounds. For age spots, I’m currently using the remedy (mix of onion juice and ACV) mentioned above on this page. Sometimes it feels they are fading but I think it’s going to take a month or so to see the difference. Age spots are stubborn and don’t go away very easily. About taking ACV, yes it tastes horrible if it is not diluted well. I took 2 tsp of ACV mixed in 2-3 glasses of water daily and I could drink it. Also add a pinch of salt so its long term use doesn’t damage the enamel of the teeth. You can also add a little bit of honey or juice to change the taste. It tastes pretty okay with salt or honey. And taking vinegar seems to work faster than the ACV capsules. But it sure is easier to pop a couple of them daily. I hope it helps!

  43. Greetings all. I have a few questions regarding ACV. First, can this help with gout? If so, how much should I consume daily? Weight loss? Also, I have recently noticed age spots on my facial area. Has anyone out there tried this topical treatment? Lastly, is taking the capsule the same as drinking it? I tried 2 teaspoons with a glass of water this morning and almost gagged. Any info helps.
    Thanks,
    Eric

  44. When in doubt, talk to your doctor or pharmacist.

  45. @marie touko, ACV is simply an organic vinegar. You should be okay taking 1-2 tsp daily mixed in 2-3 glasses of water. My sister is on hypo thyroid medication and she’s taking ACV for her weight issues too. I hope it helps!

  46. marie touko

One friend advised me to use Apple Cider Vinegar for weight loss but I have diabetes and hypo thyroid. My medication make me gain weight so I don’t know if I can try it or not. Please advise.

  47. b.k.miller

I had rare skin lesions all over the top of my foot, but the doctor did not know what it was. I tried some meds but it was not until I put a cloth soaked in apple cider vinegar and applied 3 times a day before it got cured, and it never came back!

  48. Melissa

Are there any scientific studies using apple cider vinegar to lower cholesterol?

  49. Benjamin G.Dampal, taking about 2 spoons of Apple Cider Vinegar is okay. But I would suggest diluting it a bit more. I think 1 spoon in one glass of water would be better so that acidity in the vinegar doesn’t damage the teeth enamel.

  50. Benjamin G.Dampal

I am taking 2 tablespoons of ACV mixed with a cup of water before going to bed. Is this ok? Thanks.
