What is Black Seed Oil?

Black seed oil is an oil derived by pressing the seeds of the Nigella Sativa plant. The seeds are also commonly referred to as black cumin. The nutrient-rich oil of black seed has been used for hundreds of years in the Middle East and South Asia as a natural remedy for a variety of ailments.

What are the Benefits of Black Seed Oil?

Studies have shown that black seed oil is an effective anti-oxidant, anti-bacterial, and anti-inflammatory remedy. As a result, it is often used to fight infections and strengthen the immune system, which is suitable for treating the following conditions:

  • headaches
  • toothaches
  • nasal congestion
  • colds and flus
  • infections
  • digestive and gastrointestinal problems
  • hair and skin problems
  • allergies
  • inflammation
  • diabetes

Black seed oil has also been found to be effective at promoting menstruation, increasing milk production and facilitating erection in men. According to a few studies it may also help in the treatment of different types of cancers and HIV. However, more studies are required to determine its efficacy and dosage. For most ailments, the recommended daily dosage is 1/4 teaspoon of black seed oil per day. The oil can be mixed in warm or cold drinks, or it can be added on top of many foods right before consuming. It can also be used topically for backaches and arthritis and as a chest rub for respiratory problems.

Uses of Black Seed Oil

Allergies

Black Seed Oil acts as an antihistamine which helps to reduce the common symptoms of allergies (watery eyes, sneezing). Simply take a 1/4 teaspoon of oil when allergy symptoms begin to appear.

Flu and Fever

Black Seed Oil has been found to help reduce fever, by inducing perspiration which helps the body cool and stimulate the release of toxins. Take 1/4 teaspoon of Black Seed Oil once a day when flu/fever systems occur. Also be sure to drink plenty of fluids throughout the day.

Boils and Carbuncles

Studies have shown that the anti-fungal properties of Black Seed Oil and its active component Thymoquinone help strengthen the immune system and cure many common skin infections including boils and carbuncles. Simply take a quarter teaspoon of Black Seed Oil twice daily (you can mix it into a hot or cold beverage).

Cough and Asthma Relief

The anti-inflammatory and anti-bacterial properties of Black Seed Oil help treat the symptoms of acute asthma and coughs by relaxing bronchial muscles. For asthma, mix a teaspoon of Black Seed Oil in boiling water and inhale the vapor twice a day. For dry coughs, mix a quarter teaspoon of Black Seed Oil into a cup of ginger tea and drink this twice a day. For other types of coughs, massage a small amount of the oil over the center of your chest.

Simply massage Black Seed Oil onto the affected area once in the morning and once before going to bed. You can alternatively add half a teaspoon of Black Seed Oil in a cup of chamomile tea and drink it at night.

Nausea and Upset Stomach

Studies have shown that Black Seed Oil acts as a wonderful remedy for stomach ailments by stimulating digestion and inducing the expulsion of gas. For nausea and upset stomachs, mix half a teaspoon of fresh ginger juice with a quarter teaspoon of Black Seed Oil and drink this twice a day.

Toothaches

Black seed oil’s anti-bacterial and anti-inflammatory properties are great for treating toothaches. Simply mix a pinch of clove powder in half a teaspoon of black seed oil and dip a tiny cotton ball in it and press it on the aching tooth or place it by the infected gum.

What are the Side Effects of Black Seed Oil?

There are no known adverse side effects of Black Seed Oil if it is taken moderately. It should not be consumed for longer period of time. Drinking plenty of water is recommended while taking Black Seed oil. However, it is not recommended for use during pregnancy.

  1. @ Turkur Mohammed, the scientific study done on a patient with HIV was a dose of 10 ml twice a day for 6 months (in conjuction with his other medications.) The conclusion was that it helped the patient control it, not cure it. Google “Nigella sativa concoction induced sustained seroreversion in HIV patient” for more in depth info.

  2. @ leanne, You can google “Organic Virgin Black Cumin Seed Oil” and will get a whole list of people who are selling and distributing. Some more expensive than others. The key here is that you make sure your product says “Organic and Virgin” The best oil is cold pressed so you might want to call the seller first to find out if their product is made that way. You must also be sure to find out the date (month and year) it was pressed into oil and how much of a shelf life it has left. Also ask what kind of container is it shipped in. You must make sure it does not get send with exposure to the sun

  3. @ Ayaz, the recommended therapeutic intake of BSO for all ailments known to Man is three (3) half teaspoons daily. Results will not be seen for several months and there will be an ache and pain period as the body begins to repair itself, depending on the gravity of the situation. But as I have mentioned in the past, one day you will wake up and all the pains and ills will just have vanished into thin air. But you must be patient and consistent, this can not be stressed enough.

  4. @ James. If your baby is suffering from colic, I would give it a quarter teaspoon using an eyedropper just before the last bottle of the night, every other day for a couple of months. Don’t be surprised if the baby doesn’t drink much formula and falls into a deep sleep for the night. As a general rule babies should only take it if they are suffering. Their bodies do not need as much help in repairing itself as adults do because their bodies are naturally growing and producing everything Nature intended for them. Too much black seed oil can make them lose their appetite for food.

  12. Black Seed Oil can be used to treat Cancer, AIDS, Hepatitis, Diabetes and a host of other Diseases and ailments. There are close to 600 scientific studies that have been conducted throughout the world since 1964 that show how Black Seed Oil can cure almost anything and there is still a lot more room available for more studies to be done. It is unfortunate that in the USA the large pharmaceutical corporations do not want this known as it could essentially put them out of business. BSO can heal those who suffer nervous problems, depression, brings down cholesterol, high blood pressure, hyper and hypotension as well. It has antibacterial, anti inflammatory, antifungal, anti spasmotic, antiviral, anti ulcer properties. It is an analgesic (pain killer) and used to heal asthma. The list goes on and on. However, using it topically on your skin may cause certain problems. It is actually best to CONSUME the oil (drink it) because that way it gets into your body on the cellular level and is not wasted. It will reduce tumors and increase bone marrow growth but the fact that it can cure and prevent cancer? You should all be rushing out to buy it and begin your regimen of this miracle oil. But remember that you need to know your facts before you purchase it. Otherwise some snake oil gurus will sell you something that is mixed with other oils for a cheaper price and that just won’t do. And believe me they are out there. Be safe, be well, be informed!

  13. @olufunmilola. There was only one scientific study done on the results of BSO and infertility but it was done in Iran and only on men suffering low sperm count and low motility. The result was after taking 5ml of Black Seed Oil a day for two months it increased the sperm count and motility without any side effects or other abnormailities. You must realize that there are different causes for infertility and that is where difficulties arise. Black Seed Oil (BSO) can certainly help fertility in men but there are yet to be studies conducted for women. But who knows? Depending on the particular circumstances of the infertility it would appear that BSO certainly promotes a healthy situation to engender children. I would recommend the addition of red panax Ginseng extract in conjunction with BSO if you are looking to give it a try.

Can black seed oil treat infertility?

  15. @Arhin, you would probably be better off using Ginseng to open up blood capillaries for blood clots. While Black Seed Oil is Nature’s most perfect food, there are other herbs more specialized for problems such as yours. In my humble opinion Ginseng is the way to go for your problem and it can be used in conjunction with Black Seed Oil.

  16. Organic virgin black cumin seed oil is a miracle nutrient for the human body. Apart from some of the old wives tales some people try to put on others you should know several things about it. 1) It does not produce miracles over night. It takes several months of consistent use before you start to see real results. 2) Recommended dosage should be 1/2 teaspoon to start, right before going to bed each night for a week. Reason? BSO has a sedative effect and will make you very sleepy within an hour when you first start using it. After a week, you body will acclimate and then you can start a regimen of 1/2 teaspoon morning, noon and night for therapeutic results. Just remember that during that time, your body will have certain aches and pains as the black seed oil begins its attack on your weak spots to fortify it. This is normal and will pass in a couple of weeks. Then one day, you will wake up and all of your weaknesses will have just vanished! 3) BSO is highly sensitive to light and must never be stored in the refrigerator. Light, oxygen and cold will cause it to become rancid and useless for the human organism, A tightly closed jar covered with paper is the most practical way to store it in your kitchen cabinet or pantry and it can hold good for a couple of years. Avoid any pill form because that process destroys delicate nutrients of the oil. No matter what anyone tells you. The best form of BSO is the oil itself pure and simple. There are two forms of the oil. The best for consumption is of course the organic but it is very pricey. The non organic produces results just as well and for those who want to try applications on the body (which I would not recommend) it won’t price you out of the market. Like anything else use good common sense. While BSO is a miracle food it can also produce some undesirable side effects if too much is taken or used in the wrong way or not stored correctly. Be safe, Be well, Be informed!

I have been diagnosed with a groin hernia. I don’t want to undergo surgery. Will black seed oil be helpful? Can it reduce frequent urination?

  41. WARNING TO WOMEN!!! I LOVE black seed oil for many things as it has really helped out my family members BUT DO NOT USE IT WHILE PREGNANT OR NURSING. I don’t have experience using it while nursing but I do while breastfeeding and it brought back my period in a very painful way. My vagina ached and felt like I was in a constant painful orgasm all the time. HORRIBLE. Wait until your period naturally returns before starting use. I think it is because the oil balances out the hormones in the body, and while breastfeeding a certain hormone is higher in order to produce milk, and it doesn’t normalize until after the breastfeeding slows down. The black seed oil tries to do you a favor but, not quite what you want unless you are trying to conceive right away again and you actually want your period to return. Otherwise its an awesome product, especially for shrinking tumors and ridding inflammation, and skin problems.
